Joshua 24:15

Look at the structure here. Joshua isn't threatening the people — he's doing something almost provocative: he tells them that if serving the LORD seems bad to them (that's what "unpleasing" really means — literally "evil in your eyes," the Hebrew רָעַע, ra'a, meaning something spoiled, worthless, no good Strong's), then fine — pick something else. But look at the menu he gives them. Not "the LORD or nothing." Not "the LORD or some abstract alternative." He names two specific, real options: the gods your ancestors actually worshiped back across the Euphrates River (that's Abraham's people, back in Mesopotamia, before God called him out), or the gods of the Amorites — the very people whose land Israel is now living in John Gill. Joshua is stripping away any illusion of neutrality. There is no "just not deciding." Every single day you're serving somebody.

Then comes the turn: "As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Notice the verb — עָבַד ('abad), meaning to work, to labor for, to be a servant of Strong's — this isn't a preference, it's a commitment of labor, loyalty, allegiance. Joshua isn't just voting; he's binding his household to it before he even hears their answer. That's leadership putting its own skin in the game first Tyndale.

This verse sits near the very end of Joshua — the last recorded speech of the man who led Israel into the promised land. It's a covenant renewal ceremony at Shechem, and this is the hinge of the whole book: conquest is done, land is possessed, and now the real question surfaces — will they actually stay faithful? Where readers sometimes disagree: is Joshua's challenge purely rhetorical (he already knows the answer and is just making a point), or a genuinely open moment where real apostasy was on the table? The text that follows — the people's overconfident "we will serve the LORD" and Joshua's blunt reply that they're not able to (24:19) — suggests it's far more serious than a formality.

Joshua is nearing death ( Joshua 23:14 tells us this directly), and he calls "all the tribes of Israel" together at Shechem — not some random hillside, but a place thick with memory. This is where God first appeared to Abraham and promised him the land ( Genesis 12:6-7), where Jacob built an altar ( Genesis 33:18-20), and where Israel had already renewed the covenant once before, right after crossing into Canaan ( Joshua 8:30-35) Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Shechek was sacred ground for exactly this kind of moment.

The book of Joshua covers roughly the late 1400s to mid-1400s BC (or later, depending on how you date the Exodus) — the generation after Moses, the people who actually crossed the Jordan and fought the battles of conquest. By chapter 24, the fighting phase is basically over. The tribes have their territories. And now comes the danger every conquering people faces: assimilation. Israel is now living scattered among Canaanite towns, farming Canaanite fields, marrying into Canaanite families — and Canaanite religion is not going anywhere. The Amorites (a general term for the peoples of the land) worshiped fertility gods like Baal and Asherah tied to rain, harvest, and childbirth — practical, agricultural gods that made a lot of sense if you were a farmer worried about next year's crop. Joshua also names "the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates" — a pointed reminder that even Abraham's own family, back in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), worshiped other gods before God called Abraham out of that world (see Genesis 11:31-12:1). So Joshua is saying: your family history includes idolatry on both ends — the old country and the new one. There was never a golden age of purity to romanticize.

This is a covenant renewal — a formal, public re-committing to the terms God gave Israel through Moses, done as leadership was about to change hands. It's the ancient equivalent of a nation's founding generation making its final address before passing the torch, and Joshua wants the choice on record, out loud, witnessed.

The phrase "unpleasing in your sight" is literally "evil in your eyes" — רָעַע (ra'a, H7489), a word for something spoiled or broken, rotten Strong's. Joshua isn't asking about a mild preference; he's naming the possibility that serving God might feel, to some of them, genuinely bad — a burden rather than a joy.

"Choose" is בָּחַר (bachar, H977) — to try something out, to test and select Strong's. It's the same root used throughout the Old Testament for God's own choosing of Israel — but here the choosing runs the other direction. God chose them; now Joshua forces the mirror back on them: will you choose Him?

"Serve" — עָבַד ('abad, H5647) — appears in both the challenge and Joshua's answer. It means to work, to labor, and by extension to be enslaved to or in service of Strong's. This is the same word used for Israel's slavery in Egypt. There's an irony baked in: you will always be somebody's servant. The question was never "master or free" — it was always "which master."

