I Samuel 29:6

Look at what's happening on the surface: Achish, the Philistine king, calls David in and gives him a glowing character reference. "As surely as the LORD lives" — he swears by Yahweh, Israel's covenant name for God, not by his own Philistine gods, probably because he knows that's the oath David will trust John Gill. He says David has been "upright," that his conduct — literally his "going out and coming in," a Hebrew way of saying "everything you do, day in and day out" — has been good in his eyes, and that he's found no fault in him. Then comes the turn: "But you have no favor in the sight of the leaders." The other four Philistine lords don't trust David, and they overrule their own king.

Here's what's easy to miss: Achish's praise is sincere, but it's built on a lie. David had been living a double life in Philistine territory — raiding Israel's enemies while telling Achish he was raiding Judah itself ( 1 Samuel 27:8-12) Tyndale. So when Achish says "I have found no fault in you," he's telling the truth as far as he knows it — but he doesn't know the whole truth Adam Clarke. David isn't as clean as this testimonial makes him sound; he's just better at hiding it than the suspicious Philistine commanders, who smell something wrong even if they can't name it.

This sits at a hinge point in the story: Saul and Israel are about to face the Philistines at Mount Gilboa, where Saul and Jonathan will die ( 1 Samuel 31). If David had marched into that battle with the Philistines, he'd have been forced to either fight against his own people or expose his whole ruse. Instead, the distrust of five pagan lords does what David's own cleverness couldn't — it gets him off the battlefield entirely. Christians have long debated how much credit David deserves here: was this providence rescuing a compromised man, or David's own scheming finally catching up with consequences God simply redirected for good? Either way works with the text — but it's worth sitting with the discomfort rather than rushing past it.

This scene comes from 1 Samuel, part of the larger story of Israel's transition from judges to kings, likely written down (drawing on earlier sources and court records) sometime in the early monarchy period, describing events around 1010 BC. By this point, David has been anointed as Israel's future king but is still a fugitive, hunted relentlessly by King Saul, who sees him as a rival. Desperate, David had done something shocking: he defected to the Philistines — Israel's chief enemy — and took refuge under Achish, king of the Philistine city of Gath ( 1 Samuel 27:1-4). The Philistines weren't one nation but a confederation of five city-states (Gath, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, Gaza), each ruled by its own "lord" or "seren." Achish was one of five equals, not a supreme monarch — which matters here, because it means he doesn't have the final word Matthew Henry.

Now the Philistines are massing their armies at Aphek to march north and crush Saul's forces at Mount Gilboa, in the Jezreel Valley — a real, identifiable stretch of land you could still walk today, with Shunem, En-dor, and Gilboa all visible from one another Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. David and his six hundred men have been marching along as Achish's loyal contingent, presumably expected to fight against Israel. But the other Philistine commanders take one look at David — the man famous in Israelite song for killing "his tens of thousands" of Philistines — and refuse to let him march into battle at their backs. Their political instinct, ironically, is sounder than Achish's personal affection. This is a world of shifting alliances, tribal suspicion, and kings who can't fully control their own armies — and David is standing right in the middle of it, trapped by choices he made to survive.

Achish swears "as surely as יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) lives," and pairs it with חַי (chay, H2416), "living, alive." That's striking — a pagan king reaching for Israel's own covenant name for God to make his oath land with David John Gill. He wasn't a worshiper of Yahweh, but he knew whose name would carry weight with the man in front of him.

He calls David יָשָׁר (yashar, H3477) — "straight, upright." The word pictures something plumb, true to line, not crooked. Then twice he uses טוֹב (ṭôwb, H2896), "good" — David's conduct is "good in my eyes" (עַיִן, ʻayin, H5869, "eye" — literally, "good in my eyesight").

The phrase "march in and out" translates two verbs, יָצָא (yatsa, H3318, "go out") and בּוֹא (bo, H935, "come in"). This pairing is a common Hebrew idiom for the whole shape of a person's daily life and conduct — not just military marching, but everything they do, comings and goings alike Strong's. It's the same phrase behind Psalm 121:8's promise that the Lord watches your "going out and your coming in."

Finally, Achish says he has not מָצָא (matsa, H4672, "found, come upon") any רַע (ra, H7451, "bad, evil"). It's investigative language — like a man who's audited the books and found nothing wrong. The irony, of course, is that the audit was incomplete. David's "going out and coming in" hid more than Achish's eyes could see.

There's a real echo here, though it's more a contrast than a straight line. A Gentile ruler stands over the anointed-but-not-yet-crowned king of Israel and declares, "I have found no fault in you." Centuries later, another Gentile ruler will stand over the true and final Anointed One and say almost the same words: "I find no basis for a charge against this man" ( Luke 23:4). But where Achish's verdict was sincere yet mistaken — built on a partial and manipulated picture of David — Pilate's verdict, however reluctantly given, was simply true. Jesus really had done nothing wrong. Peter later puts it plainly: "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth" ( 1 Peter 2:22). David's "uprightness" in this chapter is a costume held together by a lie he's been telling for over a year; Jesus' uprightness is not a costume at all.

There's a second, gentler thread here too. The phrase "going out and coming in" — the whole shape of a person's daily life — shows up again in Psalm 121:8 as God's own promise to watch over his people, and it echoes forward into Jesus' words in John 10:9, where he calls himself the door: "whoever enters through Me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture." David, hunted and hiding, has no one truly watching his comings and goings for good — he's protected here almost by accident, through the suspicion of foreign generals rather than any promise made to him directly. Jesus is the one who actually keeps that promise for his people, guarding their going out and coming in not through the accidents of politics but through his own life laid down for them.

Here's the uncomfortable part of this verse: David gets a five-star character reference from a man he's been deceiving. That should needle you a little. It's possible to look completely upright to the people around you and still be carrying something underneath that you haven't let anyone — least of all God — see clearly. Achish's testimonial felt earned to him. It wasn't the full picture.

You've probably had a season like David's at Ziklag — cornered, scared, doing whatever kept you safe, telling half-truths to people who trusted you, and somehow still coming out the other side with your reputation intact. Maybe you've even thanked God for how things "worked out," without ever going back and being honest about the choices that got you there. This verse won't let you skip that step. God did rescue David here — not because David's hands were clean, but because God is patient and merciful with people mid-mess, using even the suspicion of pagan generals to pull his anointed one out of an impossible corner.

The cost this verse asks of you isn't dramatic — it's quieter and harder. It's letting God audit the parts of your life that look "good in the eyes" of everyone who only sees your going out and your coming in, and inviting him into the parts nobody's found yet. Don't settle for Achish's verdict on your life — sincere, admiring, and incomplete. Ask for God's verdict instead, the one that actually knows everything and still, somehow, chooses to love and rescue you anyway.

• Search me, God, in the places where my reputation looks clean but my heart is hiding something — I don't want to be "upright" only in other people's eyes.
• Thank You that Jesus really was found without fault, not just in appearance but all the way through — let me rest in His righteousness instead of managing my own image.
• Give me the courage to be honest with You before I'm cornered into honesty by circumstances outside my control.
• Teach me to trust You with my "going out and my coming in" — the whole shape of my daily life — even the parts I'd rather keep hidden.

• If God gave a "character reference" of you based only on what people can see, how different would it be from what He actually knows?
• Have you ever thanked God for a rescue without ever admitting the compromise or deception that got you into danger in the first place?
• Who in your life plays the role of the suspicious Philistine lords — people whose distrust of you might actually be more accurate than the praise you're used to hearing?
• What would it cost you to bring the hidden, unaudited part of your life into the light before God today?
