I Samuel 23:16

Look at what's actually happening here: David is hiding in the wilderness of Ziph, in a wooded area called Horesh, running for his life. His own king is hunting him with an army. He has just watched Saul slaughter eighty-five priests at Nob for the "crime" of helping him ( 1 Samuel 22:18-19). He's got nothing — no throne, no army, no safety, and apparently no friends brave enough to be seen with him. Then Jonathan, Saul's own son, the crown prince who would lose everything if David became king, walks into the woods to find him.

Notice the verb: Jonathan "strengthened his hand in God." Not "cheered him up." Not "told him it would all work out." He pointed David back to God as the actual ground of his confidence John Gill. This is a specific kind of friendship — the kind that doesn't just sit with you in your pain but redirects your eyes to the one thing that's actually true and solid when everything else is falling apart.

What's easy to miss: Jonathan already knows, and says out loud in the next verse, that David will be king and he himself will not ( 1 Samuel 23:17). He's encouraging the man who will take his own inheritance. That's not natural. That's not "networking" or hedging his bets — it's costly loyalty to what he believes God has actually decreed Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

This sits inside a long section of 1 Samuel (chapters 19-27) tracking David's years as a fugitive — the training ground before the throne, where God is shaping a king's character in the wilderness rather than handing him power on a silver platter Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. There isn't much doctrinal disagreement over this verse itself; where traditions differ is more in emphasis — some read Jonathan mainly as a moral example of loyal friendship, others push further and see in his self-sacrificing love toward the anointed-but-not-yet-crowned king a foreshadowing of something bigger, which we'll get to.

1 Samuel was compiled from earlier sources into its final form sometime before the Babylonian exile — the disaster of 586 BC when Nebuchadnezzar's army destroyed Jerusalem — likely during the united or early divided monarchy period, roughly the 900s-600s BC, telling the story of Israel's transition from tribal judges to kings. The events themselves happened around 1010 BC or so, near the very end of Saul's reign.

Here's the political situation: Samuel had already secretly anointed David as the next king ( 1 Samuel 16:13), but Saul is still very much on the throne, increasingly paranoid and violent as he senses his dynasty slipping away. David has become a national hero — he killed Goliath, he's a skilled commander, the women sing songs about him ( 1 Samuel 18:7) — which makes Saul see him not as an asset but as a rival. Saul has just committed a massacre: he ordered his own priests killed at Nob because one of them, Ahimelech, gave David food and a sword, not even knowing he was a fugitive ( 1 Samuel 22:6-19).

David is now living as an outlaw with a band of about 600 men ( 1 Samuel 23:13), moving through the rugged hill country of Judah — caves, forests, wilderness terrain good for hiding but brutal for survival. Horesh, where this verse takes place, was in the wilderness of Ziph, near modern Hebron — rocky, sparse country. Saul is actively hunting him with royal troops. Meanwhile the local Ziphites, David's own countrymen, will shortly betray his location to Saul for political favor ( 1 Samuel 23:19) — so loyalty is in short supply everywhere except, remarkably, from the one person with the most to lose: the king's own son.

The engine of this whole verse is one Hebrew verb: חָזַק (châzaq, H2388) Strong's. It means to fasten onto something, to seize it, to become strong or firm — and here it's used causatively: Jonathan made David's hand strong. It's a physical, gripping word, not a vague pep talk. Picture someone grabbing your slipping hand and clamping it tight so you don't fall — that's the texture of the word.

Paired with it is יָד (yâd, H3027) Strong's, "hand" — the part of the body that acts, grips, fights, works. In Hebrew, strengthening someone's "hand" often means strengthening their resolve to keep doing something hard, not just their emotions. David's hand had been busy running, hiding, surviving — Jonathan strengthens the very thing David needs to keep functioning.

And then the crucial phrase: "in God" — בֵּאלֹהִים, from אֱלֹהִים (ʼĕlôhîym, H430) Strong's. This little preposition does massive work. Jonathan didn't strengthen David's hand in himself, in their friendship, or in David's own courage — he strengthened it in God. The old Aramaic Targum translation actually renders this as "he strengthened him in the Word of the Lord," which some older commentators saw as reaching toward something even bigger John Gill.

