Ruth 2:12

Boaz is speaking to Ruth in his own barley field, right after she's collapsed on the ground in gratitude, stunned that this landowner would even notice her — a foreign widow, a nobody. And his words are, on the surface, a blessing: may God pay you back. But look closer at what he's actually doing. He's naming exactly what Ruth has done — left her homeland, her gods, her family, her whole future — to cling to Naomi and to Naomi's God (that's the "work" he's talking about, and it's the same loyalty she vowed back in Ruth 1:16). And he's saying something that only makes sense if you know the God of Israel personally: this God pays wages. Not in the sense of a boss handing you a check, but the sense of a shepherd sheltering a bird under his wing.

That last image — "under whose wings you have taken refuge" — is the heart of the verse. Boaz isn't inventing this picture; it's baked into how Israel talked about God (you'll see it echoed all through the Psalms — Psalm 91:4, Psalm 57:1, Psalm 17:8). A mother bird spreads her wings over her chicks when a hawk circles. That's the picture. Ruth, a Moabite with no legal claim on Israel's God, no birthright, no inheritance, has run under those wings anyway — and Boaz is saying, out loud, that God will honor that.

What's easy to miss: Boaz isn't just being polite. He's about to become the answer to his own prayer. God repays Ruth's loyalty largely through Boaz himself — his field, his protection, eventually his hand in marriage. This sits early in the book, right as the story pivots from famine and loss (chapter 1) toward restoration (chapters 3–4), and it's the theological hinge of the whole book Matthew Henry. Christians don't disagree much on the plain meaning here — the debate, if there is one, is more about how much Boaz already sees Ruth as a picture of Gentiles being grafted into God's people, versus this being read back into the text later.

The book of Ruth is set in the period of the Judges — a rough, lawless stretch of Israel's history, roughly 1200–1050 BC, when (as the book of Judges keeps saying) "everyone did what was right in his own eyes." It was written down later, probably during the united monarchy under David or Solomon (roughly 1000–900 BC), likely in part to explain where King David's family came from — the book ends with a genealogy running straight to him.

Here's the situation on the ground: a famine had driven Naomi's family out of Bethlehem to Moab, a foreign country east of the Dead Sea whose people worshiped the god Chemosh and had a long, ugly history of hostility with Israel. Naomi's husband and both her sons died there. Widowed and destitute, Naomi heads home to Bethlehem, and her Moabite daughter-in-law Ruth — against all sense — insists on coming with her, adopting Naomi's people and Naomi's God ( Ruth 1:16).

Back in Bethlehem, Israel's law had a built-in welfare system: when you harvested your field, you weren't allowed to strip it bare. You left the edges and the dropped grain for the poor, the widow, and the foreigner to pick up ( Leviticus 19:9, Deuteronomy 24:19). That's called gleaning, and it's what Ruth is doing when this verse happens. But gleaning behind the reapers, close enough to actually get a decent amount of grain, wasn't guaranteed by law — it depended on the landowner's goodwill Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Boaz, it turns out, is a relative of Naomi's dead husband, a man of standing in Bethlehem, and he's just discovered that the woman gleaning in his field is the Moabite who gave up everything for his kinswoman. His blessing over her isn't small talk — it's a wealthy Israelite man publicly declaring, in front of his workers, that a Moabite widow deserves the covering of Israel's God.

Boaz opens with יְהֹוָה (Yehovah, H3068) — the covenant name of God, the personal name he gave Israel at the burning bush, not just a generic word for deity Strong's. Boaz is invoking the God who keeps promises, not a vague higher power.

The verb for "repay" is שָׁלַם (shalam, H7999) — related to shalom, and it means to make something whole, complete, settled up Strong's. It's the same root behind the idea of full payment, nothing owed, nothing lacking. Paired with it is פֹּעַל (po'al, H6467), "work" or "deed" — the concrete thing Ruth actually did, her labor and loyalty, not just her intentions Strong's.

Then Boaz doubles down: "a full reward" uses שָׁלֵם (shalem, H8003, "complete") describing the מַשְׂכֹּרֶת (maskoreth, H4909) — a word that literally means wages, what you'd pay a hired worker Strong's. Ruth isn't being handed charity here; Boaz frames God's blessing as an employer settling accounts — full pay, nothing docked.

