Joshua 9:1

Look at what's happening here: this is a hinge verse. Up until now, Israel has been the one making the moves — crossing the Jordan, marching around Jericho, stumbling at Ai and then taking it. Now the camera pulls back and shows you the whole board. Every king west of the Jordan — up in the hill country, down in the rolling foothills, all along the Mediterranean coast up toward Lebanon — is watching, and they've decided to stop watching and start acting Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. The verse lists six peoples — Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, Jebusites — which is basically the Bible's shorthand for "everybody who lives here and isn't going anywhere without a fight."

What's easy to miss is the timing. These kings had months, maybe longer, to prepare for Israel's arrival. They didn't. Now, after Jericho's walls have fallen and Ai has burned, after Israel has stood at Mount Ebal and read God's law in the middle of enemy territory ( Joshua 8:30-35), the kings finally wake up — and instead of individually surrendering or individually being crushed one city at a time, they do the one thing that could actually work: they unite Matthew Henry. Fear is pushing former rivals into an alliance.

This verse sits right at the seam of the book: chapters 1-8 are conquest as it happens one town at a time; chapters 9-11 are the coalition wars, where whole regions gang up. The very next verse (9:2) tells you they gathered "with one accord to fight" — except one city, Gibeon, which we'll see in verse 3 chooses deception instead of battle. There's no major doctrinal fight among Christian traditions over this particular verse — it's mostly read the same way across Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox commentators as scene-setting for the drama that follows.

Joshua is set around the late 1400s or 1200s BC, depending on how you date the Exodus — either way, this is Israel's first generation in the land, right after forty years of wandering in the wilderness following their escape from slavery in Egypt. The book was likely put into its final form sometime later, but it's telling the story of real events from Israel's earliest days as a settled people.

Canaan at this time wasn't one country with one government. It was a patchwork of small, independent city-states, each with its own king, each ruling a town and its surrounding farmland — think of Italy before it was unified, a bunch of little city governments that sometimes cooperated and often didn't. That's why the verse can talk about "all the kings" as a plural group scattered across three distinct geographic zones: the hill country (the mountainous spine running through what's now the West Bank), the foothills or Shephelah (the rolling land between the mountains and the coast, prime farmland and a natural buffer zone), and the coastal plain running up toward Lebanon and Mount Carmel Tyndale. These were fertile, valuable, defensible regions — nobody was going to hand them over without a fight.

Word of mouth traveled fast in a land this small — you could walk from Jericho to the Mediterranean coast in a few days. News of Jericho's collapsed walls and Ai's smoking ruins would have reached every royal court in the region almost immediately, along with reports of Israel's God-given battle tactics and, perhaps most unsettling, Joshua's brazen move of building an altar and reading the covenant law at Mount Ebal — deep in contested territory, as if he already owned the place John Gill. For petty kings whose entire power rested on controlling a town and its fields, this was an existential threat, and the only rational response was to stop competing with each other and start combining forces against the common enemy Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament.

The word for "king" here is מֶלֶךְ (melek, H4428) Strong's — and it's worth noticing there isn't just one melek in this verse, there are dozens. Canaan wasn't a kingdom; it was a crowd of kinglets, each clutching his own little turf.

The three regions are named with real geographic precision. הַר (har, H2022) means a mountain or hill range — the rugged central spine of the land. שְׁפֵלָה (shᵉphêlâh, H8219) is the "lowland," specifically the rolling foothill country that slopes down from the mountains toward the sea — a name that literally means "the low place" Strong's. And חוֹף (chôwph, H2348) means a sheltered cove or coastline, paired with יָם גָּדוֹל (yam gadol), "the Great Sea" — the Mediterranean. Put those three together and you've got a Hebrew way of saying "everywhere, top to bottom, mountain to shore."

Then there's the list of peoples: חִתִּי (Chittiy, H2850, Hittites), אֱמֹרִי (ʼĔmoriy, H567, Amorites), כְּנַעַנִי (Kᵉnaʻaniy, H3669, Canaanites), פְּרִזִּי (Pᵉrizziy, H6522, Perizzites) — the Perizzites' name literally means "inhabitants of the open country," people without walled cities, farmers and villagers Strong's — along with the Hivites and Jebusites. This exact six-name (sometimes seven-name) list shows up repeatedly across the Torah and Joshua as the standard catalog of "the nations in the land," almost like a formula. When you hear it, your ears are meant to perk up: this is the promise God made to Abraham and to Moses finally being tested against the ground itself.

This verse doesn't mention Jesus, obviously — but it's building the shape of a story he steps into later. Watch the pattern: scattered, competing powers who normally have nothing to do with each other suddenly unite against God's people and God's purposes. You see this exact move again in the Gospels — Herod and Pontius Pilate, a Jewish puppet king and a Roman governor who despised each other, "became friends" the very day they joined forces to condemn Jesus ( Luke 23:12). Political and religious rivals who agree on almost nothing can always agree to unite against the one who threatens their turf.

There's also something here about the name "Joshua" itself. In Hebrew it's Yehoshua — "the LORD saves" — and it's the exact same name that in Greek becomes Iēsous: Jesus. The man leading Israel into contested land, absorbing the fear and hostility of every king in the region, carries the name that the true and better Joshua will bear centuries later. Where this Joshua conquers land with a sword, Jesus will conquer sin and death by letting the world's kings unite against him and kill him — and rising anyway. Hebrews 4:8-9 makes this connection explicitly: Joshua gave Israel rest in the land, but there remains "a Sabbath rest for the people of God," a deeper rest that only Jesus provides.

It's also worth sitting with the ugliness here rather than rushing past it: these are real kings defending real homes, and the violence coming in the following chapters is genuinely hard. The whole Bible's story moves toward a day where conquest by the sword gives way to conquest by the cross — enemies not annihilated but reconciled ( Ephesians 2:14-16). This verse is early in that long road, not the end of it.

Here's what strikes me about this verse: fear made these kings do the smart thing too late. They had every opportunity to notice what was happening — a nation crossing a flooded river on dry ground, a city's walls falling without a battering ram, an altar built in the heart of their own land — and instead of dealing honestly with what they were seeing, they froze, or maybe hoped it would pass them by. It didn't. And now their response is panic dressed up as strategy.

I wonder if you do this too. Not with invading armies, but with the quiet evidence God keeps putting in front of you — the conviction you brush aside, the answered prayer you explain away, the moment you sense he's real and close and you change the subject instead of falling on your face. Fear and denial can keep you circling the truth for a long time before you finally have to respond to it, one way or another. These kings responded with resistance. That's a live option for you too — not open rebellion, necessarily, but a quiet, managed defiance, negotiating with God instead of surrendering to him.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty about timing. Don't wait until the walls have already fallen to take God seriously. Don't let fear harden into strategy against him. The kings in this chapter had every reason to make peace and instead prepared for war — and it cost them everything. What is God asking you to respond to right now, today, before you've built your defenses too high to come down?

• Help me to see people who feel like threats to me the way you see them — not enemies to defeat, but people you love and want to reach.
