II John 1:8

Picture John, an old shepherd, leaning close and putting his hand on your shoulder: "Watch yourselves." That first word is a spiritual sentry's word — stay awake, keep your eyes open. He's just warned about deceivers who deny that Jesus really came in the flesh (verse 7), and now he tells you what's at stake if you drift after them.

Here's the thing that's easy to miss. He doesn't say "watch yourselves so you don't lose your soul." He says don't lose "what we have worked for." John and his fellow teachers have poured years into these believers — preaching, correcting, encouraging. The danger is that all that pastoral sweat could be wasted if these people wander off into false teaching Tyndale. It's not mainly about whether your name is written in heaven; it's about the fruit of a ministry, and the "full reward" you and your teachers stand to receive together — or lose together.

There's a famous wrinkle here. The oldest manuscripts split: some say "that we lose not... that we receive," others say "that ye lose not... that ye receive" Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. The BSB blends them — "you do not lose what we worked for." Either way the meaning holds: the teacher's labor and the student's faith are bound together, and both share in the reward or the loss.

Where do Christians disagree? On whether this "loss" means a true believer can lose salvation itself, or only lose rewards while still being saved. Some read it as a real warning that persevering is required Adam Clarke; others say it's about losing the fruit and reward of the work, not eternal life itself. Read plainly, John's stress is on finishing well — don't let anyone rob you of what grace has built in you.

This little postcard of a letter — just thirteen verses — comes from the apostle John near the end of the first century, roughly AD 85–95, most likely from Ephesus, a bustling port city on the coast of what's now Turkey. By now John is an old man, probably the last living apostle, and he writes to "the elect lady and her children" — which might be an actual Christian woman and her family, or a poetic nickname for a whole local church and its members.

The threat in the streets isn't Roman soldiers here — it's traveling teachers. In that world, wandering preachers moved from house to house, and hospitality was sacred; you'd take a guest in, feed him, fund his journey to the next town. But some of these traveling teachers were spreading a poison: they claimed Jesus hadn't truly come in a real human body — that the divine Christ only seemed to have flesh. To them, pure spirit was good and messy physical matter was beneath God, so a genuinely fleshly Savior was unthinkable.

John sees this for what it is: a lie that guts the gospel. If Jesus didn't really take on flesh, he didn't really die, and he didn't really rise. So John's warning — "watch yourselves" — is deeply practical. Don't let these smooth-talking guests into your home and onto your platform (verses 10–11). Guard the faith you were handed Tyndale.

It's the same alarm Jesus himself raised: "See to it that you are not deceived. For many will come in My name" ( Luke 21:8). John, who had stood on that hillside and heard those words, is now passing the watch to the next generation before he dies.

The verse opens with βλέπω (blépō, G991), plainly "to look at" — but here it's the look of a lookout on a wall Strong's. Not a glance; a watch. And what you're to keep your eyes on is ἑαυτοῦ (heautoû, G1438) — yourselves Strong's. The danger isn't only "out there" in the deceivers; it's the drift in your own heart.

The word for what you might lose is ἀπόλλυμι (apóllymi, G622) — "to destroy fully, to perish, or lose" Strong's. It's a heavy word, the same family Jesus uses for the lost sheep and the lost coin. Something precious slipping through your fingers.

And what's precious? What "we have worked for" — ἐργάζομαι (ergázomai, G2038), to toil at a task, the sweat of a real job Strong's. Ministry is labor, and John doesn't want the labor wasted.

Then the payoff: μισθός (misthós, G3408), pay for service — a workman's wages Strong's. Not a lucky bonus; earned pay. And it's to be πλήρης (plḗrēs, G4134) — full, complete, filled to the brim Strong's, received in full through ἀπολαμβάνω (apolambánō, G618), "to receive in full." Put it together: God pays wages, and he means to pay them completely — but only to those who don't quit the field before harvest.

The whole crisis behind this verse is a lie about Jesus' body — that he never truly took on flesh. So the deepest anchor against losing your reward is holding tight to the real Jesus: God who genuinely became a man, ate fish, wept real tears, bled real blood, and rose in a body you could touch. Everything John is guarding here is guarding him.

Notice how this idea of reward for labor that isn't wasted runs straight to Jesus' own words. He told his disciples, "Already the reaper draws his wages and gathers a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together" ( John 4:36). That's exactly John's hope — that teacher and student, sower and reaper, will rejoice together in the same harvest. John doesn't want to stand before Christ and watch his crop rot in the field.

And here's the tender part: the reward is real, but it's never earned in the way a hired hand earns Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Jesus makes the same promise in almost the same breath as this letter: "I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have, so that no one will take your crown" ( Revelation 3:11). There's a crown with your name on it. Someone would love to snatch it. Jesus — the one who really came in the flesh, really died, really rose — is the reason you can hold on, and he is the reward you're holding for.

Here's what stings about this verse: it's possible to have come a long way — years of showing up, believing, serving, suffering a little for Jesus — and then to let it slip away near the finish line. John isn't worried about people who never started. He's worried about people who started well and might not end well. "Watch yourselves" is a word for the committed, not the curious.

So ask yourself honestly: what would it look like for you to lose what's already been worked for in you? Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to abandon Christ. It happens the way erosion happens — a teaching you stop testing, a compromise you stop noticing, a slow trade of the flesh-and-blood Jesus for a more comfortable, more flattering, more convenient version. And the tragedy in John's mind isn't just yours. Someone poured labor into you — a parent, a pastor, a friend who prayed for you at 2 a.m. Your drift wouldn't only cost you a reward; it would waste their toil too thegospelcoalition.org. You are not an island. Your endurance is a gift you owe to the people who fought for your soul.

The cost this verse asks is vigilance — and vigilance is unglamorous. It means testing what you're being fed, even when it comes from a charming teacher. It means staying awake when drifting would be easier. It means you don't get to coast on a decision you made years ago. Grace saved you; grace also keeps you — and one of the ways grace keeps you is by making you the kind of person who stays on watch. Don't sleep through the last mile.

• Jesus, you said you are coming soon — help me hold fast, so no one takes the crown you've promised.
