III John 1:11

Look at what John does here — he's writing to his friend Gaius, and he's just spent two verses complaining about a church bully named Diotrephes, a man who loves being in charge so much that he refuses to welcome traveling teachers and even kicks out anyone in the church who tries to ( 3 John 1:9-10). Right after describing that ugly behavior, John says: don't copy that. "Beloved" softens it — this isn't a scolding, it's a friend grabbing your arm before you walk into traffic.

The structure is simple and stark: two paths, two doers, two identities. "Do not imitate what is evil, but what is good" — and then John tells you why this matters so much: your actions reveal your origin. The one who does good "is of God." The one who does evil "has not seen God." Notice John doesn't say the evildoer disagrees with God or disobeys God — he says that person hasn't seen him. That's a claim about knowledge, not just behavior. For John, how you act toward people is a window straight into whether you actually know God at all, not just whether you follow rules about him Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

What's easy to miss: this isn't an abstract ethics lesson. John has a specific face in mind — Diotrephes for the evil, and in the very next verse, Demetrius for the good Matthew Henry. John is pointing at real people Gaius knows and saying, "pick which one you want to grow up to look like." That's how imitation works in the ancient world and in ours — you become like whoever you watch closely enough to copy.

This verse sits near the end of the shortest book in the New Testament, a personal letter dealing with a nasty church conflict over hospitality and authority. Christians don't disagree much on the theology here, but it's worth noting how directly John ties seeing God to doing good — some traditions will stress this as evidence of genuine faith (you can tell a true believer by fruit), others will stress it as a warning against false assurance. Either way, the verse refuses to let "knowing God" become a purely private, internal thing.

Third John is a real letter, written to a real person, about a real, awkward, in-your-face church problem — probably around AD 85–95, likely from the apostle John in his old age, writing from or near Ephesus (in modern-day western Turkey) to churches scattered around that region.

Here's the situation: house churches in this period had no buildings, no salaried staff, no denominational headquarters. They met in someone's home, and traveling teachers — missionaries sent out to spread the gospel and support the churches — depended entirely on local believers to feed them, house them, and send them on their way with supplies. Hospitality wasn't a nice gesture; it was the whole infrastructure that kept the gospel moving across the Roman Empire.

Diotrephes, evidently a leader in one of these house churches, had figured out he could consolidate personal power by refusing to receive these traveling teachers sent by John, spreading malicious gossip about John himself, and excommunicating anyone in his congregation who dared to welcome them anyway ( 3 John 1:9-10). This is a man using control over hospitality — over who gets fed and welcomed — as a weapon to build his own little kingdom. Gaius, by contrast, is praised earlier in the letter for doing exactly the opposite: opening his home generously to these same traveling strangers ( 3 John 1:5-8).

So when John writes verse 11, he's not settling an abstract debate. He's writing to reassure and steady a good man, Gaius, who's watching a local power-grab happen right in front of him and might be tempted to wonder if that's just how church leadership works now — or might be tempted to retaliate in kind. John's answer is blunt: don't let Diotrephes' example become your model. The letter closes shortly after this ( 3 John 1:13-14) with John saying he hopes to visit soon and settle things face to face — a reminder that this whole book is one real friend writing to another in the middle of a real, tense, unresolved church fight.

The verb John chooses for "imitate" is μιμέομαι (miméomai, G3401) — it's where we get our English word "mimic" Strong's. This isn't "don't do evil things" in some generic sense; it's "don't pattern your life after this person's example." John is thinking visually — like a child copying a parent's walk, or an apprentice copying a craftsman's hands.

Then there's a contrast worth noticing: κακός (kakós, G2556) and ἀγαθός (agathós, G18). Greek actually has more than one word for "bad" — kakós describes something worthless or defective at its core, in contrast to another word (pónēros) that stresses actively harmful effects Strong's. So John's not just warning against causing damage; he's warning against a kind of life that's rotten in its foundation, regardless of how polished it looks on the surface. Against that stands agathós — "good" in the fullest, most wholesome sense, the kind of good that's beneficial all the way through.

