I Samuel 18:1

Look at what just happened right before this verse: a teenage shepherd walked out onto a battlefield with a sling and a bag of stones and dropped the giant who'd been terrorizing Israel's army for forty days. David is standing there, probably still holding Goliath's severed head (17:57), talking to King Saul. And the very next thing that happens — before David gets a title, before he gets a house, before anyone throws him a parade — is that Saul's own son falls in love with him.

That's the plain sense: "the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David." The word "knit" (more on that in a minute) pictures something being tied, chained, bound together — not a feeling that drifts in and might drift out, but a cord that gets fastened Strong's. And then the text doubles down: "Jonathan loved him as himself." Not as a fan loves a hero. As you love your own life.

Here's what's easy to miss if you're reading fast: Jonathan is the crown prince. He is the one with everything to lose. David has just been anointed in secret back in chapter 16 to be the next king — which means, by any normal court logic, Jonathan's rival has just walked onto the stage. And instead of jealousy, instead of positioning himself against the threat, Jonathan loves him. Some readers today wonder whether this is describing something more than friendship, but the text gives no hint of that — the vocabulary here is the same "love as yourself" language used for covenant loyalty and deep human affection elsewhere in the Old Testament, and nothing in the narrative suggests otherwise Tyndale. What the text does insist on is that this is one of the most selfless human relationships in the whole Bible — a man loving, at cost to himself, the person destined to take what should have been his.

In the bigger story of 1 Samuel, this verse plants the seed for chapter 20, where Jonathan will risk his life to warn David and hand his own claim to the throne, and for 2 Samuel 1, where David will grieve Jonathan's death with words no other friendship in Scripture earns.

1 Samuel was likely put into its final written form sometime during or after the united monarchy, drawing on older court records and prophetic accounts — scholars debate the exact date, but the events themselves happened around 1010 BC, in the last years of Saul's troubled reign over Israel. Israel at this point is a young, fragile kingdom. They'd begged God for a king "like the other nations" ( 1 Samuel 8:5), gotten Saul, and it was already going badly — Saul was tall, strong, and increasingly paranoid, having already been told by the prophet Samuel that God was tearing the kingdom from him ( 1 Samuel 15:28).

Into that unstable court walks David — not a nobody, but definitely an outsider. He's the youngest of eight sons from a shepherding family in Bethlehem, a small town with no political weight. He'd already been secretly anointed by Samuel back in chapter 16, though almost no one at court knows what that anointing means yet. What everyone at court has just seen, though, is a public spectacle: the Philistine army (Israel's most dangerous enemy, occupying territory to the west) had a nine-foot champion named Goliath mocking Israel's God and army for over a month, and this shepherd boy killed him with a slingstone before the whole camp.

Royal courts in this world ran on suspicion and succession politics — a king's sons watched every rising star as a potential threat to their inheritance. That's the normal script Jonathan breaks. Ancient Near Eastern culture also prized covenant friendships and loyalty bonds sealed with oaths and gifts (which is exactly what happens two verses later in 18:3-4, when Jonathan strips off his own robe and armor and gives them to David) — a formal, costly declaration of allegiance, not a private feeling.

The verb that carries this whole verse is קָשַׁר (qashar, H7194) — "to tie, bind, or knit together," used for physically tying something as well as for binding hearts in loyalty or love Strong's. The Bible uses the same root elsewhere for chains and cords — this isn't soft, sentimental language. It's the language of something fastened so it won't come apart. Keil-Delitzsch points out the word pictures the soul literally "chaining itself" to another soul, the same image used in Genesis 44:30 when Jacob's life is described as "bound up" with his son Benjamin's Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament.

The word translated "soul" is נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh, H5315) — not some ghostly inner spirit floating apart from the body, but the whole living, breathing self: your appetites, your will, your very life-force Strong's. So when the text says Jonathan's nephesh was knit to David's nephesh, it means the whole of Jonathan — not a slice of him, not his admiration or his curiosity — got bound to the whole of David.

