Joshua 10:13

Look at what's actually happening in the sentence: the sun "stood still" (עָמַד, amad — the ordinary word for standing) and the moon "stopped" (דָּמַם, damam — a word that can mean to go silent, to be stunned motionless) Strong's. This isn't poetic filler — the text is claiming a real, observable, physical event: the great lights of the sky froze in place while Joshua's army finished a battle it was winning against five Canaanite kings who had ganged up on Gibeon, a city that had made a treaty with Israel.

Here's what's easy to miss: the verse quotes an outside source. "Is this not written in the Book of Jashar?" — a book that no longer exists but was apparently a known collection of Israelite war songs and heroic poems, also mentioned in 2 Samuel 1:18 Tyndale. That's a strange thing for Scripture to do — cite its footnotes. It tells you the writer of Joshua is working like a historian, pulling from a source his readers could have checked, not just spinning a tall tale for effect.

Notice too the purpose clause: the sun stood still "until the nation took vengeance (נָקַם, naqam — to avenge, to settle a score) upon its enemies" Strong's. The miracle isn't decorative. It exists to give Israel enough daylight to finish what God had already promised to do for them (see verses 8 and 10 — the Lord had already thrown the enemy into panic and hailstones before the sun ever stopped).

This sits near the climax of Israel's conquest of southern Canaan — the moment the writer wants burned into memory as proof that "the LORD fought for Israel" (10:14). Christians have long argued about mechanism: did the earth's rotation actually pause, was it an optical effect (extended twilight, an eclipse, a mistranslation of "stood still" as "stopped shining"), or is this heightened battle-poetry borrowed wholesale from the Book of Jashar and folded into the narrative without claiming literal astronomy? John Gill The text itself doesn't resolve that — what it insists on is the conclusion in verse 14: nothing like this day has happened before or since.

Joshua's story is set around the late 1400s or 1200s BC (scholars disagree on the exact century), as the Israelites, having escaped slavery in Egypt and wandered forty years, finally cross into Canaan — the land bridge connecting Egypt, Mesopotamia, and everywhere in between, which is exactly why so many small kingdoms were packed into it fighting over it. The book itself was likely compiled and shaped sometime later using older sources, one of which is named right here — the Book of Jashar, a now-lost anthology of victory songs Tyndale.

The scene in chapter 10 is a scramble of political self-preservation. Gibeon, a Hivite city, had tricked Israel into a peace treaty (chapter 9). When Adoni-zedek, the king of Jerusalem, heard that Gibeon had defected to Israel's side, he saw a security threat on his doorstep and rallied four other Amorite kings — the kings of Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon — to crush Gibeon before Israel's growing coalition could get any bigger Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Gibeon called Joshua for help, honoring the treaty, and Joshua marched his army all night to catch the five armies off guard.

The battle itself was already a rout — God sent hailstones that killed more of the enemy than Israelite swords did (10:11) — before the sun-and-moon miracle even happens. So this verse describes the tail end of a single, frantic day: an all-night march, a surprise dawn attack, a hailstorm, a chase, and then, according to the text, time itself stretching to let Israel finish the job before nightfall let the surviving kings escape into the hills. In the world of the ancient Near East, sun and moon were widely worshiped as gods controlling time and fate — so a story where Israel's God simply halts them in their tracks is also a quiet claim about who's actually in charge of the sky.

The verb for the sun is עָמַד (amad, H5975) — the everyday word for "stand," used for a person standing at a doorway or a soldier standing his post Strong's. It's a plain, unspectacular word doing something spectacular: the sun just... stands there, like it's been told to wait.

The moon's verb is different and worth noticing: דָּמַם (damam, H1826), which can mean "to be dumb, silent, astonished, or to stop" Strong's. It's the word you'd use for someone struck speechless. There's something almost eerie about it — not just "the moon stopped moving" but "the moon went still and silent," as if the sky itself held its breath.

