I Peter 3:15

Look at the order Peter gives you, because it's everything. Before a single word about answering anyone, he says: "in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord." "Sanctify" means to set apart as holy — to enshrine Jesus in the center of your inner life, to treat him as the holiest thing you've got Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. That's the foundation. Only then comes the famous part: be always ready to give "a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you."

Here's what's easy to miss. Peter doesn't say people will ask about your arguments — he says they'll ask about your hope. The whole flow of this letter is about Christians suffering unjustly and not lashing back (verse 9). When you absorb wrongs without returning evil, and you're still somehow steady and even joyful, people get curious. Your calm under pressure becomes the question they can't answer, and you become the one holding the answer.

Notice too that "defense" isn't a courtroom lecture. It's a reasonable, personal account of how this hope got into you and what it rests on Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. And Peter immediately fences it in: "everyone who asks you" — this is responsive, not pushy. You're not cornering people; you're ready for the honest questioner.

Then the kicker: "with gentleness and respect." The manner isn't optional decoration. The same gentleness Peter praised in a godly wife back in verse 4 is what he demands here. God's cause doesn't need your hot temper to defend it Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. This verse sits in the heart of Peter's teaching ( 1 Peter 3:8–17) on how to suffer well — by blessing instead of cursing, and by being ready to explain the strange hope that makes such blessing possible.

Peter is writing, probably in the early-to-mid 60s AD, to scattered Christians across what's now Turkey — "exiles," he calls them, people who felt like strangers in their own towns. These weren't believers facing organized, empire-wide execution yet. They were facing something more ordinary and grinding: suspicion from neighbors, slander, social freeze-out. They'd stopped going to the old temple festivals, stopped the drinking parties, stopped honoring the household gods — and that made them look weird, antisocial, maybe even dangerous.

Picture it on the street level. A slave who won't curse the master who beats her unjustly. A wife whose husband isn't a believer, who wins him over not by arguing but by her quiet, pure conduct ( 1 Peter 3:1–2). A workman who takes an insult and blesses in return. In a world where honor and payback ran everything, this behavior was genuinely bewildering. People wanted to know why.

That's the world this verse answers. Peter isn't handing persecuted Christians a debate manual. He's telling them: the life you're living — refusing revenge, staying gentle while you're mistreated — can only be explained by a hope that doesn't come from this world thegospelcoalition.org. Your endurance becomes a question mark over people's heads, and you'd better be ready when they ask.

There's a courtroom flavor here too. The word for "defense" was used for the reasoned reply a person gave when accused and standing trial. Many of these believers really would be hauled before magistrates and asked to account for themselves. Psalm 119:46 captures the posture Peter wants: "I will speak of Your testimonies before kings, and I will not be ashamed."

The hinge word is ἁγιάζω (hagiázō, G37) — "to make holy, consecrate, venerate" Strong's. It's the same root behind "holy" (hágios), and it's the verb in the Lord's Prayer: "hallowed be your name." Peter is telling you to hallow Christ inside yourself — give him the throne room of your inner life.

And where does this happen? ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν — "in your hearts." The καρδία (kardía, G2588) isn't just feelings; it's "the thoughts or feelings (mind)," the whole control-center of a person Strong's. This isn't a public performance first — it's an inside job.

Who do you enthrone? κύριος (kýrios, G2962) — "supreme in authority, Master" Strong's. Notice Peter applies this title of total sovereignty to Christ. The oldest manuscripts read "sanctify Christ as Lord" — Jesus is the holy One you crown inside.

Then ἕτοιμος (hétoimos, G2092), "adjusted, ready" — like something fitted and prepared for use Strong's — paired with ἀεί (aeí, G104), "ever, continually" Strong's. Always fitted out, on call.

And the loaded one: ἀπολογία (apología, G627), "a plea, a defense" Strong's. It's where we get the word "apologetics." But it doesn't mean saying sorry, and it doesn't mean a scholarly lecture — it's the honest, reasoned account you give when someone asks why you live the way you do.

Keep reading just three verses and you'll see why Peter can command this. In 1 Peter 3:18 he grounds the whole thing: "Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God." That's the hope. That's what's inside you.

See the shape of it. Peter is telling suffering people to absorb injustice without revenge — and then he points to the One who absorbed the ultimate injustice without revenge. Jesus, the only truly innocent man, took the wrongs of the guilty all the way to a cross and did not strike back. When Peter tells you to answer "with gentleness and respect," he's describing the Lamb who "when He was reviled, did not revile in return" ( 1 Peter 2:23). The gentleness you're asked for is simply Jesus-shaped.

And notice who Peter puts on the throne of your heart. He takes kýrios — "Lord," the word that carries total, supreme authority — and he pins it on Christ Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. The carpenter they crucified is the holy Master you enshrine.

This is why the hope is unkillable. It isn't optimism; it's a person who already walked through death and came out the far side. That's the "hope of glory" Paul names — "Christ in you, the hope of glory" ( Colossians 1:27). When a hostile neighbor asks why you didn't retaliate, why you're still steady, the true answer isn't a clever argument. It's a name. The hope in you is the risen Christ, and the best defense you can give is to point past yourself to him.

Notice what Peter does not say. He doesn't say, "Memorize these five arguments." He doesn't start with your brain; he starts with your heart — and he starts with worship. Before you're ready to answer anyone, Christ has to actually be Lord inside you, enthroned in the one room you don't let anyone else see desiringgod.org. If he isn't holy to you in private, no argument you make in public will carry any weight thegospelcoalition.org.

So here's the uncomfortable question: do people ever actually ask you about your hope? Because Peter assumes they will — and the reason they'll ask is that you'll be living a life that can't be explained any other way thegospelcoalition.org. Specifically, a life where you've been wronged and didn't hit back. That's the trigger. If no one ever wonders what's different about you, it may be because, so far, nothing is.

That's the cost this verse names. Not awkward conversations — though those come. The real cost is becoming the kind of person who absorbs an insult, eats an injustice, and stays gentle instead of getting even. That's a crucifixion of your pride, every single time.

And when the question finally comes, Peter nails your tone shut: "with gentleness and respect." You don't get to win the argument and lose the person. No sarcasm, no smug correction, no treating the questioner as an enemy to be beaten thegospelcoalition.org. His cause has never once needed your hot temper to hold it up Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Settle your own heart first. Then be ready. Then be kind.

• Lord Jesus, I set you apart as holy in my heart today — take the throne room I keep hidden from everyone else.
• Make me so quietly hopeful under pressure that people can't help but ask what's different about me.
• When I'm wronged, give me the grace to bless instead of retaliate, the way you did.
• Prepare me to speak of you clearly and simply — not to win, but to point.
• Guard my mouth with gentleness and respect, so I never win an argument and lose a person.

• When was the last time someone actually asked you why you live the way you do? If never — what does that tell you?
• Is Christ genuinely "Lord" in the private, unseen room of your heart, or only in public? Where's the gap?
• Think of the last time you were wronged. Did you absorb it like Jesus, or did you get even? What did your response preach?
• When you talk about your faith with people who disagree, is your tone "gentleness and respect" — or are you secretly trying to win?
• Could you, in plain words, tell a curious friend how your hope arose, what it contains, and what it rests on? Try writing it down.
