Ruth 4:13

Read it slow, because the whole book has been walking toward this one sentence. "So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife." No fanfare. No description of the wedding. After three chapters of gleaning in fields, midnight conversations on a threshing floor, and a tense legal negotiation at the city gate, the marriage itself gets a single clause Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Then comes the line that's easy to skim right past: "the LORD enabled her to conceive." Ruth had been married to Mahlon for roughly ten years back in Moab ( Ruth 1:4) with no children. This wasn't a fertility problem the text is embarrassed by — it names it directly. The author wants you to see the hand of God, not just biology. And notice the order of the Hebrew verbs here: Boaz "takes" (לָקַח, laqach) her, he "comes to" her (בּוֹא, bo), and only then does the LORD "give" (נָתַן, nathan) conception Strong's. Human action and divine action sit right next to each other, neither canceling the other out.

Where does this sit in the story? Ruth opened with a famine, three funerals, and two widows with empty hands. It closes with a full harvest, a wedding, and a birth. The barrenness-to-birth pattern isn't new — Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, and later Hannah all walk this same road ( Genesis 25:21; Genesis 29:31; 1 Samuel 1:27) — and the book of Ruth is deliberately borrowing that shape to tell you: pay attention, God is doing something big with this child. Christians haven't disagreed much on the plain sense here, but they do disagree on how much theological weight to put on "the LORD enabled her to conceive" — some read it as a specific, pointed miracle (given her decade of barrenness), others as the ordinary biblical habit of crediting God with every birth (as in Psalm 127:3). Both readings can be true at once.

Ruth is set in the period of the judges — roughly 1200–1050 BC, a chaotic stretch of Israel's history when, as the book of Judges keeps saying, "everyone did what was right in his own eyes." No king, no central government, tribal law enforced locally, and famine or war could wipe out a family overnight. That's exactly what happened to Naomi's family — they fled a famine in Bethlehem for Moab, and she came back a widow with a dead husband and two dead sons, one of whom had married Ruth.

Nobody knows exactly when the book was written down — some scholars place it early, close to the events; others place it centuries later, maybe during or after the reign of David, since the whole point of the ending is to trace David's ancestry ( Ruth 4:17-22). Either way, the original readers already knew who this baby would become: the grandfather of King David. That's the punchline hiding under the plain sentence "she gave birth to a son."

The legal backdrop matters too. Israelite law had a custom called levirate marriage — if a man died without children, his brother (or nearest relative) was supposed to marry the widow so the dead man's name and property line wouldn't disappear (see Deuteronomy 25:5-6). Chapter 4 has just shown Boaz publicly securing this right at the city gate, in front of the town elders, after a closer relative declined Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Marriage in that world wasn't a private romance — it was a legal, economic, and clan-preserving act done in public, which is part of why the wedding itself gets barely a sentence while the negotiation got a whole scene. And Ruth wasn't just a widow — she was a Moabite, a foreigner from a nation Israel had a long, ugly history with ( Numbers 25; Deuteronomy 23:3). Her marrying into Judah's tribe and becoming the ancestor of Israel's greatest king is already a small earthquake under the surface of this quiet verse Adam Clarke.

Three verbs carry this verse, and they're worth slowing down on. First, לָקַח (laqach, H3947) — "to take." It's an ordinary word, used for everything from taking bread to taking a wife, but here it marks the formal, decisive act: Boaz takes Ruth as his own Strong's. Second, בּוֹא (bo, H935) — "to go or come" — used here as the Hebrew's modest, almost shy way of describing the marriage being consummated ("when he had relations with her" is the BSB smoothing out a phrase that literally reads "he went in to her") John Gill. The Hebrew doesn't linger on details; it covers intimacy with a curtain of plain language.

Third, and most important theologically: נָתַן (nathan, H5414) — "to give." The LORD gave her conception. This is the same root you'll find behind "the LORD gave her conception" pattern across the barren-woman stories in Genesis — it's not medical language, it's gift language Strong's. There's also הֵרוֹן (herown, H2032), "pregnancy," a rare word that shows up almost nowhere else in the Hebrew Bible, which makes its appearance here stand out as deliberate — the narrator wants this pregnancy singled out, not just assumed.

