I Samuel 30:6

Look at where David is standing when this verse happens: he's just come home from a three-day march, and Ziklag — the town where his six hundred men had parked their wives, kids, and everything they owned — is a smoking ruin. The Amalekites raided it, burned it, and marched off every woman and child alive. David's own two wives are gone. And now the men who've followed him through years of running from Saul are picking up stones. Not metaphorically — they are talking about actually killing him, right there.

The verse gives you the reason in plain terms: "the soul of every man grieved for his sons and daughters" Strong's. This isn't political mutiny. It's raw grief curdling into rage, and David is the nearest target because he led them away from home in the first place. Notice the Hebrew word for David's own state — yatsar (H3334), "to be pressed, narrow, in distress" Strong's — the same picture as being squeezed in a tight place with no way out. He's got nowhere to run. His men want him dead, his family is gone, and there's no army, no prophet, no friend standing next to him.

And then the turn: "But David found strength in the LORD his God." That "but" carries the whole verse. Nothing about David's circumstances changed in that clause — the men are still angry, the wives are still captive, the road ahead is still unknown. What changed is where David put his weight.

This sits at a hinge point in David's story — the last dark valley before he becomes king. Within a chapter he's inquiring of God, chasing down the raiders, and recovering everyone and everything Matthew Henry. Older Jewish commentary connects the Aramaic phrasing here to "strengthening himself in the Word of the Lord" — language later readers naturally heard echoed in Christ, "the Word" John Gill. There's no real doctrinal argument among Christian traditions on this verse — everyone reads it as a picture of raw faith under pressure — though how much "finding strength" was an active discipline of David's will versus a gift given to him is worth sitting with.

This scene comes from around 1010 BC, near the very end of Saul's reign. David has been on the run for years, hiding from a king who wants him dead out of jealousy. In a desperate move, David had taken his six hundred men and their families and gone to live under the protection of Achish, the Philistine king of Gath — Israel's enemy — because it seemed safer than staying in Saul's territory ( 1 Samuel 27). Achish gave David the border town of Ziklag to live in.

Then the Philistines mustered for a massive battle against Saul and Israel. David and his men were expected to march with the Philistine army — which would have meant fighting against his own people. The other Philistine commanders didn't trust him and sent him home, which, as it turns out, saved his life and his conscience. While David and his men were away those few days, roving raiders from Amalek — the same tribal enemy Israel had fought since the Exodus — swept into the undefended town of Ziklag, burned it to the ground, and carried off every woman and child as plunder, without killing anyone Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

David's men come home to ashes and silence where their families used to be. There's no king to appeal to, no army to call, no city to retreat to — Ziklag was theirs. The rage in verse 6 makes total sense once you picture it: six hundred armed, grieving men, freshly humiliated by being sent home from battle, now facing the total loss of everyone they loved, with their commander standing right there as the obvious person to blame for leading them into this exposed position in the first place Adam Clarke. This is a leader at the absolute bottom, right before God begins to lift him toward the throne.

The verse leans on a handful of loaded words. First, וַיֵּצֶר from yatsar (H3334) — "to press, be narrow, be in distress" Strong's. It's the same root idea behind the Hebrew word for a tight, narrow strait — imagine being squeezed between two rock walls with no way through. That's David's inner state, not just circumstantial trouble but a claustrophobic pressure on his soul.

Then סָקַל, saqal (H5619) — "to stone," the act of throwing rocks to kill someone as a mob Strong's. This is the same word used when Israel later threatens Moses in Exodus 17:4. It tells you this wasn't grumbling — this was a real, lethal threat from the very men David commanded.

נֶפֶשׁ, nephesh (H5315) — usually translated "soul," but it really means the whole living, breathing self, the seat of appetite and grief together Strong's. "The soul of every man grieved" means this wasn't polite sadness; it was gut-level, whole-person anguish, the kind that makes you capable of things you wouldn't normally do — like stoning your own leader.