Worth noticing too: David's own name comes from a root meaning "beloved" (H1732), and Jonathan's name literally means "Yahweh has given" (H3083) Strong's — a small but fitting detail, since what Jonathan does here is give David back to God's hands.

This verse won't bear a direct prophecy — Jonathan isn't a type of Christ standing in for him. But look at the shape of what's happening, because it's a pattern that gets fulfilled, not just echoed.

Jonathan strengthens the anointed king — the one already chosen by God but not yet enthroned, currently despised, hunted, and stripped of everything the world thinks a king should have. That's exactly the shape of Jesus's first coming: anointed, declared, and yet walking toward a cross before any crown. And notice what Jonathan actually gives David — not a strategy, not soldiers, not supplies. He gives him God. He points him back to the promises, the covenant, the character of the Lord who had already spoken over David's life.

That is precisely what Jesus does for Peter in Luke 22:32 — "I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail." And it's what an angel does for Jesus himself in the garden of Gethsemane, Luke 22:43 — strengthening him not by removing the cup, but by ministering to him as he faced it. The pattern holds all the way up: even the Son needed strengthening in the hour of greatest pressure, and he received it from heaven.

And here's the quiet echo worth sitting with: David later does for himself exactly what Jonathan did for him. In 1 Samuel 30:6, when his own men are talking about stoning him, there's no Jonathan left — Saul killed him. So David has to strengthen himself "in the LORD his God." Jonathan taught him how. That's discipleship — someone shows you where the strength actually comes from, and eventually you go there yourself, even alone. Jesus does that for you too: he doesn't just strengthen you in the moment, he trains your hand to reach for the same God when no one else is in the room. Paul later tells Timothy the same thing — "be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus" ( 2 Timothy 2:1).

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: when was the last time you strengthened someone's hand in God, rather than just in you, or in circumstances, or in positive thinking?

It's so much easier to comfort people with distraction, with flattery, with "it'll all work out." Jonathan didn't do that. He walked into real danger — his father was actively murdering people over David — to say, in effect: God has said this about you, and it's true, so stand on it. That kind of friendship costs something. It requires you to actually believe God's promises are solid enough to lean your whole weight on, and it requires you to love someone else's future more than you love your own comfort or your own claim on the outcome.

Think about who in your life is in the woods right now — hiding, exhausted, running on empty, watching everyone around them either hunt them or stay silent. Are you willing to be a Jonathan? Not the friend who fixes it, but the friend who says, "Let me remind you who God actually is and what he's actually said," and then leaves you stronger than you found you.

And turn it the other way: when you're the one in Horesh — cornered, threatened, forgotten — do you know how to strengthen your own hand in God when no Jonathan comes? David learned it here. He needed it desperately later, alone, in 1 Samuel 30:6. That's the muscle this verse is asking you to build: not dependence on being rescued by good friends forever, but the capacity, learned partly through good friends, to go straight to God yourself when the wilderness gets quiet and nobody's coming.

• Lord, when I am hiding, exhausted, or hunted by circumstances I can't control, strengthen my hand in you — not in my own strategies or in false comfort.
• Give me the courage of Jonathan — to go toward someone who is suffering, even when it costs me something, even when their gain looks like my loss.
• Teach me to comfort others by pointing them to your promises, not just soothing their feelings.
• When no friend comes and I'm alone like David at Ziklag, train me to find my strength in you directly.
• Thank you that Jesus himself was strengthened in his hour of greatest need — help me trust that you meet me the same way.

• Who is the "David in the woods" in your life right now — someone hiding, struggling, or forgotten — that you've been too busy or too afraid to go find?
• Have you ever strengthened someone "in God," specifically, rather than just cheering them up? What would that conversation actually sound like?
• What would it cost you, like it cost Jonathan, to genuinely want good for someone even if their success means your loss?
• When you're the one in crisis, do you know how to point your own heart back to God, or do you only function when someone else does it for you?
• Is there a promise God has spoken over your life that you've quietly stopped believing because the wilderness has lasted too long?
