I Samuel 28:6

Look at what's happening here: Saul is standing at the edge of a battlefield, staring down a Philistine army, and he wants to hear from God. So he asks. But nothing comes back. Not a whisper.

The verse names three normal channels God used to speak to his people in this era — dreams, the Urim (a set of sacred lots kept in the high priest's breastplate, used to get yes-or-no answers from God), and prophets. Saul tries all three doors, and all three are locked Adam Clarke. That's not an accident of the story — it's the whole point. This is the same king who, back in 1 Samuel 14:37, asked God a question in battle and got silence, and shrugged it off. Now the silence has become total, permanent, suffocating.

Here's what's easy to miss: this isn't God being distracted or slow. The text wants you to feel that God has decided not to answer — this is judgment, not absence Tyndale. Saul spent years ignoring the prophet Samuel while he was alive; now Samuel is dead, and Saul discovers what it's like to want a word from God and find the line dead. Notice too that Saul doesn't ask "why won't God answer me?" He just moves on to plan B: a medium at Endor. That's the tragedy compressed into one verse — a man who wants God's power without God's rule, so when God goes quiet, he goes looking for someone else who'll talk.

This verse sits right at the hinge of Saul's story: within one chapter he's dead, and the throne is clearing for David. Commentators don't disagree much on the meaning here — this one is fairly unanimous — but there's a live question in how the church has read it: did the "Samuel" who later appears at Endor come from God, or was it a demonic deception? That debate belongs to verses 12–19, but it starts brewing right here, in the silence.

This scene sits inside 1 Samuel, a book most scholars date to being written and compiled sometime between the 10th and 6th centuries BC, telling the story of Israel's transition from tribal judges to kings. By this point in the narrative, Samuel — the last of the judges and the prophet who anointed both Saul and David — has died ( 1 Samuel 25:1). Saul has been king for years, but God rejected him as king back in chapter 15 for disobedience, and the Spirit of the Lord had already departed from him ( 1 Samuel 16:14).

Now the Philistines — Israel's long-standing enemy from the coastal plain to the west, a militarily advanced people with iron weapons and chariots — have massed their armies at Shunem for another invasion. Saul camps at Gilboa, and Scripture says plainly: "when Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly" ( 1 Samuel 28:5). This isn't a king confident in God's protection. This is a man who knows, deep down, that the covering has been pulled away.

So he does what kings and Israelites had always done in a crisis: he inquires of the Lord. This wasn't superstition — it was the ordinary, sanctioned way God's people sought guidance, going back to Moses himself instructing Joshua to consult God through the priest and the Urim ( Numbers 27:21). Dreams, the priestly Urim, and prophets were the three legitimate channels. But by this point David has fled with Abiathar the priest — and the ephod holding the Urim — to hide from Saul (see 1 Samuel 23:6, 9). The prophetic community that Samuel had shepherded at Naioth is no longer speaking into Saul's life. Every normal door to God is, for Saul, already effectively closed before he even knocks. What follows in the rest of the chapter — his desperate, forbidden trip to a medium — only makes sense once you feel how airtight this silence is.

The verb at the center is שָׁאַל (shâʼal, H7592) — "to inquire, ask, request" Strong's. It's worth pausing on, because Saul's own name, שָׁאוּל (Shâʼûwl, H7586), literally comes from this same root — it means "asked for" Strong's. The man whose whole identity is bound up with being "the one Israel asked God for" ( 1 Samuel 8) is now the one asking God for help and getting nothing back. There's a bitter irony baked right into the Hebrew of his name.

God's silence is captured in עָנָה (ʻânâh, H6030) — "to answer, respond, pay attention to" Strong's. The text says God did not do this. In Hebrew storytelling, this verb usually implies covenant relationship — a king or a friend or a father answering when called. Its absence here isn't neutral; it's relational rupture spelled out in grammar.

