Revelation of John 5:1

Start with the first word: "Then." John has just spent all of chapter 4 staring at a throne, at the One seated on it who looks like jasper and carnelian ( Revelation 4:3), at the rainbow and the living creatures and the twenty-four elders. Now his eye drops to the hand. Something is being held, and the whole of chapters 5 through 8 will hang on it.

What he sees is a scroll, not a bound book. Picture a long strip of parchment rolled up into a cylinder, the ordinary shape of a document in John's world. The Greek says it lies "upon" the right hand, which several readers take to mean the hand is open, palm up, the scroll resting on it. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown God is not clutching this thing to his chest. It is presented, offered, ready. The problem in the next verses will not be God's unwillingness but the lack of anyone fit to take it.

Then two details that are easy to skim past. First, it is written "on both sides." Scrolls were normally written on one side only, so a scroll filled inside and out is one that is crammed full, with nothing left to add. Adam Clarke Second, it is "sealed with seven seals." Seven in this book is the number of fullness. This is not casually shut; it is locked down completely. Tyndale

Here is where Christians have genuinely disagreed, and you should know it. What is the scroll? Some say it is God's plan for the rest of history, judgment and salvation together, a kind of script for the world. Matthew Henry Others read it as a title-deed, the ownership papers for creation that humanity forfeited and that only a redeemer can reclaim. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Still others see the Old Testament prophecies themselves, which carried the promise of God's kingdom coming on earth as in heaven. bibleproject.com A fourth view, drawing on Roman custom, sees a will or testament. These are not mutually exclusive, and the text does not settle it. What it does settle is the shape of the scene: here is everything that matters, sealed, and the question of verse 2 is coming: who can open it?

Notice the echo of Isaiah 29:11, where a vision is like a sealed scroll handed to someone who says, "I cannot, because it is sealed." John is deliberately walking you into that old frustration so that the answer in Revelation 5:7 lands with full weight.

The writer is John, a prisoner on Patmos, a small rocky island off the coast of what is now western Turkey ( Revelation 1:9). Most scholars date the book to the mid 90s AD, during the reign of the emperor Domitian, though a minority argue for the late 60s under Nero. Either way, this is a letter sent to seven real congregations in Roman Asia: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, and the rest.

Those churches lived under a government that asked for more than taxes. Cities competed to build temples to the emperor, trade guilds held feasts honoring pagan gods, and a Christian who refused to join could lose business, friends, and sometimes life. Some believers had already been killed ( Revelation 2:13). Others were simply tired and drifting. The question hanging over all of them was: who is really running the world, Caesar or God?

Now look again at that scroll, because John's first readers would have seen something concrete. When a Roman citizen made a will, it was sealed with seven seals, one from each of seven witnesses, and could only be opened when the heir came to claim it. Emperors did this too; Vespasian's will was sealed in exactly this way, and opening it put the will into effect. thegospelcoalition.org There was also a Jewish custom in which a document about property to be reclaimed was sealed seven times. bible.org Whatever else the scroll means, it looked like a legal document about inheritance and ownership, waiting for someone with the right to claim it.

The physical object matters too. A seal was a blob of wax pressed with a signet ring, and a document with its seals intact was proof nobody had tampered with it. Writing on both sides, which the ancients called an opisthograph, was unusual and signaled a document too full to fit on one side. John Gill

And John's readers knew their prophets. Ezekiel 2:9-10 had a scroll written on front and back, full of lament. Daniel 8:26 and Isaiah 29:11 had visions sealed up until the right time. thegospelcoalition.org For a church wondering whether God's promises had stalled, a sealed scroll in God's own hand said: nothing has been lost, nothing has been changed, and it is about to be opened.

A few words do the heavy lifting here.

βιβλίον (biblion, G975), "a roll," a small form of the word for book. Strong's Our word "Bible" comes from this family. The point is not that it is tiny but that it is a rolled document, which is why seals on the outside keep the whole thing shut.

δεξιός (dexios, G1188), "the right side or hand," which the Strong's entry describes as the hand "that usually takes." Strong's That is a quiet irony: the hand built for grasping is here holding something out. The right hand throughout Revelation is the hand of authority and favor ( Revelation 1:17), so the scroll comes with God's full backing.

ἔσωθεν (esōthen, G2081), "from inside," paired with ὄπισθεν (opisthen, G3693), "from the rear, at the back." Strong's Literally the scroll is written inside and behind. The picture is of a document so full the writer ran out of room and kept going on the back.

κατασφραγίζω (katasphragizō, G2696), "to seal closely," is a strengthened form of the ordinary word for sealing. Strong's John did not say "sealed"; he said something closer to "sealed up tight." The noun σφραγίς (sphragis, G4973) is a signet or the stamp it leaves, a mark that protects something from being taken or faked. Strong's A seal said two things at once: this is genuine, and this is not yours to open.

