Pilate . . . called Jesus, and said . . . Art thou the King of the Jews?--In Luk 23:2 they charge our Lord before Pilate with "perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to CÃ&brvbrsar, saying that He Himself is Christ a king." Perhaps this was what occasioned Pilate's question.
Відкрити джерело ↗Hitherto this evangelist has recorded little of the history of Christ, only so far as was requisite to introduce his discourses; but now that the time drew nigh that Jesus must die he is very particular in relating the circumstances of his sufferings, and some which the others had omitted, especially his sayings. So far were his followers from being ashamed of his cross, or endeavouring to conceal it, that this was what, both by word and writing, they were most industrious to proclaim, and gloried in it. This chapter relates, I. How Christ was arrested in the garden and surrendered himself a prisoner (Joh 18:1-12). II. How he was abused in the high priest's court, and how Peter, in the meantime, denied him (Joh 18:13-27). III. How he was prosecuted before Pilate, and examined by him, and put in election with Barabbas for the favour of the people, and lost it (Joh 18:28-40).
Відкрити джерело ↗18:33 Pilate was personally responsible for capital crimes in which the interests and security of the Roman Empire were at stake, so he began his formal legal inquiry. • Are you the king of the Jews? To get the governor’s attention, Caiaphas had charged that Jesus had urged people not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and had claimed to be a king (Luke 23:2). To Pilate, Jesus might have been just another Jewish terrorist–revolutionary (see Luke 23:18-19; Acts 5:36-37) with a head full of messianic notions and a band of well-armed followers.

Радій ве́льми, о до́чко Сіону, веселись, до́чко Єрусалиму! Ось Цар твій до те́бе гряде́, справедливий і повний спасі́ння, покі́рний, і ї́де на ослі, і на молодім віслюко́ві, сині осли́ці.
і приступали до Нього й казали: „Раді́й, Ца́рю Юдейський!“ І били по щоках Його.
Після цього Пилат намагався пустити Його, та юдеї кричали, говорячи: „Якщо Його пустиш, то не ке́сарів при́ятель ти! Усякий, хто себе за царя видає, противиться ке́сареві“.
„Не бійся, до́чко Сіонська! Ото Цар твій іде, сидячи́ на ослі молодому!“
Відповів Йому Натанаїл: „Учителю, Ти — Син Божий, Ти — Цар Ізраїлі́в!“
Ось дні наступають, — говорить Господь, — і поставлю Давидові праведну Па́рость, і Цар зацарю́є, і буде Він мудрий, — і правосу́ддя та правду в Краю́ запрова́дить.