Notice too: אֱלֹהִים (elohim, H430) is used generically here for "gods" — the same word used for the true God elsewhere, but grammatically it can refer to any so-called deity Strong's. Joshua deliberately puts Yahweh (יְהֹוָה, Yehovah, H3068 — God's covenant name, the self-existent One Strong's) up against mere elohim — beings that get called "god" but aren't the real thing. The contrast in the Hebrew itself is a quiet argument: only one of these names is the name of the One who actually exists and acts.

Centuries later, on a Galilean hillside, Jesus said something that echoes this same fork in the road with startling precision: "No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve both God and money" ( Matthew 6:24). Same Greek verb-family idea as 'abad — you will belong to somebody. Jesus, like Joshua, refuses to pretend neutrality is an option.

But there's something deeper here than a repeated ultimatum. Joshua stood at the end of his life and said, "as for me and my house" — and he could only guarantee his own household's faithfulness, imperfectly at that. In fact the chapter ends with Joshua telling the people flatly, "You are not able to serve the LORD" (24:19) — a hard, honest word that their promise would outrun their power to keep it. And history proved him right — Judges opens with Israel sliding right back into the very idolatry Joshua warned against.

That's exactly the gap Jesus steps into. Where Joshua could only call people to choose rightly, Jesus actually makes people able to choose rightly — he doesn't just renew the covenant ceremony, he keeps the covenant himself, perfectly, on behalf of everyone who trusts him, and then gives his own Spirit so that "as for me and my house" becomes something sustainable rather than a New Year's resolution destined to fail by spring. Joshua could lead a ceremony; Jesus changes the heart that makes the ceremony real (see Ezekiel 36:26-27, which promises exactly this new-heart fix). And where Joshua's household loyalty lasted one lifetime, Jesus is building "a house" — his own household, the church — that he himself sustains and will present faultless ( Ephesians 5:25-27). Joshua's declaration is a picture of what faithful leadership costs; Jesus is the leader who actually pays that cost himself, on a cross, so his household's "we will serve the Lord" can finally hold.

Here's the thing this verse won't let you dodge: you are not neutral. Right now, today, you are serving something — some god, some master, some organizing loyalty that shapes your money, your time, your fear, your ambition. Maybe it's not a wooden idol. Maybe it's approval, or comfort, or being right, or your own reputation, or the quiet god of "just don't rock the boat." Joshua's challenge assumes what our culture works hard to deny: there's no such thing as "I'm not really religious, I just live my life." Everybody bows to something before breakfast.

And Joshua doesn't ask you to feel enthusiastic about serving God. He starts by naming the honest possibility that it might seem "evil in your eyes" — that following God might genuinely feel like a loss, a burden, the harder road. He's not interested in a fake yes. He wants a real one, chosen with eyes open Adam Clarke. That's what makes his own line so weighty — "as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD" isn't naive optimism. It's a man who's watched forty years of wilderness rebellion and still says, before he knows what anyone else will answer, this is where my family stands.

So here's the cost this verse actually asks of you: decide out loud, today, specifically — not generally, not "someday," not "I'll figure it out later." Name what's currently competing for the loyalty that belongs to God. Then say, the way Joshua did, in front of somebody — your spouse, your kids, your own journal if nothing else — where you and your house actually stand. Not what you'd like to be true. What is.

• Lord, show me plainly what I am actually serving right now — not what I claim to serve, but where my time, money, and fear really go.
• Give me the honesty to admit if serving You sometimes feels like a burden instead of pretending I feel something I don't.
• Like Joshua, let me decide today, out loud, instead of drifting along without ever choosing.
• Strengthen my household — my family, the people under my roof and my influence — to serve You together, not just me alone.
• Where I've promised faithfulness before and failed, thank You for Jesus, who keeps this covenant in my place; renew my heart to actually walk it out.

• If someone watched your calendar and your bank statement for a month with no other information, what god would they conclude you serve?
• Is there a part of your life where serving God genuinely feels like a loss to you right now? Can you name it honestly instead of pretending otherwise?
• What "gods of the land you're living in" — the assumptions and priorities of the culture around you — have quietly crept into your own household without you ever choosing them?
• Have you ever made a declaration like Joshua's — a clear, out-loud commitment — or has your faith mostly stayed private and undecided?
• Joshua later tells the people they're "not able" to keep this promise on their own strength. Where have you been relying on willpower to serve God instead of leaning on what Jesus has already done?