ἑπτά (hepta, G2033), "seven," simply the number, but in Revelation it is never simple. Seven seals means the sealing is as complete as sealing can be.

Put the words together and you have God's authority (right hand), God's fullness (both sides), and God's guarding (seven seals, sealed tight) all resting on one roll of parchment.

Be honest about this: Revelation 5:1 does not mention Jesus. It describes a problem. Everything that matters is in God's hand, and it is shut. The verse is the setup, and the next six verses are the payoff.

John weeps in Revelation 5:4 because "no one was found worthy to open the scroll." Then an elder tells him to stop crying: "the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed" ( Revelation 5:5). John turns to see a Lion and sees instead "a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain" ( Revelation 5:6). And then the moment this verse was built for: "He came and took the scroll from the right hand of the One seated on the throne" ( Revelation 5:7).

So the sealed scroll is, in a real sense, a question whose only answer is Jesus. Isaiah 29:11 said the vision was like a sealed scroll no one could read. Daniel 8:26 said, seal it up, it is for the distant future. Jesus is the one who walks up to the throne and takes it. The heavenly song in Revelation 5:9 tells you why he can: "You are worthy to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased for God those from every tribe and tongue and people and nation."

That is the deep logic. If the scroll is the deed to creation, the cross is the purchase price. If it is God's plan for judgment and rescue, the Lamb who went through judgment is the only one fit to unfold it. If it is the old prophecies, he is the one of whom they spoke ( Luke 24:27). Whatever reading you take, the hinge is the same: worthiness is not won by power but by sacrifice.

This echoes Daniel 7:13-14, where one like a son of man approaches the Ancient of Days and receives dominion. It echoes Jesus' own claim in Matthew 28:18 that all authority in heaven and earth has been given to him. And it fits Philippians 2:8-9, where the one who humbled himself to death is the one God exalts. Revelation 5:1 shows you a hand holding the whole future. Revelation 5:7 shows you whose hand is allowed to take it.

Here is the hard thing this verse does to you: it shows you that the plan exists, and then it shows you that you cannot read it.

Most of us would be fine with a world where God had no plan, as long as we could manage our own corner. And most of us would be fine with a world where God's plan was fully published and we could check it like a calendar. What this verse gives you is neither. There is a scroll. It is in God's right hand. It is full, front and back, with nothing missing. And it is sealed, seven times over, in a way you cannot pry open. Matthew Henry

That is a direct challenge to the part of you that needs to know in order to trust. You want to know why the diagnosis came, why the prayer went unanswered, why the people who do evil keep winning. John wanted to know too; he wept over it ( Revelation 5:4). But notice what God does not do. He does not hand John the scroll. He hands it to the Lamb.

So the cost this verse asks of you is this: give up the demand to read the scroll yourself, and settle for trusting the one who opened it. That is not a small thing. It means letting God keep secrets from you. It means believing that the writing on both sides is complete even when the page of your own life looks blank or torn.

But see what you get in return. The scroll is not in Caesar's hand, not in the hand of the markets or the mob or the illness. It rests on the open palm of the One on the throne, and it is the hand that gives, not the hand that hides. The first readers of this book were watching their friends die and wondering if God had lost the thread. John's answer was not an explanation. It was a scene: the throne, the hand, the scroll, and then the Lamb.

Ask yourself today whether you can worship a God who holds a sealed scroll. Because if you can only worship an open one, you will spend your life weeping like John in verse 4 and never hearing the elder in verse 5.

• Father, I confess that I want to read the scroll before I trust you. Teach me to rest on the fact that it is in your right hand, not mine.
• Lord, when the world looks like it is run by whoever is loudest or cruelest, remind me that your plan is written full, on both sides, with nothing left out and nothing lost.
• Jesus, you alone were found worthy to take the scroll because you were slain. Let my worship today be shaped by your cross, not by my curiosity.
• God, there are seven seals on things in my own life that I cannot understand. Give me patience to wait for your timing instead of forcing what you have closed.
• Spirit, when I am tempted to weep like John because no one seems able to fix what is broken, turn my eyes to the Lamb standing in the middle of the throne.

• The scroll rests on God's open right hand. Where in your life are you treating God as though he were hiding his purposes from you rather than holding them out for the Lamb to open?
• The scroll is written "on both sides," complete and full. What part of your story feels unwritten or unfinished to you, and what would it mean to believe God has already filled that page?
• "Sealed with seven seals." Name one thing you have been demanding God explain before you will trust him. What would obedience look like if the seal stayed on?
• John sees the scroll and does not yet know who can open it. Have you been living more in the grief of verse 4 or in the announcement of verse 5? What keeps you in one or the other?
• If the scroll is the deed to creation and the Lamb bought it with his blood, whose world are you actually living in, and does the way you spend your fear, money, and hope show it?
