Judges 11:27

This is the last line of a long, patient speech. Jephthah — a man Israel had once thrown out of the family for being the son of a prostitute, then dragged back to lead them when the Ammonites came knocking Jamieson-Fausset-Brown — has just spent twenty verses laying out history: land boundaries, old treaties, three hundred years of settled occupation. He's tried diplomacy first, actually tried to avoid the war. Now, at the end, he drops the argument and does something bigger: he hands the whole dispute to God.

Notice the shape of his final sentence. First he denies guilt: "I have not sinned against you" — the Hebrew word for sin here, châṭâ' (H2398), literally means to miss the mark, like an arrow that doesn't hit the target Strong's. Jephthah is saying, "I haven't missed what's right here — you have." Then he flips the accusation: "you have done me wrong" (ra', H7451 — evil, harm) "by waging war" — the word lâcham (H3898) originally meant to consume or feed on, which is a chillingly physical way to describe what war does to a people Strong's. Then the turn: instead of settling it with swords right there, he appeals it upward — "May the LORD, the Judge, decide today." The verb shâphaṭ (H8199) is the same root the whole book of Judges is named after — it means not just "decide a dispute" but "govern, vindicate, set right" Strong's. Jephthah isn't just asking for a verdict; he's asking God to act as King over both nations.

What's easy to miss: this isn't hollow talk. Jephthah genuinely believed God adjudicates between nations, not just individuals — a courtroom scene playing out on a battlefield. Where readers disagree is over Jephthah's theology: is this the language of real covenant faith, or a somewhat pagan-flavored bargain (note a few verses later he treats Chemosh, the Ammonite god, almost as if he's a rival deity with real jurisdiction, verse 24)? Most conservative readers see a flawed but genuine faith — Hebrews 11:32 lists him among the faithful — while others see a man whose theology is still rough around the edges, shaped by the syncretistic world he grew up in Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament.

The book of Judges covers the messy centuries after Joshua's conquest and before Israel had a king — roughly 1200 to 1050 BC, a chaotic stretch where "everyone did what was right in his own eyes" ( Judges 21:25). No central government, no standing army, no capital. Tribes lived scattered across the hill country, and whenever a foreign power leaned on them, God would raise up a "judge" — really a rescuer-leader — to drive them out.

Jephthah leads Gilead, the territory east of the Jordan River, land Israel took from the Amorite kings Sihon and Og back in Moses's day ( Numbers 21). Three hundred years later, the Ammonites — descendants of Lot, living just east of Gilead — decide to reclaim that territory, apparently forgetting (or ignoring) that it was never theirs to begin with; Israel took it from the Amorites, not from Ammon. Before the fighting starts, Jephthah sends messengers back and forth trying to settle this through diplomacy — an ancient near-eastern version of a legal brief, citing land records and precedent Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. This whole negotiation (verses 12-28) is Jephthah's attempt to avoid war by appealing to history and to God as the ultimate witness of who owns what.

The personal backstory matters too: Jephthah was the son of Gilead by a prostitute, driven out by his half-brothers to keep the inheritance for themselves, and forced to make his living leading a band of outlaws in the land of Tob ( Judges 11:1-3). When Ammon threatens, the very elders who exiled him come begging him to lead their army Matthew Henry. So by the time he speaks verse 27, he's a man who has already been wronged once by his own people and denied justice — which gives his appeal to God as Judge an extra edge of personal conviction. He's not just quoting a legal principle; he knows what it feels like to have no human court that will rule in your favor.

The engine of this verse is the word שָׁפַט (shâphaṭ, H8199) — "to judge" Strong's. It's the same root that gives the whole book its name, "Judges" (shophetim). It doesn't just mean "referee a dispute" the way we'd think of a courtroom — it carries the idea of setting things right, vindicating the wronged party, and governing with authority to enforce the verdict. When Jephthah calls God ha-shophet, "the Judge," he's not asking for an opinion. He's asking God to rule as King over Israel and Ammon both, and to act on it.

