I Samuel 31:4

Look at the scene: Saul is wounded, his sons are dead beside him, his army is broken, and enemy archers are closing in on the mountain. He turns to the one man still standing next to him — his armor-bearer, the servant whose whole job was to carry his shield and protect his back — and gives him one last order: kill me. Not "help me escape." Not "finish the fight." Kill me.

The reason he gives is telling: he's not afraid of dying, he's afraid of what will happen before he dies. "These uncircumcised men will come and run me through and torture me." He's picturing the Philistines finding the king of Israel still breathing, and making sport of him — the word behind "torture" or "abuse" carries the sense of being toyed with, humiliated, used as a plaything Strong's. Better a quick death by his own sword than a slow one at the hands of men he's spent his life despising.

And here's the detail easy to rush past: the armor-bearer refuses. Not out of cowardice — the text says he was "terrified," using intense, almost violent language for fear Strong's — but because raising a hand against "the LORD's anointed" was, to an Israelite conscience, close to unthinkable. That refusal will echo loudly one chapter later, when an Amalekite claims to have done what this armor-bearer wouldn't, and David executes him for it ( 2 Samuel 1:14-16).

So Saul dies by his own hand, on his own sword. This is the last page of a story that began with such promise — a tall, handsome young man anointed by Samuel, filled with the Spirit, given victory after victory. Now he ends it alone on a hillside, having outlived his own usefulness to the God who chose him. Commentators through the centuries have called this simply the last chapter of a man rejected by God long before this battle ever started Matthew Henry. There's no real doctrinal fight over this verse — the disagreement, such as it is, comes later, over whether suicide here counts as sin, and how; we'll get there in a minute.

First Samuel was likely compiled from older court and prophetic records sometime during or after the united monarchy, reaching something like its final form by the time of the Babylonian exile (roughly 6th century BC), though the events themselves happened around 1010 BC. This chapter sits at the very end of Saul's reign and the very end of the book.

The battle is happening on Mount Gilboa, in the Jezreel Valley in northern Israel — open, hilly country good for chariots, which the Philistines had and Israel mostly didn't. The Philistines were a seafaring people who'd settled the coastal plain generations earlier, organized into five city-states, and they'd been Israel's most persistent military threat for a hundred years. They fought with iron weapons and disciplined ranks; Israel, especially under Saul, was still a patchwork of tribal militias.

The phrase "these uncircumcised men" isn't a throwaway insult — circumcision was the sign of the covenant God cut with Abraham, the physical mark that said "this people belongs to Yahweh." Calling the Philistines "uncircumcised" wasn't about hygiene; it was about identity. They stood outside the covenant, outside the story God was building with Israel. Saul uses the same word young David used about Goliath ( 1 Samuel 17:36) — but where David said it with confidence that God would deal with the outsider, Saul says it in despair, as a man who no longer expects God to show up for him at all Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

An armor-bearer wasn't a servant boy — he was a trusted soldier, often a right hand in battle, close enough to a king that David himself had once served in that very role for Saul ( 1 Samuel 16:21) Tyndale. That makes this moment sting more: the man Saul is asking to kill him is exactly the kind of loyal soldier a good king deserves and a broken one no longer has the right to command.

The word for "draw" is שָׁלַף (shalaph, H8025), a simple, violent verb — to pull something out, up, or off. Nothing subtle about it; it's the sound of steel leaving a scabbard in a hurry.

The verb translated "run through" / "thrust through" is דָּקַר (daqar, H1856) — to stab, and by extension, to pierce or run through completely Strong's. It's used twice in this single verse: once for what Saul fears the Philistines will do, once for what he's asking his armor-bearer to do to him first. Same verb, same violence — he's just choosing who gets to do it and when.

The word rendered "torture" or "abuse" is עָלַל (alal, H5953), whose range is startling: it means to effect something thoroughly, but in a bad sense it means to maltreat, toy with, be "saucy" toward, impose pain on someone helpless Strong's. Think of it as the word for what a cruel child does to an insect he's caught — not just killing it, but playing with it first. That's the specific horror Saul is trying to avoid.

