Joshua 4:24

Look at what's actually happening here: Joshua just finished setting up a pile of twelve stones at Gilgal — one for each tribe — pulled up out of the middle of the Jordan riverbed at the exact spot where the priests stood while the water stopped flowing so the whole nation could walk across on dry ground. Now he explains why he built the monument. Not one reason, but two, aimed at two different audiences.

First: "so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty." That's outward-facing. God didn't stop the Jordan just to get Israel across a river — he did it as a public announcement to every nation watching, the same way he'd already terrified the Canaanite kings with what he did at the Red Sea forty years earlier (you can hear the echo back to Exodus 15:16, where the surrounding peoples are described as "as still as a stone" with dread). God's mighty acts are never just private favors to his people; they're billboards to the watching world.

Second: "so that you may always fear the LORD your God." That's inward-facing — aimed at Israel itself, and notice the word "always." This isn't a one-time emotional high after a miracle. It's meant to be a permanent posture, something a father points to years later when his kid asks, "What do these stones mean?" (you see that question set up just two verses earlier, in Joshua 4:21-22).

This crossing isn't a private hiking trip — it's a military and political event happening in full view of the region, and everyone on both banks knows it.

The twelve stones weren't decoration. In a world without printed books, a physical monument was how a culture kept memory alive — something a kid could touch and ask about generations later. This is the same logic behind other memorial stones and altars throughout the Old Testament: build something you can see, so the story doesn't get lost in three generations. Joshua is doing for Israel here what Moses did with the Passover meal — turning a historical event into something you can't forget by accident.

The phrase "the hand of the LORD" uses יָד (yâd, H3027) — literally an open hand, "the open one (indicating power, means, direction)" Strong's. That's worth sitting with: not a closed fist swinging a weapon, but an open hand — extended, active, doing something visible. God's power in this verse isn't hidden or abstract; it's a hand you can watch move.

That hand is described as חָזָק (châzâq, H2389) — "strong," and the root carries a sense of forceful, even violent strength Strong's. This is the same word-family used for Pharaoh's hardened heart and for the "mighty hand" language that runs through the Exodus story. Joshua is deliberately echoing that vocabulary — same God, same kind of hand, new generation.

The verb "know" is יָדַע (yâdaʻ, H3045) — not just head-knowledge, but knowing "properly, to ascertain by seeing," and in a wide range of uses including recognition and deep, personal acknowledgment Strong's. God isn't after the nations having correct information about him; he wants them to see and recognize him for who he is.

And "fear" is יָרֵא (yârêʼ, H3372) — "to fear; morally, to revere" Strong's. It's the same word used for reverence toward parents and toward God throughout the Old Testament — not blind terror, but the weight of awe that reorders how you live. Finally, יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) — the personal covenant name of God, "the self-Existent or Eternal" Strong's — reminds you this isn't a generic deity being advertised. It's the specific God who bound himself to Israel by promise.

This verse sets up a pattern that Jesus steps directly into: God acting in power so that people will know him, not just so his own people benefit. The exact same logic shows up in Exodus 9:16, where God tells Pharaoh he raised him up "that My name might be proclaimed in all the earth," and in II Kings 19:19, where Hezekiah prays for deliverance "so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know" the Lord alone is God. God's mighty acts have always had the whole world in view, not just Israel.

Jesus is where that pattern reaches its full weight. Every miracle he did — walking on water, calming a storm, raising the dead — carried the same double purpose as the Jordan crossing: it revealed the "hand" of God at work (John repeatedly calls Jesus's miracles "signs" for exactly this reason — see John 20:30-31), and it was meant to produce not just amazement but fear and faith, the kind that reorders a life. And where Israel walked through the Jordan on dry ground into the land of promise, Jesus himself walked through death and out the other side, opening a permanent way for anyone — not just one nation — into God's presence. That's the bigger fulfillment: what happened at the Jordan was regional and temporary; what Jesus did was global and final, which is why Revelation 7:9-10 pictures a "great multitude... from every nation" finally doing what Joshua's monument was pointing toward all along — recognizing and worshiping the God whose hand is mighty to save Tyndale.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: do you actually still fear God, or have you just gotten used to him?

Israel needed physical stones because human memory is leaky — you can watch God do something staggering and, six months later, be complaining like it never happened (they'd do exactly that, repeatedly, in the book of Judges). You're not different. You've had your own Jordan crossings — moments where God's hand was unmistakably, undeniably present — and if you're honest, some of them have already faded into background noise. The prayer that got answered against all odds. The provision that came from nowhere. The person who's alive, or sober, or reconciled to you, who by all reasonable accounts shouldn't be.

The verse doesn't ask you to feel a fresh burst of awe once. It says "always" — a permanent, load-bearing reverence that shapes how you make decisions, spend money, treat people who can't help you, and respond when you're tempted to think you can handle things without him. That's the cost: fear of God isn't a mood, it's a discipline of memory. It means building your own stones — deliberately telling the story of what God has done, out loud, to your kids, your friends, yourself — so the awe doesn't quietly evaporate into casual familiarity.
