II Peter 3:9

Peter is answering a taunt. Back in verse 4, scoffers were saying "where is this 'coming' he promised?"—basically, "Jesus said he'd return, it's been years, nothing's happened, so either he lied or he can't." Peter's answer isn't "actually, it's coming sooner than you think." His answer is: you're measuring God with the wrong clock.

"The Lord is not slow" — that word "slow" (we'll look at it closely below) means late, behind schedule, missing a deadline. Peter flatly denies it. God hasn't missed anything. Then comes the turn: what looks like slowness to you is actually patience toward you. Notice the target — not patience "toward the elect in the abstract" but patience toward the very people reading this letter, maybe even toward the scoffers themselves Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. God is holding the door open.

Then the last line is the gut-punch: "not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance." This is one of the most debated lines in the New Testament. Calvinists read "everyone/anyone" as everyone among God's elect people — the "you" and "us" Peter is writing to, not literally every human who ever lived. Arminians and many others read it as God's genuine desire for the salvation of every single person, which is not automatically fulfilled because it's contingent on repentance. Both camps agree on the main point Peter is making here: delay is not indifference, it's mercy Matthew Henry. This verse sits right in the middle of Peter's argument that the delay of Christ's return is proof of God's character, not a crack in his promise — the created world's clock isn't God's clock (v. 8), and the same patience that seems like slowness will one day give way to the sudden fire of judgment (v. 10).

Second Peter is likely one of the last letters in the New Testament, written somewhere around AD 65–68, probably from Rome, not long before Peter's execution under Nero. He knows he's dying soon ( 2 Peter 1:14) and is writing what amounts to a final word to churches scattered across Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) who are being infiltrated by false teachers.

These teachers weren't denying Jesus outright — they were doing something subtler. They mocked the idea that Jesus was actually coming back to judge the world. Their argument, quoted in verse 4, was basically: "Everything has gone on exactly as it always has since our ancestors died — where's this coming he promised?" A whole generation of the first Christians had died waiting. To these scoffers, that silence was proof God either never meant it or had given up. And if there's no coming judgment, there's no reason to live carefully — which is exactly the license these false teachers wanted, since Peter accuses them elsewhere of greed and sexual immorality dressed up as freedom.

Peter is writing to ordinary believers who are watching respected voices in their community openly ridicule the hope they were taught to hold onto. It's a slow erosion — not persecution from outside, but doubt seeded from inside. Peter's response draws straight from Israel's own scriptures: the God of Exodus 34:6, who described himself to Moses as "slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion," and the God of Habakkuk 2:3, who told a prophet waiting for a vision to fulfill itself, "though it lingers, wait for it, it will not delay." Peter isn't inventing a new idea about God's patience — he's reminding jittery Christians of the oldest thing they know about him.

The word translated "slow" is βραδύνω (bradýnō, G1019), meaning "to delay" Strong's — it's the ordinary word for someone missing an appointment, showing up late. Peter pairs it with the noun form, βραδύτης (bradýtēs, G1022), "tardiness" Strong's — "as some understand slowness." He's naming the exact accusation being made against God and rejecting it in the same breath.

Against that, he sets μακροθυμέω (makrothyméō, G3114), "to be long-spirited" — literally, long-tempered, the opposite of short-tempered Strong's. This is the word usually translated "patient" or "longsuffering" throughout the New Testament, and it's a relational word, not a scheduling word. It describes someone who could act now, has every right to act now, and chooses to hold back for the sake of another person. That's the whole argument in one Greek verb: this isn't God being late, it's God restraining himself on purpose.

Then there's βούλομαι (boúlomai, G1014), "to will, to be willing" Strong's — Peter uses it twice, in "not wanting anyone to perish" and implied in "wanting... everyone to come to repentance." It's a word about desire and disposition, not a legal decree. And the negation matters: he uses μή (mḗ, G3361), a "qualified" negative that goes with a wish or intention, rather than οὐ (ou, G3756), the flat, absolute "no" used earlier for "not slow" Strong's. God's non-slowness is stated as hard fact; his not wanting anyone to perish is stated as the shape of his heart and will. Small grammatical choice, big theological weight.

This verse is really about the gap between two comings of Jesus — the first one, already accomplished at the cross, and the second one, still ahead, when he returns to judge and to make all things new. The patience Peter describes isn't abstract; it's Jesus himself holding back his own return. Every day that passes without the sky splitting open is a day Jesus is choosing to give you.

Paul says almost the same thing in Romans 2:4 — God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance, not license. And 1 Timothy 2:4 grounds it further: God wants everyone to be saved and to come to know the truth. That desire took on flesh and blood. The cross is proof that God's unwillingness for anyone to perish isn't a passive wish — it cost him his own Son. If Jesus hadn't already died and risen, this "patience" would just be delay of the inevitable. Because he has already dealt with sin, the patience makes sense: there's now somewhere for repentant sinners to actually go. The door Peter says is being held open leads somewhere — to a person, a table, a family, not just to more time.

Peter, remarkably, applies this to himself. In 1 Timothy 1:16, Paul says he was shown mercy as "the worst of sinners" so that Christ could display his perfect patience as an example to everyone who would believe. Peter — who denied Jesus three times to his face and was restored anyway — knew exactly what it felt like to be the "anyone" Jesus wasn't willing to let perish. When he writes this verse, he's not speculating. He's remembering a charcoal fire and a question — "do you love me?" — asked three times by a Lord who was, at that very moment, being patient with him.

Here's the question this verse actually puts to you: what have you decided God's silence means?

Maybe it's a prayer that's gone unanswered for years. Maybe it's a promise in scripture you've stopped believing applies to you. Maybe it's the world itself — the way evil seems to keep winning, keep going unpunished, and you've quietly started to wonder if anyone's really steering this thing. Peter's readers looked at the delay and concluded God was either powerless or indifferent. That's the oldest trick doubt plays: it takes God's restraint and renames it absence.

But flip it around and ask what this verse is asking of you specifically. If God is patient because he doesn't want anyone to perish, that includes people you've written off — the relative who mocks your faith, the friend who's walked away, the version of yourself ten years ago you're ashamed of. Are you as patient with them as God has been with you? Or have you already decided their case is closed, their time is up, they've had their chance?

And there's a harder edge here too. This patience is not a permanent condition — the very next verses talk about fire and judgment finally arriving. Grace with an expiration date is still grace, but it's not grace forever. The cost this verse asks of you is to stop treating God's patience as evidence he's forgotten, and start treating it as the only reason you're still standing here with time to actually repent of something. Don't waste the delay.
