I John 5:16

Look at what John actually says. If you catch your brother — a fellow Christian — in a sin that isn't the deadly kind, you don't just shake your head. You pray, and John promises God will give that person life. That's stunning: your prayer becomes a channel for someone else's spiritual rescue. Then John slows down and adds a strange, almost reluctant qualification: there's a sin that leads to death, and about that one, "I am not saying he should ask." Notice he doesn't forbid you to pray. He just refuses to command it. He backs off, gently.

The huge question — and honest Christians have wrestled with it for centuries — is what is this "sin leading to death"? Three main answers. Some say it's physical death, like God cutting a life short (think of the harsh warnings in 1 Samuel 2:25). Others say it points back to Jesus' words about the one unforgivable sin, "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" ( Luke 12:10). The reading most teachers now find most likely: the sin leading to death is a settled, willful walking away from Christ altogether — not one bad act but a hardened refusal, someone who has been given over so deeply that real sorrow and turning back have become impossible desiringgod.org. This sits at the end of John's whole letter, where he's been building confidence: you can know you have life, you can know your prayers are heard (5:13–15). Verse 16 turns that confidence outward — toward the brother who's stumbling.

This letter comes from the apostle John, most likely in the 80s or 90s AD, writing to churches he loved — probably clustered around Ephesus, on the coast of what's now western Turkey. By now John is an old man, maybe the last living apostle, and he's watching his spiritual children get pulled in two directions.

The trouble in the streets wasn't Roman soldiers here; it was a split inside the church. A group had broken away (John describes them in 1 John 2:19 as people who "went out from us"). These were teachers spreading an early version of what would later be called Gnostic thinking — the idea that Jesus wasn't really and fully human, that the physical world was beneath God, and that "the enlightened" were beyond ordinary moral concern. They'd left the fellowship, denied that Christ came in real flesh, and were trying to draw others out after them.

That's the backdrop that makes verse 16 click. When John speaks of a "sin leading to death," his readers weren't thinking about an abstract puzzle — they were thinking about specific people they used to worship beside, who had now publicly renounced Christ and joined the breakaway movement Tyndale. So John's caution isn't cold. He's a pastor telling a grieving congregation: keep praying hard for the brother who slips and grieves over it; but for the one who has deliberately, defiantly walked out and slammed the door on Christ, I won't command you to demand his restoration — that lies in God's hands, not yours. The whole letter pulses with this pastoral warmth: John wants his people sure of their standing, and confident that their prayers for one another genuinely move the hand of God.

The verb for "sees" is εἴδω (eídō, G1492) — properly to see, but by implication to know Strong's. John isn't talking about idle gossip; he means you actually perceive a brother caught in something.

"Sin" here comes from ἁμαρτάνω (hamartánō, G264), a word whose picture is missing the mark — an arrow falling short of the target, "not sharing in the prize" Strong's. Sin isn't first a list of rule-breaks; it's aiming your whole life at God and falling short. The related noun ἁμαρτία (hamartía, G266) is sin in the abstract.

Two more carry real weight. θάνατος (thánatos, G2288) — death, literal or figurative Strong's. And set against it, ζωή (zōḗ, G2222), life, the very thing John's whole letter is about (5:13, "that you may know you have eternal life").

Then there's the word for prayer. When John says the brother should "ask," he uses αἰτέω (aitéō, G154), which means to ask as a lesser asks a greater — the humble request of someone coming with empty hands, not a demand from an equal Strong's. That nuance matters: for the sin unto death, John won't have you march up to God demanding someone's pardon, as if you were more merciful than God himself. Even our boldest intercession stays a petition, never a command.

The whole engine that makes this verse work is Jesus, and John has already told you so. Just two verses earlier he's been talking about the confidence you have to bring anything before God (5:14–15). Where does that confidence come from? Back in chapter 2 John names it plainly: "if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One" ( 1 John 2:1). When you pray for your stumbling brother and God "gives life," it's because Jesus already stood in the gap.

Look at the pattern running under this verse. Moses standing "in the breach" to keep God from destroying a rebellious people ( Psalm 106:23). Abraham praying, and God healing Abimelech's whole household ( Genesis 20:17). Over and over, God lets one person's prayer become the lifeline for another. Every one of those is a small shadow of the real Intercessor. In John 17:9 Jesus prays, "I ask on their behalf... for those you have given me" — the great High Priest making the request your small prayers echo.

So when John tells you to pray for a sinning brother and promises life, he isn't handing you a magic technique. He's inviting you into Jesus' own work. The life you ask God to give is the life Christ purchased and now pleads for. Your intercession is real — it genuinely moves things Jamieson-Fausset-Brown — but it moves things only because it rides on the intercession of the One who already died and rose to make that brother alive. You pray small; Jesus prays sure.

Here's the uncomfortable, beautiful weight of this verse: God has tied a brother's spiritual life, in part, to your prayers. That's not a burden to make you anxious; it's a dignity most of us are too lazy to take up. Be honest — when you see a fellow believer sliding into something, what's your first move? Usually it's to talk about them. To someone else. With a sigh and a raised eyebrow. John says: no. Your first move is to go to God for them, and to expect him to act.

That costs you something specific. It costs your right to the comfortable distance of criticism. It's easy to diagnose a brother from across the room. It's hard to carry him into the throne room on your knees, night after night, expecting nothing in return but his rescue. The old commentators noticed something you should sit with: John says ask, humbly — not demand Strong's. So praying for your brother will also expose your pride. You'll want to fix him, manage him, feel superior to him. Real intercession strips that away, because you're begging for the same mercy you need yourself.

And don't let the "sin unto death" clause scare you into paralysis. If you're worried you've committed the unforgivable sin, that very worry is evidence you haven't — the hardened person John describes has stopped caring, stopped grieving, stopped confessing desiringgod.org. The tender heart is the safe heart. So take the verse the way John meant it: as an invitation. Pick one struggling brother or sister this week. Stop talking about them. Start pleading for them. And believe God gives life.

• Bring one struggling brother or sister to my mind right now, and teach me to carry them to you instead of talking about them to others.
• Guard me from the pride that wants to fix and judge; make my prayers for others humble requests, not demands.
• Where my own heart has grown cold or careless about sin, soften it — keep me tender, keeping and confessing, never hardened.
• Thank you, Lord Jesus, that you are my Advocate; let my small prayers ride on your sure intercession.

• Is there a person I've quietly written off as "too far gone" that God is actually calling me to intercede for?
• Do I really believe my prayers for another person move the hand of God? If not, why do I bother praying at all?
• The fear of unforgivable sin often haunts tender hearts. What does it tell me about God that the very worry proves I still belong to him?
• Where do I secretly enjoy feeling more merciful, or more righteous, than the brother I'm "praying" about?
