I John 4:20

John does something bracing here: he calls the pious fraud a liar. Look at the sentence. Someone stands up and announces, "I love God" — and that same person can't stand his brother, actively hates him. John doesn't say this person is confused, or immature, or working on it. He says the words coming out of his mouth are false. The Greek word for "liar" is blunt — a falsifier, a counterfeiter Strong's.

Then comes his reasoning, and it's a piece of common sense sharpened to a point. If you can't love the person standing right in front of you — the one with a face, a voice, needs you can actually see and touch — how could you possibly love the God you've never seen? John flips the way we usually think. We assume loving God (the invisible, the spiritual) is the hard part, and loving cranky people is the easy warm-up. John says it's the reverse. The brother you can see is God's test case, the visible proof of whether the invisible love is real Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Notice where this sits: John has been circling this theme the whole letter. Back in 1 John 2:9 he already said the man who claims the light but hates his brother is "still in the darkness," and in 1 John 3:17 he made it concrete — if you have money and see your brother in need and shut off your compassion, God's love isn't living in you. This verse is the hammer coming down on that anvil.

There's little denominational fight here. Everyone agrees John means what he says. The only real question readers raise is who counts as "brother" — fellow believer, or every neighbor? John's primary aim is the family of faith, but the logic spills outward: love that can't hold the person nearest you is no love at all.

This letter comes from near the end of the first century — most likely the 80s or 90s AD — written by John, the disciple who had leaned on Jesus at the last supper, now an old man writing to churches he loved, probably around Ephesus in what's now western Turkey.

Something had gone wrong in those churches. A group had broken away (John mentions them in 1 John 2:19 — "they went out from us"). These people had a high opinion of their own spiritual knowledge. They talked a big game about knowing God, being in the light, walking in fellowship with the divine. But their behavior didn't match. They looked down on ordinary believers, and some of them seem to have denied that Jesus really came in the flesh — that the eternal God actually took on a human body you could touch.

That's why John keeps hammering the visible and the tangible. His opponents wanted a religion that floated above the messy physical world — spiritual highs without dirty hands. John's whole letter drags love back down to earth: to shared bread, open wallets, and getting along with the annoying brother in the next pew. If your God is too spiritual to bother with the person beside you, John says, you've invented a god, not found the real one.

There's also a sharp edge some early readers heard here. This kind of talk — claiming great love for God while despising a whole class of people — was a temptation John had seen up close Adam Clarke. Peter himself had to be shaken by a vision before he'd sit at a Gentile's table ( Acts 10). The pull to love God in the abstract while writing off actual human beings is very old, and very human.

Two words carry the weight of this verse, and they sit right next to each other like opposites in a boxing ring.

The first is ἀγαπάω (agapáō, G25) — to love in the deep moral and social sense, the settled, self-giving love God shows us Strong's. This isn't a feeling that comes and goes; it's the kind of love that does something, that shows up.

Its enemy in this verse is μισέω (miséō, G3404) — to detest, to persecute, and by extension "to love less" Strong's. That last shade matters. John isn't only talking about the person who slams doors and seethes with rage. "To love less" catches the quieter version — the brother you simply can't be bothered with, the one you've decided isn't worth your effort. For John there's no neutral middle. You're either loving your brother or, in his stark accounting, hating him.

Then there's the verdict: ψεύστης (pseústēs, G5583) — a falsifier, from the verb "to lie" Strong's. Not someone who made an honest mistake, but someone whose whole claim is a forgery.

And ἀδελφός (adelphós, G80) — brother, "literally or figuratively, near or remote" Strong's. The word insists on family. These aren't strangers you're free to feel neutral about; they're kin, and love within a family isn't optional. The one you can see — that's the recurring drumbeat of the verse — is the flesh-and-blood proof of the love you claim to have for the One you can't.

John's argument only lands because of one enormous fact: God, the invisible One, made himself visible. Just eight verses earlier John admits "No one has ever seen God" ( 1 John 4:12). And then the whole letter's answer rings out — the God nobody could see stepped into a body you could touch. John opens this very letter by insisting he heard him with his own ears, saw him with his own eyes, touched him with his own hands ( 1 John 1:1). That's Jesus.

So when John says you can't love the God you haven't seen if you won't love the brother you have, he's standing on something Jesus already taught. Remember what Jesus said the final judgment would sound like: "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me" ( Matthew 25:40). The invisible God and the visible neighbor are not rivals for your love — they're wired together. Jesus is the wire.

And here's the mercy in it. John isn't just laying down a law you'll fail. Three verses up he tells you where the love comes from: "We love because He first loved us" ( 1 John 4:19). You don't manufacture love for your brother by gritting your teeth. You receive it. Christ pours his own love into you, and it overflows toward the very people who are hardest to love — because that's exactly what he did for you when you were unlovable.

The true picture of what a human being should be is finally visible in Jesus — God shown as he is, and man as he was always meant to be Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Love him, and you learn to see your brother the way he does.

Here's the uncomfortable gift of this verse: it won't let you hide.

You can feel wonderfully close to God on a quiet morning with your coffee and your Bible — no one contradicting you, no one's dishes in the sink, no one who wronged you five years ago sitting in the room. It's easy to love a God who never interrupts you. And John, gently and ruthlessly, says: that proves nothing yet.

The test isn't the mountaintop feeling. The test is the person you can see. Your spouse across the dinner table. The relative whose politics make your blood pressure spike. The person at church you've quietly written off. John warns us that "hate" isn't only the loud, dramatic kind — it hides in "loving less," in cold shoulders and convenient distance Strong's. The brother you simply can't be bothered to forgive is the measure of how much you actually love God.

So let this verse put a name to someone specific. Who is it? Don't rush past that question. There's a face. Your feelings about God are, right now, no more real than your love for that face.

The cost here is concrete and it will sting: you have to go toward the person you'd rather avoid. Make the call. Absorb the offense instead of nursing it. Open your wallet where you'd rather look away ( 1 John 3:17). Stop letting "I love God" be a phrase that lets you off the hook for loving people.

And take heart — you're not squeezing love out of a dry stone. You love because he loved you first ( 1 John 4:19). Go stand in that love until it spills onto the one you've been avoiding.

• Where I am holding a grudge or shutting off my compassion, break my heart and move my feet toward them this week.