Then there's אָהַב ('ahab, H157), the ordinary Hebrew word for "love" — used for everything from romantic love to a father's love for a son to loyalty between allies Strong's. It's a wide word, and the text narrows it here by comparison: he loved David as himself, the exact standard God later commands in Leviticus 19:18 for how you're supposed to love your neighbor. Jonathan isn't praised for a unique feeling; he's shown living out, ahead of the Law's full unfolding, the very love God asks of everyone.

Worth noting: David's own name, דָּוִד (David, H1732), comes from a root meaning "beloved" — so there's a quiet irony that the man whose name means "beloved" is, in this very scene, becoming exactly that Strong's.

Jonathan is the crown prince. Everything that's rightfully his — the throne, the inheritance, the future — is standing right in front of him in the person of David, and instead of guarding it, he gives it away in love. He'll say it plainly a couple chapters later, in 1 Samuel 23:17: "You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you." That's not resignation. That's a prince choosing to love and serve the one who will displace him, at real personal cost.

You don't have to squint hard to see the shadow of something bigger here. There is another Son — the true Son, with an eternal throne that was rightfully his — who looked at people who had nothing to offer him, who were in fact rebels against his kingdom, and instead of guarding his position, emptied himself, took the form of a servant, and gave everything so that others could reign with him ( Philippians 2:6-8; Revelation 3:21). Jonathan loved a future king who would eventually eclipse him. Jesus loved people who had actively worked against his kingdom, and he did more than step aside for them — he died in their place.

Paul's language in Colossians 2:2 uses the very same picture the Hebrew paints here — hearts "knit together in love" — but he applies it to what happens when people are united not to each other first, but to Christ. The friendship of David and Jonathan is a real, beautiful, costly human love — and it's also a small window into the shape of the love that holds the whole gospel together: someone with everything to lose, loving someone else as himself, and giving up his claim so the other could have the crown. Jonathan gives David his robe and armor in the next verse; Jesus gives you his righteousness ( 2 Corinthians 5:21). The pattern echoes even where the text doesn't point directly to him.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: who is your David? Who is the person whose success threatens something you thought was yours — your position, your recognition, your sense of being the special one — and how do you actually feel when they win?

Most of us don't get tested by giants. We get tested by someone else getting the promotion, the compliment, the answered prayer we'd been praying for ourselves. And in that moment, the honest posture of most human hearts isn't Jonathan's. It's Saul's — the very next chapters show us Saul's jealousy curdling into an attempt to murder David with a spear ( 1 Samuel 18:11; 19:10). Same situation, two completely different hearts. Jonathan and Saul stood in the exact same spot — watching David rise while their own position looked shakier — and one loved, and one tried to kill.

The cost this verse asks of you isn't abstract. It's specific: the next time you watch someone else get chosen, praised, or blessed in a way you wanted for yourself, notice what rises in you. And then do the harder thing — bind your soul to theirs anyway. Rejoice with them. Give something away, the way Jonathan gave his robe. That's not natural. It's not even admirable in the eyes of the world, which tends to call it weakness or naivety. It's supernatural, and it only makes sense once you've received a love like that yourself — a King who gave up everything to love you as himself, though you had nothing to offer him back.

• Lord, show me honestly whether my heart looks more like Jonathan's or Saul's when someone else succeeds where I wanted to.
• Thank you that Jesus, the true King, loved me and gave himself up for me while I had nothing to offer him in return.
• Give me at least one friendship like this — costly, loyal, without envy — and help me be that kind of friend to someone else.
• Where I'm clinging to a position or a title out of fear of being replaced, teach me to hold it with open hands.
• Knit my heart to yours, God, the way Jonathan's soul was knit to David's — fully, not halfway.

• Think of someone whose recent success made you feel small or overlooked. What did that feeling actually reveal about what you're building your worth on?
• Jonathan had the most to lose in this relationship and loved anyway. What would it cost you, specifically, to love the person you see as a rival or a threat?
• Is there a friendship in your life that could use "knitting" — an intentional, costly commitment rather than just circumstance keeping you close?
• Where in your life are you playing Saul without admitting it — smiling at someone's success while quietly plotting how to stay ahead of them?
• How does knowing Christ loved you before you had anything to offer him change how you love people who currently outshine you?