Finally, יְהֹוָה (Yahweh, H3068) — the personal, covenant name of God, "the self-existent one." The text could have just said "and she conceived." Instead it names God by his personal name and makes him the direct actor in a woman's womb — the same God who bound himself to Israel at Sinai is now, quietly, in one Moabite widow's body, building the line that leads to David.

This is one of the places in Scripture where you can watch the genealogy of Jesus form in real time, one ordinary sentence at a time. The son born here is Obed — "father of Jesse, the father of David" ( Ruth 4:17). And Matthew opens the whole New Testament by tracing Jesus' family tree straight through this birth: "Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David" ( Matthew 1:5-6). Which means this quiet verse — a Moabite foreigner, a widow with no legal standing, an older kinsman-redeemer who chose to marry her — is a direct link in the chain that ends at Bethlehem thirty-some generations later.

But it's more than a genealogical footnote. Boaz functions in this story as a goel — a kinsman-redeemer, someone with the right and the resources to rescue a family that couldn't rescue itself Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. He pays a price, takes on a name that wasn't legally his to inherit, and by doing so gives Naomi back a future and folds an outsider into the covenant people. That's the exact shape of what Jesus does, except infinitely larger — he's the kinsman who took on flesh to have the legal right to redeem us, paid a price we couldn't pay, and brought outsiders (you and me, Gentiles with no natural claim on Israel's God) into the family by marriage-like union ( Ephesians 5:25-32; Romans 8:17). Matthew's genealogy deliberately includes four women, Ruth among them — all with complicated, even scandalous, backstories — as if to say: from the very beginning, God's plan of rescue ran through broken, unlikely, foreign, grieving people. Ruth's empty womb becoming full is a small preview of the pattern that climaxes when a virgin's womb, by an even more direct act of God, brings the Redeemer himself into the world.

Here's what this verse is quietly insisting on: your ordinary, unremarkable, even painful history is not outside God's attention. Ruth had been married for a decade with no child. She'd buried a husband. She'd left her homeland, her gods, her family, and walked into a country that had every reason to reject her. And in one sentence — no trumpet blast, no angel appearing — "the LORD enabled her to conceive." God was working in the waiting, in the barrenness, in the years that looked like nothing was happening.

You probably have a season like that right now, or you remember one. Years where you did the faithful, unglamorous thing — stayed loyal, kept showing up, kept believing when the evidence said stop — and nothing seemed to change. This verse doesn't promise you'll get the child, the marriage, the breakthrough you're praying for. It promises something narrower and truer: that God is not absent from the waiting room. He was present in Ruth's barren years in Moab just as much as in this moment of conception — he just wasn't visible yet.

The cost this verse asks of you is patience without proof. Ruth didn't get a vision telling her that her line would produce a king, let alone the Messiah. She got fields to glean in, a mother-in-law to be loyal to, and a man willing to keep his word. She obeyed in the dark and let God write the rest of the sentence. That's the discomfort here — you may never see, in this life, what your faithfulness was actually building. Can you trust him with the parts of the story you'll never get to read?

• I confess my impatience with the parts of my life that feel barren right now; give me Ruth's kind of quiet, faithful waiting.
• Thank you that you are the kind of God who "gives" — not a distant force, but a Father who acts personally in the details of ordinary lives.
• I praise you that Jesus is my true kinsman-redeemer, who paid a price to bring me, an outsider, into your family.
• Help me to believe that my faithfulness today might be building something I'll never fully see or understand in this lifetime.

• Where in your life have you assumed nothing was happening, when in hindsight God may have been quietly at work the whole time?
• Ruth left everything familiar — family, homeland, gods — to follow Naomi's God. What is the equivalent thing God is asking you to leave behind right now?
• Do you tend to credit God for the big miracles but not the ordinary "givens" of your life — your health, your children, your circumstances? Why or why not?
• Boaz acted publicly and paid a real cost to redeem Ruth. Where has following Jesus cost you something visible, in front of other people?
• If you never got to see the "outcome" of your current season of faithfulness — no visible fruit, ever — would you still choose to keep obeying?