Paired with that is חָטָא (châṭâ', H2398), "to sin" — literally "to miss the mark," like an archer whose arrow goes wide Strong's. Jephthah's claim "I have not sinned against you" is really "I have not missed what was right toward you." He's staking his whole case on having stayed within the lines God drew.

Then there's רַע (ra', H7451), the word for "wrong" or "evil" that Jephthah throws back at the Ammonite king — the same word used throughout the Old Testament for moral evil, not just bad luck or misfortune Strong's. And לָחַם (lâcham, H3898), "to wage war," whose root sense is "to feed on" or "consume" — a vivid, almost predatory image for what this war will do to both peoples Strong's.

Finally, notice יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) — the personal covenant name of God, not a generic word for deity Strong's. Jephthah isn't appealing to "the gods" in some vague sense; he's appealing to the specific God who made promises to Israel, staking the outcome of the battle on whether Yahweh himself will vindicate the truth.

Jephthah stands in a long line of people in the Bible who, wronged and unable to get justice from other people, hand their case to God instead — Sarah did it to Abraham ( Genesis 16:5), Jacob and Laban did it to each other ( Genesis 31:53), David did it to Saul, twice, while hiding in caves ( 1 Samuel 24:12, 24:15). It's a pattern: when human courts fail you, you appeal upward. Abraham had already asked the deepest form of this question generations earlier — "Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?" ( Genesis 18:25) — and the Psalms keep circling back to the hope that one day God himself will "arise" and finally judge the earth with justice ( Psalm 82:8, 98:9).

Jephthah's cry — "May the LORD, the Judge, decide" — is a small, local instance of a hope the whole Bible is building toward: a day when the wrongs between nations, and between people, don't just get argued about but actually get settled, by someone with the authority and the goodness to do it right.

The New Testament says that day has a name and a face. Jesus tells his disciples "the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son" ( John 5:22), and Paul preaches in Athens that God "has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed" ( Acts 17:31). The Judge Jephthah appealed to on a battlefield in Gilead is, in the fullness of time, the same Jesus who will stand as judge over every nation and every human dispute — but who also, strangely and mercifully, stood in the dock himself first, condemned unjustly so that people who actually have sinned could be acquitted. Jephthah could say "I have not sinned against you" with a clean conscience about this particular dispute. None of us can say that before the real Judge — except that the Judge became the one judged in our place ( 2 Corinthians 5:21).

Here's what gets me about this verse: Jephthah had every reason to take justice into his own hands. He's spent his whole adult life getting wronged — kicked out of his family, denied his inheritance, called back only when people needed his sword. If anyone had earned the right to be bitter and just settle scores his own way, it was him. Instead, at the very moment he's finally got leverage and an army behind him, he stops and says, "Let God decide."

That's the cost this verse is asking of you. Not "trust God when it's easy," but "trust God when you finally have the power to force things your own way, and choose to let him judge instead." Think about the argument you're still replaying in your head — the coworker, the family member, the ex, the person who really did wrong you. You want vindication. You want them to admit it. And you probably could get some kind of victory if you pushed hard enough, said the sharp thing, called in the favor, won the argument. Jephthah had the army to just take Ammon's land and be done with it. He didn't skip the appeal to justice — he still says plainly, "you have done me wrong." Naming the wrong isn't the problem. The problem is deciding you get to be the one who executes the verdict.

Handing it to God doesn't mean pretending nothing happened. It means refusing to be your own judge, jury, and executioner — because you know, if you're honest, that your verdicts always come out a little too favorable to you. Today's the day for one particular grudge you've been quietly gathering evidence for. Say it to God instead of rehearsing it in your head. Let him have the gavel.

• Lord, you are the Judge — I hand you the grievance I've been carrying instead of trying to settle it myself.
• Search me and show me where I'm the one who has actually "missed the mark," even in a dispute where I feel wronged.
• Give me the patience Jephthah had — to try to make peace honestly before I ever reach for a weapon, literal or otherwise.
• Thank you that Jesus is the Judge who was judged in my place, so I don't have to fear the day of real reckoning.
• Teach me to trust your timing — "decide today" — instead of forcing a resolution in my own strength.