Then the three failed channels: חֲלוֹם (chălôwm, H2472), "a dream" Strong's — recall Numbers 12:6, where God says dreams are a normal way he speaks to a prophet. אוּרִים (ʼÛwrîym, H224), "Urim," literally connected to the word for "lights" — the sacred lot-objects in the high priest's breastplate used to discern God's yes or no ( Exodus 28:30) Strong's. And נָבִיא (nâbîyʼ, H5030), "prophet" — one who speaks for God, from a root meaning "to announce" Strong's. Three legitimate, God-ordained pipelines, and God — יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068), the covenant name, the name bound to promises kept — simply doesn't send anything through any of them.

This verse is a picture of exactly the kind of silence Jesus came to end. Think about what's happening: a king, cut off from the voice of God, standing in the dark, with no dream, no priestly answer, no prophet to turn to. That's the human condition writ large — not just Saul's problem, but everyone's, ever since Eden. We want to hear from God and the sky feels like brass.

And then look at how the New Testament frames Jesus. When an angel comes to Joseph in a dream ( Matthew 1:20), when God speaks decisively through his Son rather than through fragments and lots and occasional prophets — the writer of Hebrews will later say "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son" ( Hebrews 1:1-2). The three channels that failed Saul — dreams, priestly oracle, prophetic word — all converge and find their fullness in one Person who doesn't need a lot cast or a dream interpreted, because he is the Word of God in flesh ( John 1:1, 14).

There's also a sharper edge here worth sitting with. John 9:31 says God doesn't listen to those in willful sin, but he hears the one who worships him and does his will. Saul's silence wasn't random bad luck — it was the fruit of years of resisting God's word through Samuel while he was alive. Jesus, by contrast, is the one to whom the Father always listens ( John 11:42), and through him, sinners who could never earn a hearing are given access to speak to God as Father ( Ephesians 2:18). The silence Saul faced at Endor is the very silence Jesus tore open on the cross, so that "we may approach God's throne of grace with confidence" ( Hebrews 4:16) instead of being sent to dig up ghosts in the dark.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: what do you do when God goes quiet?

Because he will, sometimes. You'll pray about the diagnosis, the marriage, the decision, the fear — and heaven will feel like it's made of stone. Saul's story tells you that silence is not always neutral. Sometimes it's the natural consequence of a long pattern of not listening when God was speaking. Saul had years of chances — Samuel rebuking him, warning him, pleading with him — and Saul kept doing what he wanted anyway. By the time he's desperate at Gilboa, the door isn't being slammed; it's already shut, and has been for a while.

That should make you examine your own life honestly, not with panic but with clear eyes: is there a place where you've been ignoring what God has already clearly said, while still expecting him to answer new requests on demand? Prayer isn't a vending machine you can ignore for years and then shake when you need something.

But here's the other side, and it costs you something too: when God is silent, the right move is to wait, to lament, to keep asking — not to go find a substitute voice that will tell you what you want to hear. Saul's real sin in this chapter isn't that God didn't answer; it's what he does next — he seeks out a witch instead of staying in the dark with God. That's the temptation for you too: horoscopes, obsessive advice-seeking, numbing distraction, anything that promises certainty without repentance. The cost this verse asks of you is patience in the silence, and honesty about why it might be there.

• Lord, show me honestly if there are places where I've ignored what you've already clearly said to me, even as I keep asking you for new answers.
• When you are silent, give me the patience to wait on you rather than the panic that runs to false comforts or counterfeit voices.
• Thank you that in Jesus you have spoken fully and finally — help me to listen to him before I demand a new word.
• Father, I don't want to be someone who only turns to you in crisis; teach me to walk with you daily so our relationship isn't built only on emergencies.
• Where I feel far from you right now, draw me back — not to a quick answer, but to yourself.

• Is there a specific area of your life where you already know what God has said, but you've been quietly ignoring it while still asking him for guidance elsewhere?
• When God has felt silent to you, what have you turned to instead of waiting on him — and what did that substitute actually give you?
• Saul only sought God seriously once he was terrified. Does your own prayer life spike in crisis and go dormant in comfort? What does that pattern say about your heart?
• If God stayed completely silent to you for the next year, would you keep seeking him anyway, or would you go looking for an "Endor" of your own?