The word for "nation" is גּוֹי (goy, H1471) — often used for foreign, Gentile peoples, but here applied to Israel itself, which is a small reminder that Israel, too, is just one nation among nations in this story, chosen but not exempt from being described in ordinary terms.

"Vengeance" is נָקַם (naqam, H5358) — to avenge or settle accounts, the same root behind Samson's cry in Judges 16:28 and the language of Esther 8:13. It's covenant justice language: enemies who attacked God's people are being repaid, not random cruelty.

And "Book of Jashar" — סֵפֶר (sepher, H5612, "document, book") from יָשָׁר (yashar, H3477, "straight, upright") Strong's — literally something like "the Book of the Upright One" or "Book of the Righteous," a title that hints the book preserved poems celebrating Israel's heroes.

This verse doesn't hand you a prophecy that Jesus fulfills line by line — but it hands you something else worth sitting with: a picture of God bending the created order itself to finish a rescue he'd already started. The sun and moon, which pagan neighbors worshiped as gods, simply obey the voice of Israel's God the way a servant obeys a master. That pattern — creation itself yielding to the word of God on behalf of his people — echoes forward every time the Gospels show Jesus doing the exact same thing. When Jesus stands up in a boat and says "Peace, be still!" and the wind and the waves obey him ( Mark 4:39), you're watching the same authority on display: the one who can stop the sun in Joshua 10 is the one walking around Galilee telling storms to sit down.

There's also a quieter echo worth naming honestly: this is a day of judgment on enemies, stretched out so justice could be completed in full daylight — nothing hidden, nothing rushed. Compare that to the day Jesus was crucified, where the sky went dark in the middle of the day ( Luke 23:44-45) — light withdrawn rather than extended, as the ultimate reckoning with sin was carried out not on Israel's enemies but on Jesus himself, standing in the place of everyone who deserved judgment. Same God, same authority over sun and sky, but the pattern runs in the opposite direction: at Jericho and Gibeon, light is given so enemies can be defeated; at Golgotha, light is withdrawn so enemies — you and me — can be forgiven.

Don't force this into a tidy prophecy. It's a family resemblance, not a fulfillment formula: the God who commands the sky for his people's sake in Joshua is unmistakably the same God who walks among us in Jesus, doing it again, closer up.

Before you get stuck arguing about astronomy, sit with the shape of the moment: Joshua asks God for something enormous — stop the sun — in the middle of a battle, out loud, in front of his whole army. That's not a quiet, private prayer. That's a man staking his credibility, his army's confidence, and God's reputation on one bold request. And God says yes.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse hands you: when was the last time you asked God for something that size? Most of our prayers are sized to what we already think is reasonable — help me get through the meeting, give me patience with my kid, heal this headache. Good prayers, all of them. But this verse is a reminder that the God who answers small prayers is the same God who once stopped the sky. The size of your request has never been the limiting factor. Your willingness to ask boldly, in public, staking something on it — that's usually where it stalls out.

There's also a harder edge here you shouldn't skip past. This miracle happened so a nation could finish defeating its enemies — real people, in a real war, with real death at the end of that extended day. The Bible doesn't sand that down to make you comfortable, and neither should you. It tells you God is willing to act decisively and terribly for the sake of a promise he made. That should make you take seriously both his mercy toward you and his seriousness about justice.

The cost this verse asks of you: stop praying safe, sized-down prayers, and stop assuming the hard, uncomfortable parts of God's character can be edited out to keep him tame.

• Lord, forgive me for praying small, safe prayers because I've quietly decided some things are too big to ask you for.
• God, give me Joshua's boldness — to ask you for something enormous, out loud, and stake my confidence on your answer.
• Teach me to take your justice as seriously as I take your mercy; don't let me flatten you into someone who only comforts and never confronts.
• Thank you that the same authority that stopped the sun and moon is at work in Jesus, who calmed storms and carried judgment for me instead of leaving me under it.
• Where I'm fighting a battle right now, help me remember you were already fighting before I asked — like the hailstones that fell before the sun ever stood still.