The verbs for "doing" good and evil — ἀγαθοποιέω (agathopoiéō, G15) and κακοποιέω (kakopoiéō, G2554) — both build on the idea of active practice, not a one-time act Strong's. This is lifestyle language, habitual doing, the kind of pattern that shapes who you become.

Last, look closely at ὁράω (horáō, G3708) — "to see," but with the sense of staring at something until you truly perceive it, discern it clearly Strong's. John says the evildoer "has not seen [horáō] God" — not merely disobeyed him, but never actually perceived him at all. And "is of" translates ἐκ (ek, G1537), a preposition of origin — out of, sourced from Strong's. The good-doer's life flows out of God as its source, the way water flows from a spring.

John's whole letter assumes something the rest of the New Testament makes explicit: nobody has literally seen God the Father — but Jesus makes him visible. "No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is at the Father's side, He has made Him known" ( John 1:18). So when John says the one who does evil "has not seen God," he's not talking about eyesight — he's talking about the kind of seeing that happens when you watch Jesus. Jesus told Philip directly, "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father" ( John 14:9). If you want to know what God actually looks like in action — his mercy, his patience with the outsider, his refusal to grab power the way Diotrephes did — you look at Jesus.

That's why Paul, writing to another church, uses the exact same imitation language John does here: "Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children" ( Ephesians 5:1) — and immediately roots that imitation in Christ's self-giving love. The command to "imitate what is good" isn't imitation of a rule; it's imitation of a Person. Jesus is the good John is pointing Gaius toward without naming him — the one who, unlike Diotrephes, "did not come to be served, but to serve" ( Mark 10:45), who washed feet instead of demanding thrones.

And notice the deeper claim underneath John's words: doing good is evidence you're "of God" — born of him, sharing his nature. That's exactly what Jesus said would mark his true followers: "My sheep listen to My voice... and they follow Me" ( John 10:27). The fruit of a life doesn't create the relationship with God, but it does reveal it. Diotrephes could talk a good game about Christ while acting nothing like him — and John says that gap between profession and pattern is precisely how you know someone hasn't truly seen God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: whose example are you actually copying right now? Not who do you say you follow — whose patterns of speech, whose way of handling conflict, whose instincts for self-protection have you quietly absorbed because you spend time watching them?

We like to think our character develops from our beliefs. John says it's often the reverse — you become what you imitate, and then your beliefs catch up to explain your behavior. Diotrephes probably had a doctrinal statement that sounded fine. He still built a kingdom out of exclusion and gossip Tyndale. That should terrify you a little, because it means orthodoxy on paper is not the same thing as having actually seen God.

So don't let this verse stay abstract. Think of one person in your life right now whose way of operating — in a marriage, at work, in church — you've started mimicking without really deciding to, because it gets results or protects you from getting hurt. Maybe it's someone who wins arguments by cutting people down. Maybe it's someone who withholds warmth to control others. John's word is blunt: stop copying that, whatever fruit it produces. And then find someone whose goodness costs them something — who forgives when it isn't owed, who welcomes the inconvenient person, who gives without keeping score — and imitate that, even when it's slower and less impressive.

The cost here isn't abstract either. It might mean losing an advantage Diotrephes-style behavior would have gotten you. It might mean being the Gaius in your situation — welcoming the person your community has decided to freeze out, even if it costs you standing. That's the price of actually having seen God, rather than just talking about him.

• Lord, show me honestly whose example I've been copying without meaning to — expose the patterns I've absorbed that don't come from you.
• Give me eyes to truly see you in the face of Jesus, not just a mental checklist of correct beliefs about you.
• Where I've imitated evil to protect myself or win, I confess it — teach me to imitate goodness even when it costs me.
• Make me a Gaius, not a Diotrephes — generous, welcoming, unthreatened by sharing influence or credit.
• Let my daily habits — the small, repeated choices — actually be evidence that I belong to you.

• Name one person whose behavior you've quietly started copying. Is it good, or just effective?
• Where in your life does your public profession of faith outrun what your actual habits reveal about you?
• Have you ever used control over something (money, hospitality, information, access) the way Diotrephes used hospitality — to build power over people?
• If someone watched your last hard conversation, would they say you looked like Jesus in it?
• What would it cost you this week to welcome someone your circle has decided to shut out?
