Judges 16:28

Look at what's happening here: a blind man, chained between two pillars, mocked by a stadium full of people who gouged out his eyes — and he prays. Not a curse muttered under his breath, but an actual address to God: "O Lord GOD." That's two different names for God stacked together in the Hebrew — Adonai (Master) and YHWH (the covenant name, the "I AM" who bound himself to Israel) Strong's. This isn't Samson talking to some vague cosmic force. He's calling on the specific God who made promises to his people, and specifically to him, before he was even born.

The plain content: Samson asks God to remember him — not because God forgets, but because "remember" in Hebrew carries the weight of "act on behalf of" Strong's. He asks for strength one more time. And he states his purpose plainly: payback for his eyes.

What's easy to miss is how mixed this moment is. It's genuine prayer — dependent, humble, addressed to the right God — and it's also personal vengeance dressed as public service. He doesn't pray "let your name be glorified" or "deliver your people"; he prays "pay back the Philistines for my two eyes." Commentators have long debated whether to read this as a noble act of self-sacrifice for Israel's sake or as a man's last selfish reach for revenge wearing the costume of duty Jamieson-Fausset-Brown John Gill. Both readings sit uncomfortably close together in the same nine words, and the text doesn't fully resolve the tension — that's honest to say out loud rather than smooth over.

This verse sits at the very end of Samson's story, the last of the judges before Israel's slide into the chaos and moral collapse of Judges 17–21. It's his final act after twenty years of a strength given by God and squandered by lust, betrayal, and self-will Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament.

The book of Judges covers roughly 1200–1050 BC, the centuries after Israel entered Canaan but before it had a king — "everyone did what was right in his own eyes" is the book's own summary of the era ( Judges 21:25). Samson's specific chapter of that story plays out around the mid-1100s BC, in the hill country of Dan, right on the border with Philistine territory along the Mediterranean coast.

The Philistines were Israel's most persistent enemy during this period — a seafaring people with iron weapons and fortified cities (Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and others), technologically ahead of Israel and constantly pressing into Israelite land. God had raised Samson up as a judge — not a king, but a Spirit-empowered deliverer — specifically "to begin the deliverance of Israel from the hand of the Philistines" ( Judges 13:5). He was set apart from birth as a Nazirite, meaning he'd taken vows including never cutting his hair, as a sign of being dedicated to God.

By the time we reach this verse, Samson has already burned through that calling in spectacular and tragic fashion: chasing Philistine women, visiting a prostitute in Gaza, and finally falling for Delilah, who wore him down until he revealed the secret of his strength. The Philistines cut his hair, gouged out his eyes, bound him in bronze chains, and put him to work grinding grain like an animal in the prison at Gaza — a public humiliation meant to prove their gods (Dagon, chief among them) had beaten Israel's God. The scene of this verse is a massive temple festival, thousands of Philistines gathered to celebrate Dagon and mock the blind, broken strongman they've paraded out for entertainment. That's the noise, the smell of sacrifice, the crowd Samson is standing in — sightless, humiliated, and about to pray.

Samson calls out using אֲדֹנָי (Adonai, H136) — "Master" or "Lord," a term of authority — paired with יְהֹוִה (a form of YHWH, H3069), the covenant name of God revealed to Moses Strong's. Putting these together the way he does is how Hebrew avoids saying "Lord Lord" out loud — but the effect is to pile up both the authority and the intimacy of God's name in one breath. This is not a generic cry to "the universe." It's an appeal to the specific God of Israel's covenant.

He asks God to זָכַר (zakar, H2142) him — "remember" Strong's. In Hebrew thought, this word rarely means simple mental recall; it means to act, to bring the past promise into present reality. When God "remembers" Noah in the flood, the water starts receding ( Genesis 8:1). So Samson isn't asking God to recall a fact — he's asking God to move.

Then he asks God to חָזַק (chazaq, H2388) him — "strengthen," a word that carries the idea of seizing hold of something, fastening onto it with force Strong's. It's the same root used elsewhere for hardening or fortifying — Samson is asking God to grip him with power he no longer has on his own.

