I Samuel 16:7

Picture the scene: Samuel is standing in Jesse's house, looking at Eliab—the oldest son, tall, strong, probably the kind of guy who fills a doorway. Samuel's already thinking, "This has to be him." That's exactly the moment God interrupts him. God doesn't say "Eliab is a bad guy." He says something more pointed: stop looking the way you're looking. "Do not consider his appearance or height" — the Hebrew word for "consider" here, nabat (H5027), means to gaze intently, to fix your eyes on something with real interest Strong's. Samuel isn't glancing; he's studying the guy, sizing him up the way you'd size up a job candidate by his handshake and his suit.

Then comes the line that echoes through the rest of Scripture: "man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart." The word for "heart" here, lebab (H3824), isn't just feelings — in Hebrew thought the heart is the control room of a person: their will, their motives, their character, the stuff that doesn't show up in a photograph Strong's. God isn't saying appearance is meaningless. He's saying it's not the criteria. Samuel had already been burned once — Saul was head and shoulders above everyone ( 1 Samuel 9:2), looked every inch a king, and turned out to be a disaster. God is course-correcting Samuel's whole way of evaluating people.

This verse sits at a hinge point in the book: Saul's kingship has just been declared over, and God is quietly, privately choosing his replacement in a shepherd's house in Bethlehem — nobody in Israel knows this is happening yet Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. Where readers sometimes disagree: some take this as God contrasting himself with human judgment in general (a statement about how God evaluates all people, always); others read it more narrowly as God correcting Samuel's specific mistake with Eliab in this moment. Both are true, but it's worth noticing the verse doesn't erase the first reading for the second.

First Samuel was likely written or compiled sometime after Israel had kings — pulling together older sources, prophetic records, and royal archives — probably finalized in the 6th century BC, though the events themselves happened around 1020–1000 BC. The immediate setting: Saul, Israel's first king, has just been told by Samuel that God has rejected him from being king ( 1 Samuel 15:23) because of his disobedience. Samuel is grieving this — he'd invested years in Saul — and God essentially tells him to stop mourning and get moving ( 1 Samuel 16:1).

So God sends Samuel, quietly and at some personal risk (Saul is still on the throne and would kill Samuel for anointing a rival), to the small town of Bethlehem to the family of Jesse. This is not a royal city. Bethlehem was a nowhere town in the tribal territory of Judah, known for nothing in particular at this point in history — it would take another thousand years before its name meant anything to anyone outside Israel. Jesse's family was a farming and shepherding household, not political players.

In the world of the ancient Near East, kings were chosen — by human societies, at least — based on exactly the things God tells Samuel to ignore: height, bearing, military prowess, an imposing presence. Saul himself had been chosen partly because he stood "a head taller than any of the people" ( 1 Samuel 9:2). Samuel had watched that experiment fail catastrophically, and yet even he — a prophet who talked with God directly — instinctively falls back into judging by the same external standard when he sees Eliab. A few words carry the whole weight of this verse. First, נָבַט (nabaṭ, H5027) — "consider" or "look" — means to gaze intently, to stare with real focus, sometimes even with pleasure or favor Strong's. This isn't a casual glance; Samuel is genuinely evaluating Eliab, weighing him like a judge at a competition.

Then there's מַרְאֶה (mar'eh, H4758), "appearance" — literally "the thing seen," from the root "to see." It covers everything from general looks to a strikingly handsome build Strong's. Paired with קוֹמָה (qomah, H6967), "height," you get the exact two things that made Saul look like king material back in chapter 9 — stature and stature's cousin, an impressive build.

The turning word is מָאַס (ma'as, H3988), "rejected" — a strong word meaning to spurn, to refuse, to cast off Strong's. It's the same verb used of Saul's own rejection in 15:23. God is saying: whatever Samuel is seeing in Eliab, God has already spurned it as a qualification.

But the word that lands hardest is לֵבָב (lebab, H3824), "heart" — described as "the most interior organ," the seat of will, intention, and character, not just emotion Strong's. Set against עַיִן (ayin, H5869), "eye," the verse draws a hard line: human eyes stop at the surface; God's sight goes all the way to the control room of a person's life. Even the verb for "see" changes register — רָאָה (ra'ah, H7200) is used for both, but only God's seeing reaches the lebab. Same verb, radically different depth of vision.

This verse is the seedbed of David's whole story — and David's story is the seedbed of Jesus' story. God picks the youngest, the overlooked one out watching sheep while his brothers stand in the receiving line, and makes him king. A thousand years later, in that same small town of Bethlehem, God does it again, even more scandalously: he sends his Son not into a palace but into a feeding trough, born to a peasant girl and a carpenter, with no stature, no impressive appearance to speak of. Isaiah had already said it would be this way: "He had no stately form or majesty... nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him" ( Isaiah 53:2). The world looked at Jesus the way Samuel looked at Eliab, and missed him completely — the religious leaders rejected him precisely because he didn't look like what they expected a king or a Messiah to look like.

Jesus himself picks up this exact principle and turns it into a command: "Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging justly" ( John 7:24). He's not just teaching a nice ethic — he's asking people to see him the way God sees, since he himself is the ultimate case of someone whose heart — his obedience, his love, his righteousness — mattered infinitely more than his résumé or his looks.

And there's a deeper comfort buried here for you: the God who looks past David's shepherd clothes to see a heart after his own ( 1 Samuel 13:14) is the same God who, in Christ, looks past your own outward mess — your failures, your unimpressive record — and deals with the real you underneath. Hebrews 4:13 says nothing is hidden from him. That could be terrifying. But because of Jesus, it's also where mercy lives — he sees exactly what's there, and still chooses to love and remake it.

Here's the uncomfortable part: you do this too. Every single day you size people up in half a second — their clothes, their job title, their body, how confidently they walk into a room — and you build a verdict about their worth before they've said a word. And you know something worse: you curate yourself the same way for other people, hoping the outside sells well enough that nobody checks what's underneath.

This verse doesn't just correct Samuel. It exposes you. God isn't impressed by your resume, your Instagram, your Sunday best, your carefully managed reputation. He's already past all of that, looking straight at the actual condition of your heart — your real motives, the things you do when no one's grading you, what you love when nobody's watching.

That should terrify you a little. And it should also relieve you completely. Because it means the parts of you that you're most ashamed to show anyone — God already sees them, and he's not stunned. He's not going to be more disappointed in you tomorrow when the mask slips. He's dealing with the real you right now.

The cost this verse asks of you: stop managing your image with God. Stop performing spirituality for an audience — even an audience of one, yourself. And stop scanning the people around you by their surface. That coworker who dresses badly, that relative with no social polish, that person at church who doesn't fit — God may already be doing something in their heart that you'll never guess by looking at them. Ask him today to retrain your eyes the way he retrained Samuel's.

• Forgive me for the times I've judged people by their looks, their status, or their polish instead of asking what's true underneath.
• Teach me to stop performing for others and to live as someone who is already fully known by You.
• Give me the humility Samuel had to learn — to let go of my instincts about who "looks like" the right person, and trust Your choices instead.
• Thank You that You see my hidden failures and still choose me — help me trust that mercy instead of hiding from You.

• Where in your life are you managing your image more carefully than you're tending your actual heart?
• If God showed you today exactly what He sees in your heart, what would surprise you — good or bad?
• Who have you overlooked or dismissed because they didn't "look the part"? What might God be doing in them that you can't see?
• Does the idea that God sees everything feel more like a threat or a comfort to you right now — and why?
