Revelation of John 21:4

Look at the first thing God does here. He doesn't hand out a speech. He doesn't sit on a distant throne. He stoops. He reaches down and, with his own hand, wipes the tears off your face — the way a parent thumbs away a child's crying. That's the picture. It's tender and it's physical and it's personal.

Then comes a list of everything that gets abolished: death, mourning, crying, pain. Notice the order. Death comes first because death is the root — it's the thing all the other griefs grow out of. Mourning is what you feel over a coffin. Crying is what leaks out of your eyes. Pain is what your body carries. God names them one by one and says: gone.

The reason is tucked into the last clause: "the former things have passed away." The Greek word for "passed away" is the same one used a few verses earlier for the first heaven and earth vanishing ( Revelation 21:1) Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. This isn't God dabbing at symptoms. The whole old order — the world under the curse — has been rolled up and carried out like a stretcher.

One thing that's easy to miss: this is the very end of the whole Bible's story. Genesis opened with a garden that got cursed; here at the close of Revelation, the curse is fully undone. Every tear that history ever squeezed out of God's people gets personally accounted for and wiped away.

Christians largely agree on the what here — final, unshakable joy in God's presence — but some read these last chapters as a picture of the church's glory even now on earth, while most read it as the perfected life to come Matthew Henry.

This is the last vision in a letter written by John — traditionally the apostle — most likely from the rocky island of Patmos, off the coast of what's now Turkey, somewhere around AD 90–95. He was there because he'd been exiled for his faith.

Understand who first heard this. The book is addressed to seven real churches in Asia Minor, ordinary congregations of people trying to follow Jesus under the shadow of Rome. Some of them were poor. Some were being pressured to burn a pinch of incense and call Caesar "Lord" — and refusing that could cost you your business, your neighbors, sometimes your life. Believers had already died. Grief wasn't theoretical for these people; it was in the room.

So when John writes down a vision of God personally wiping tears from their eyes and abolishing death itself, he isn't offering a greeting-card sentiment. He's handing frightened, mourning people a promise strong enough to stand on when the sword comes out.

And these words weren't brand new to them. Any Jewish reader would have caught the echo of the prophet Isaiah, who centuries earlier had promised that God "will swallow up death forever" and "wipe away the tears from every face" ( Isaiah 25:8). Isaiah spoke that to a people staring down the Babylonian exile — when Nebuchadnezzar's army would eventually flatten Jerusalem and drag the survivors east in 586 BC. The same comfort that steadied exiles now steadies the persecuted church. John is telling them: the promise your ancestors clung to is finally, fully arriving.

The verb doing the tender work is ἐξαλείφω (exaleíphō, G1813) — literally "to smear out," to obliterate or erase Strong's. It's used elsewhere for wiping ink off a page, blotting out a record of debt. So when God wipes your tears, the same word carries the sense of cancelling something — not just drying your face but erasing the whole ledger of grief behind it.

Then notice πᾶς (pâs, G3956) — "every," "all" Strong's. Not "most" tears. Not the tears you cried for respectable reasons. Every tear, including the ones you're ashamed of, the ones nobody saw.

The Greek grammar of "there will be no more death" is blunt and total — literally "death shall be no longer," combining οὐ (ou, G3756), the flat absolute "no," with ἔτι (éti, G2089), "yet, still" Strong's. It slams a door. Death's era is over; it doesn't get an encore.

And πένθος (pénthos, G3997) — "grief, mourning" — is a strengthened word tied to the root for suffering Strong's. It's the deep, heaving grief of loss, not a passing sadness. That's the exact thing God abolishes.

Ask the obvious question: how can God's own hand wipe away every tear? Because a hand can only wipe away what's already been dealt with somewhere else.

Death doesn't just evaporate here. It was defeated — on a specific day, at a specific hill. The whole New Testament calls death "the last enemy to be destroyed" ( 1 Corinthians 15:26), and it's destroyed because Jesus walked into it and walked back out. The empty tomb is why John can write "death shall be no more" and not be lying. Here's the piece that will steady you: the God who wipes your tears is a God who wept. At Lazarus's grave, Jesus cried ( John 11:35). He knows the exact weight of what he's promising to erase, because he carried it in his own body. The hand that reaches to dry your face still has the nail scars in it.

And look at where this lands the whole story. Genesis 3 opened with a curse — thorns, sweat, and "you shall surely die." The Bible is one long journey from a garden lost to a city gained, and Jesus is the bridge between them. Every promise the prophet Isaiah made about swallowed-up death ( Isaiah 25:8) gets its "yes" in him. The wiped tears aren't wishful thinking — they're the receipt on a debt he already paid.

You have a tear in you right now that you don't tell anyone about. You know the one. Maybe it's grief for someone in the ground. Maybe it's a private ache you've stopped mentioning even to God because you're tired of it not going away.

Here is what this verse asks you to believe: that tear is not permanent, and it is not unseen. The God of the universe intends to deal with it personally — not by memo, not by proxy, but with his own hand on your face. And the word he uses means he'll erase it so completely that the record behind it is cancelled too Strong's. Not "you'll get over it." Gone.

But here's the cost, and it's a real one. This promise is for the future — "there will be no more death." Which means right now, in the meantime, you are being asked to grieve as someone who believes this. That's harder than it sounds. It's easy to weep like the world weeps — as if the tear is the final word. The costly thing is to cry and keep trusting; to stand at the graveside and honestly say, "this is not how the story ends."

Don't fake it. God is not asking you to pretend the pain isn't real — he's the one naming death, mourning, crying, and pain out loud, one by one, because he takes them seriously. He's asking you to let the future he promises reach back and hold your present steady. Stop rehearsing your grief as permanent. Start letting the wiped-tear promise change how you carry the ones you haven't cried out yet.

• Father, you see the tear I've hidden even from myself — thank you that you intend to wipe it away with your own hand, and that you don't miss a single one.
• Lord Jesus, you wept at a grave before you conquered it; thank you that the hand reaching for my face still carries the scars that make the promise true.
• Teach me to grieve as someone who believes this — honest about my pain, but never treating it as the final word.
• Where I've stopped bringing an old ache to you because I'm tired of it, help me hand it back to you today.
• Come, Lord Jesus. Bring the day when death is no more and the former things have passed away.

• What is the tear you don't tell anyone about? Have you ever actually named it to God?
• Do you live as though death is the final word, or as though it's a defeated enemy on borrowed time? Where does the difference show in how you spend your days?
• Is there a grief you've been carrying as permanent that this verse says is temporary? What would change if you believed that this week?
• God names death, mourning, crying, and pain one by one — he doesn't minimize them. Do you let yourself feel your grief honestly, or do you rush to fake peace?
• If Jesus already paid for every tear to be wiped away, what fear are you still living under that his empty tomb makes unnecessary?
