Joshua 7:21

This is a confession, and it's worth noticing how precisely Achan lays it out: "I saw... I coveted... I took... I hid." Four verbs, and they're the whole anatomy of sin in miniature — the same four steps you'll find in Eve's story in the garden ( Genesis 3:6) and in David's on the roof ( 2 Samuel 11:2). Achan doesn't just admit he sinned; he narrates exactly how it happened, step by step, which tells you Joshua's interrogation (verses 16-20) finally cracked something open in him.

What did he take? A gorgeous imported robe from Shinar — that's the region around Babylon, hundreds of miles away, so this was a genuine luxury import, the ancient equivalent of a designer coat Tyndale. Two hundred shekels of silver — real weight of precious metal, since coins as we think of them didn't exist yet Tyndale. And a bar of gold shaped like a tongue (the Hebrew word literally means "tongue," used for a wedge-shaped ingot) Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. All of it should have gone into God's treasury — that was the deal for Jericho, the first city taken in the conquest, set apart entirely to the LORD. Achan didn't just steal; he stole from something devoted to God alone.

Easy to miss: the word "coveted" here (châmad) is the exact same word used in the tenth commandment, "you shall not covet" ( Exodus 20:17) Tyndale. Joshua's readers would have heard that echo instantly — this wasn't some vague greed, it was a direct, nameable violation of the Law they'd just heard read aloud at Mount Ebal a few chapters earlier. In the book's larger story, this sits right at the hinge between triumph and failure: Israel had just won Jericho by faith and obedience, and now one man's hidden sin stalls the whole nation's advance into the land. Christians don't disagree much on the moral reading here, but they do disagree on the fairness of what happens next — Achan's whole family and livestock are destroyed with him (verse 24-25), a corporate judgment that raises hard questions about individual versus communal guilt that the text doesn't fully resolve for us.

Joshua is set right after Moses' death, as Israel crosses the Jordan and begins taking the land God promised them — most scholars place these events somewhere in the 1400s or 1200s BC, depending on how you date the Exodus. The book itself was likely compiled sometime later, drawing on older records, but the events themselves belong to Israel's earliest days as a settled nation.

Jericho was the first city to fall, and it fell in a strange way — the walls collapsed after Israel simply marched around them for seven days, blowing trumpets. Because of that, God had declared everything in Jericho "devoted" — set apart entirely for him, not for the soldiers to loot. Some of it (gold, silver, bronze, iron) was to go into the LORD's treasury; everything else was to be destroyed. This wasn't normal ancient warfare, where plunder was the whole point of fighting — this was a first-fruits offering, the very first city in the land given wholly back to God as a statement that the conquest itself belonged to him, not to Israel's greed.

Achan's loot tells you something about how connected this world already was. Shinar — the plain around Babylon — was hundreds of miles northeast of Jericho, and yet a robe from there had made its way into this small Canaanite city, probably through long trade routes running along the Fertile Crescent Tyndale. That garment wasn't just pretty; it was a status symbol, evidence that Jericho's king or nobility had money and international connections. Silver and gold were the ancient world's real currency — not coins yet, but weighed lumps and bars, valued by the shekel, a unit of weight rather than a stamped coin Tyndale. For Achan, digging a pit inside his own tent and burying it all under the floor where his family lived, this was the ancient equivalent of hiding cash under the mattress — and it meant his whole household was sleeping every night on top of his secret.

The word doing the heaviest lifting here is חָמַד (châmad, H2530) — "to delight in," but with real teeth, since it's the exact verb behind "you shall not covet" in the Ten Commandments Strong's. Achan isn't using a soft word for "I liked it"; he's naming his sin with the Law's own vocabulary. He knew what he was doing had a name.

The robe itself is called an אַדֶּרֶת (ʼaddereth, H155) — something ample, a large or wide garment, here modified by שִׁנְעָר (Shinʻâr, H8152), "Shinar," the plain around Babylon Strong's. This wasn't homespun local wool; it was foreign, expensive, the kind of thing you'd notice across a room.

The gold piece is described with לָשׁוֹן (lâshôwn, H3956) — literally "tongue" — the same word used for the tongue in your mouth, here applied to a gold ingot shaped like one, a tongue-shaped bar Strong's. It's a vivid, almost playful image for something deadly serious: a shimmering wedge of זָהָב (zâhâb, H2091), gold, whose root idea is simply "to shimmer" Strong's — you can almost see it catching Achan's eye in the pile of spoils.

And notice the verb that opens the whole confession: רָאָה (râʼâh, H7200), "to see" Strong's. Sin in Scripture keeps starting with seeing — Eve saw the fruit was good ( Genesis 3:6), David saw Bathsheba ( 2 Samuel 11:2), Achan saw the robe. The eyes are where the trouble usually begins.

There's no direct prophecy pointing to Jesus in this verse, but there's a pattern here that runs straight through the whole Bible and lands hardest at the cross. Achan's sin — one man's hidden greed — brought defeat and death on the whole camp of Israel ( Joshua 7:5, 7:11-12). One person's guilt became the nation's problem until it was dealt with. That's not a comfortable idea, but it's a true one, and it's the same logic Paul uses when he says "as in Adam all die" ( 1 Corinthians 15:22) — one man's sin spreading consequences to everyone joined to him.

The gospel runs that same logic in reverse. Where Achan's guilt had to be exposed, confessed, and paid for by his death before Israel could move forward into the land, Jesus takes on guilt that isn't his — "he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us" ( 2 Corinthians 5:21) — and dies so that everyone joined to him can move forward into the promise. Achan is buried under a pile of stones as a monument to judgment ( Joshua 7:26); Jesus is raised out of a tomb as a monument to mercy that actually satisfies justice instead of just displacing it onto more victims.

There's also a quieter echo worth sitting with: Jesus himself names covetousness and warns that "one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions" ( Luke 12:15), and James traces the same anatomy of sin Achan lived out — desire conceiving, sin being born, sin growing up into death ( James 1:15). Achan is, in a sense, a walking illustration of the very warning Jesus later gives. He's a cautionary tale that Jesus stands in front of and says: don't be him — and then, remarkably, offers to carry the weight of people who already are him.

Here's the uncomfortable part: Achan didn't wake up planning to sabotage Israel's conquest. He just saw something beautiful, wanted it, and figured he could hide it. That's it. That's the whole mechanism behind most of the sin that actually wrecks lives — not dramatic rebellion, just a slow, quiet "I want that" followed by a decision to make it disappear from view.

Ask yourself honestly: what's buried under your tent floor right now? Not literal gold — but the thing you've tucked away where you hope no one, including God, is looking. Maybe it's not even a "big" sin by the world's standards. A robe and some silver doesn't sound like much next to murder or adultery. But God didn't grade it on a curve, and neither should you. The size of the theft wasn't the issue; the hiding was. Achan could have brought it to Joshua the moment his conscience pricked him. He chose the pit instead.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: stop hiding. Whatever you've been managing quietly — the habit, the account, the relationship, the thing you've justified because it seems small compared to what other people do — bring it into the light before someone else has to dig it up. David wrote "search me, God, and know my heart" ( Psalm 139:23) after learning this lesson the hard way. You get to learn it the easy way, right now, in prayer, before it costs you what it cost Achan. That's not a threat — it's mercy, still available, still open, if you'll take it.

• Guard me against every form of greed — help me remember that my life isn't made up of what I own.
• Give me the courage to confess quietly, in prayer, rather than waiting until my sin is dragged into the open.
• Thank you that you don't leave me buried under my guilt — teach me to trust the mercy you've made possible in Jesus.