But the word that carries the whole verse is כָּנָף (kanaph, H3671) — "wing," but also used for the edge of a garment, the corner of a tent, the flap of a robe Strong's. And the verb Ruth used to get under that wing is חָסָה (chasah, H2620) — "to flee for refuge," to run somewhere for cover when danger is close Strong's. Put together: Ruth didn't wander casually into faith. She fled to it, the way you'd run from a storm. That's the same verb the psalmists use when they cry out for God to hide them in the shadow of his wings.

Boaz's blessing over Ruth doesn't stop being just words — he becomes the very hands God uses to answer it. He's a "kinsman-redeemer," a relative with the legal right and the willingness to rescue a family that's run out of options, and by the end of the book he marries Ruth and restores everything she lost. That role — redeemer, the one who pays the debt someone else can't pay and pulls them back into the family — is exactly the shape Jesus takes on for you. Boaz is a small, real, historical picture of a much bigger rescue.

And Ruth herself matters here in a way that's easy to skip past: she's a Moabite, an outsider with no blood claim on Israel's God, and yet she ends up in the direct family line of King David — and from David's line comes Jesus (you can trace it in Matthew 1:5, where "Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth" sits right there in the Messiah's genealogy). A Gentile woman, sheltered under the wings of Israel's God, becomes an ancestor of the one through whom that shelter would be offered to the whole world Matthew Henry. Paul will later describe Gentile believers being grafted into God's people the same way ( Romans 11:17) — Ruth got there first, one field at a time.

And that image of wings — Jesus himself picks it up and puts himself in the place of God. Standing over Jerusalem, grieving, he says, "How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings" ( Matthew 23:37). Boaz prayed that Ruth would find shelter under God's wings. Jesus is the one who spreads them. The reward Boaz promised — full, complete, nothing lacking — is finally paid out at the cross, where the debt gets settled once and for all, and Hebrews 6:10 makes the same promise Boaz made: God does not forget your work.

Here's what should stop you cold in this verse: Ruth had no leverage. She wasn't owed anything. She was a foreigner gleaning leftover grain to keep herself and her mother-in-law alive, and the God she'd run to wasn't even her own people's god originally. And yet Boaz says God sees her — sees the specific, costly thing she did (leaving home, leaving safety, leaving her own gods) — and will settle accounts with her fully.

You probably know what it's like to do the right thing and feel like nobody noticed. To care for a difficult parent, stay in a hard marriage, tell the truth when a lie would've been easier, and watch the world move on like it cost you nothing. This verse says God is not like the world. He watches the unnoticed work. He keeps a ledger you can't see.

But don't just take the comfort and skip the cost. Ruth's "work" only happened because she'd already done the harder thing back in chapter 1 — she'd burned the boats. No plan B, no backup god, no quiet retreat to Moab if this Israelite thing didn't pan out. The refuge under God's wings isn't a vacation spot you visit when convenient; it's what you run to when you've got nowhere else to go. So ask yourself honestly: have you actually taken refuge under God's wings, or are you just standing near the nest, keeping one foot outside in case you need to bolt? The promise of full reward is real — but it's made to people who've stopped hedging.

• Lord, thank you that you see the work no one else notices — the sacrifices I make that never get applause. Help me believe you're keeping account even when I can't see it.
• God, forgive me for the ways I hedge my bets with you — trusting you with one hand while holding onto a backup plan with the other. Teach me what it means to actually flee to you for refuge.
• Thank you for being a God whose wings are wide enough to cover outsiders, foreigners, and people with no claim on you — including me. Let me never think I earned my way under them.
• Jesus, thank you for being the Redeemer that Boaz only pictured — the one who actually pays the full debt. Help me rest in that instead of trying to settle my own accounts.
• Give me eyes to see the "Ruths" around me — people with no leverage, no standing, no claim — and make me willing to be someone's Boaz.

• Where in your life have you done something costly for God or for someone else and felt like it went completely unnoticed? Can you honestly bring that disappointment to God instead of burying it?
• Is there a "backup plan" you're still holding onto — a way of hedging your commitment to God in case it doesn't work out? What would it cost to actually let it go?
• Ruth ran toward God when she had every earthly reason to run home instead. What's the "Moab" you keep being tempted to run back to when following God gets hard?
• Who in your life is like Ruth right now — vulnerable, without status or leverage — and what would it look like for you to be Boaz to them this week?
• Do you actually believe God "pays wages" — that he notices and rewards faithfulness — or do you quietly live like effort for him disappears into nothing?