The armor-bearer's fear is described with יָרֵא (yare, H3372) intensified by מְאֹד (meod, H3966) — "vehemently, wholly, exceedingly" Strong's. This isn't ordinary battlefield nerves; it's the word used elsewhere for reverence, even for how you're supposed to fear God. He is more afraid of the act Saul is asking than he is of the enemy bearing down on them both.

And notice עָרֵל (arel, H6189), "uncircumcised" — used only as a technical, covenantal term in Hebrew, never casually Strong's. Saul reaches for the one word in his vocabulary that draws the sharpest possible line between God's people and everyone else — even as he himself is about to die outside of God's favor.

Saul was Israel's first king — tall, impressive, chosen by popular demand rather than God's first choice ( 1 Samuel 8:7). He had the Spirit, he had victories, and he threw it all away through pride, disobedience, and finally consulting a medium the night before this very battle ( 1 Samuel 28). His story ends exactly where you'd expect a king to end who tried to rule Israel on his own terms: alone, cut off, taking his own life rather than facing what his rebellion earned him.

Jesus is the King who inverts every piece of this. Where Saul begs a servant to kill him quickly so he won't have to endure mockery and torture at enemy hands, Jesus walked deliberately into mockery and torture at enemy hands — the soldiers who beat him, spit on him, and made sport of him before he died ( Mark 15:16-20) were doing to him exactly what Saul dreaded from the Philistines. Saul asked to be spared humiliation. Jesus refused to be spared it, "for the joy set before him" ( Hebrews 12:2).

And where Saul's armor-bearer wouldn't lift a hand against "the LORD's anointed" because the king's life was too sacred to touch, it's precisely the LORD's true Anointed — that's what "Messiah" and "Christ" both mean — whom God himself did not spare, but "gave him up for us all" ( Romans 8:32). Saul dies because God has withdrawn from him; Jesus dies while fully in the Father's will, absorbing an abandonment ("My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" — Matthew 27:46) that Saul only tastes a shadow of.

This isn't a straight prophecy fulfilled — it's a contrast that throws Jesus into relief. Saul is a king who ends the story by his own hand because he had nothing left. Jesus is the King who lays his life down by his own will ( John 10:18) because he has everything to give.

Sit with the ugliness of this for a second before you rush to a lesson. A man who once had God's Spirit, God's calling, God's favor, dies alone on a hill, begging someone else to end his life because he can't bear to face what's coming. That's not a morality tale wrapped up neatly — that's a wreck. And the Bible doesn't flinch from showing it to you.

Here's what should unsettle you: Saul's story didn't start here. It started with rejected warnings, small compromises, jealousy he refused to kill, disobedience he explained away instead of confessing. By the time he's on Mount Gilboa, he isn't making one bad decision — he's living out the sum of a hundred small refusals to actually turn back to God. This is what a life looks like when repentance keeps getting postponed. Not a dramatic collapse out of nowhere, but the last domino in a very long line.

So ask yourself honestly: where are you postponing? What has God already told you — through Scripture, through people who love you, through your own conscience — that you keep filing away instead of dealing with? Saul heard Samuel's warnings for years and kept managing his image instead of his soul. The cost this verse asks of you isn't dramatic. It's smaller and harder: stop managing, start confessing — today, about the specific thing you already know.

And notice the mercy hiding in the wreckage too. Even here, God doesn't abandon the story. A few verses later, the men of Jabesh-gilead risk their lives to give Saul's body a decent burial, remembering an old kindness he'd done them years before ( 1 Samuel 31:11-13). Grace still moves even at the bottom. It's not too late for you to turn — that's the whole point of writing this chapter down.

• Lord, show me the small compromises I keep excusing before they turn into a wreck like Saul's — I don't want to wait until it's this bad to listen to you.
• I confess how afraid I am of humiliation and shame, and I ask you to help me trust you with my reputation instead of trying to control every outcome myself.
• Thank you that Jesus walked into the mockery and torture Saul was so desperate to avoid — help me actually believe that his suffering means something for mine.
• Give me the courage of the armor-bearer, to refuse what's wrong even when refusing terrifies me and everyone around me is choosing differently.
• Where I've drifted far enough from you that I feel abandoned like Saul did, draw me back — I don't want to die on that hill.