Finally, the verb that turns the whole verse: חָזַק, chazaq (H2388) — "to fasten upon, seize, be strong, strengthen" Strong's. It's an active, muscular word — the same root used for "be strong and courageous." David isn't described as feeling calm; he seizes strength, deliberately grips onto something outside himself. And that something is יְהוָה אֱלֹהָיו — Yahweh elohav, "the LORD his God" (H3068, H430) Strong's — the covenant name paired with the personal possessive. Not just "God" in general, but his God, the one bound to him by promise.

There's a striking parallel buried right in this scene: Saul, back in 1 Samuel 28:15, describes himself as being "in great distress" using nearly identical language, and his response is to sneak off to a medium to conjure the dead — grasping for power in the dark. David, in the same kind of pressure, "found strength in the LORD his God." Same word for distress, opposite direction entirely Tyndale. That contrast is part of why David becomes king and Saul doesn't — not because David never breaks, but because of where he turns when he does.

This is where the whole story is pointing forward. Centuries later, another son of David stands in a garden crushed under a weight that makes sweat fall like blood ( Luke 22:44), abandoned by the very friends who'd followed him for years, facing not a mob with stones but a cross. And where does he go? Not to power, not to escape — to his Father, in prayer, submitting even while asking for another way. Jesus is David's greater son who walks the same road of being surrounded, betrayed, and utterly alone, and who finds his strength not by seizing control of his circumstances but by trusting the Father who sent him there.

Paul later takes exactly this posture and turns it into doctrine: "If God is for us, who can be against us?" ( Romans 8:31). That confidence doesn't come from nowhere — it's the same move David makes in the rubble of Ziklag, now grounded permanently in the resurrection. The writer of Hebrews quotes the same defiant hope: "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" ( Hebrews 13:6) — words that only make full sense once you know a man who was actually killed by his own people and rose anyway. David found strength in the Lord and lived to be king. Jesus found strength in the Father and walked into death itself — and came out the other side. That's the difference, and the hope.

You know this feeling, even if your version doesn't involve stones. It's the moment when the people you counted on turn on you, when the thing you worked for is ashes, and there is genuinely no one left in the room who's on your side. Maybe it's a marriage that blew up because of a decision you made in good faith. Maybe it's a job, a church, a friendship where you're suddenly the villain in everyone else's story and you don't even fully know why. David didn't have clean hands either — some of this mess traces back to his own choice to move his people to enemy territory. That's worth sitting with: God doesn't wait for you to be innocent before he becomes your strength.

Here's the cost this verse actually asks of you: David didn't fix his circumstances first and then feel better. He had zero leverage — no army, no ally, an execution literally being discussed — and in that state, before anything changed, he turned toward God. That's the hard part. Every instinct you have will tell you to solve the crisis first and pray later, once things calm down. David does it backwards, and it's the only reason he had the clarity to inquire of God in the very next verse and actually get his family back.

So ask yourself honestly: when you're cornered, where do your hands reach first? For a phone, a drink, a person who'll tell you what you want to hear, a plan you can control? Saul reached for a medium. David reached for the LORD his God — not God in the abstract, but the God he already knew by name, from the sheep pens and the giant and the caves. That relationship didn't start in the crisis. It's why it held. Start building that now, before your Ziklag burns.

• Lord, when everyone around me turns and the ground gives way, teach me to reach for you before I reach for anything else.
• I confess the times I've gone looking for control, comfort, or escape instead of you — forgive me and turn my hands back toward you.
• Thank you that you are not just "God" in general to me, but my God, bound to me by promise, the way you were David's.
• Give me David's kind of strength — not the absence of grief, but the refusal to face it alone.
• When I've contributed to my own disaster, keep me from despair; let me still find you willing to meet me there.

• Think of the last time you were truly cornered — no leverage, no allies. Where did your hands actually reach first?
• David's mess was partly his own doing. Does that make it harder or easier for you to believe God would still meet him there — and meet you in yours?
• What would it look like this week to "find strength in the Lord" in some concrete, specific action, not just a feeling?
• Who in your life is currently in David's position — cornered and blamed — and what would it cost you to stand with them instead of throwing a stone?
• Is your trust in God something built over years of small, ordinary faithfulness, or are you hoping it'll just appear the moment you need it?