Finally, נָקַם / נָקָם (naqam / naqam, H5358/H5359) — "avenge, vengeance" Strong's — is a word usually reserved in the Old Testament for God's own prerogative ( Deuteronomy 32:35, "Vengeance is mine"). Samson uses it for himself, which is exactly the theological tension baked into this prayer.

Samson is one of the strangest, most flawed pictures of a deliverer in the whole Bible — and that's precisely why he points forward to Jesus by contrast as much as by comparison Matthew Henry. Both men are set apart before birth for a rescue mission. Both are betrayed by someone close to them for a price — Samson by Delilah, Jesus by Judas. Both are seized, mocked, and put on public display by their captors. Both die in a final act that destroys their enemies' power — and both die surrounded by the very people who hate them.

But here's where the line bends rather than runs straight: Samson dies asking God to remember him, to strengthen him, to avenge his eyes. His last words are personal — understandable, even sympathetic, given the horror done to him, but personal all the same. Jesus, dying in a far more brutal public spectacle, prays "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" ( Luke 23:34). Samson pulls the temple down in vengeance; Jesus lets the "temple" of his own body be torn down in mercy ( John 2:19-21), and it's precisely by not calling down legions of angels to strike back ( Matthew 26:53) that he wins the real victory — not over Philistines, but over sin and death themselves.

Where Samson's strength returns only once he's been humbled to nothing, Jesus' power is most fully shown in weakness willingly embraced ( 2 Corinthians 12:9), not weakness forced on him by betrayal. Samson is a flawed, real echo of a deliverer who saves through his own death — but Jesus is the one who does it without the vengeance, without the self-interest, and without needing his enemies to lose their sight so he can win.

Here's what gets me about this prayer: Samson waited until he had nothing left before he really cried out to God. Twenty years of strength, and it seems like most of it he just used — spent on his own appetites, his own anger, his own timeline. It's only here, blind and chained and humiliated in front of a mocking crowd, that we hear him actually pray with any depth.

Don't wait for your own version of that room. You don't need to lose your eyes to remember that your strength — whatever kind you've got, whatever you've built your life on — was never really yours to begin with. It was lent to you. The question this verse puts to you isn't "have you hit rock bottom yet?" It's "why does it always take rock bottom to make you honest with God?"

And there's a harder question buried in here too. Samson's prayer is real, but it's also small — bent entirely around his own wound. Ask yourself, when you pray in your worst moments, what shape does your prayer take? Is it "God, be glorified, use even this" — or is it "God, make them pay for what they did to me"? Both can sound like prayer. Only one of them is asking you to let go of something. The cost this verse asks of you is uncomfortable: it's not enough to cry out to the right God in your pain. You have to look honestly at whether your prayer is asking him to act for his glory — or just to settle your score.

• Lord, I confess the times I've spent my strength on my own appetites instead of on you — don't wait for me to lose everything before I turn back to you honestly.
• When I'm wounded and humiliated, teach me to bring my pain to you the way Samson did — but purify my prayers so they're not just about revenge.
• Strengthen me, God, in the places I feel blind, broken, and mocked — not for my own vindication, but so your name is honored in me.
• Help me remember that whatever strength I have was always a gift I'm meant to steward, not a possession I'm meant to spend on myself.
• Where I've wanted others to "pay" for what they've done to me, soften my heart toward the forgiveness Jesus showed even to the people who crucified him.

• Where in your life have you spent God-given strength on things that had nothing to do with what he gave it for?
• Has it taken a genuine collapse — losing something you couldn't get back — to make you pray honestly? What would it take for you to pray that honestly now, before the collapse?
• When you're hurt, does your prayer sound more like "avenge me" or more like "forgive them"? Sit with the honest answer.
• Do you believe God can still use you after your worst failure, the way he used Samson even here? What's stopping you from believing that for yourself?
