Deuteronomy 31:6

Look at where Moses is standing when he says this: he's 120 years old, he's just been told by God that he's going to die without ever setting foot in the Promised Land, and the people he's led for forty years through the wilderness are about to cross the Jordan River without him. That's the scene. And the very first thing out of his mouth to them isn't logistics or law — it's courage.

"Be strong and courageous" is actually two separate Hebrew verbs stacked together — châzaq (H2388), which pictures grabbing hold of something and gripping it tight, and ʼâmats (H553), which carries the sense of being alert, ready, mentally locked in Strong's. This isn't a pep talk about feelings. It's a command to do something with your body and mind even when your gut says run. Then he names the enemy of that courage directly: don't be afraid (yârêʼ, H3372) or terrified (ʻârats, H6206) — the second word has an edge of "don't let this thing harass you, don't let it wear you down" Strong's.

But notice the hinge of the whole verse: "for." Everything before it is a command; everything after it is the reason the command is even possible. God isn't saying "be brave because you're strong." He's saying be brave because He isn't going anywhere. The phrase "never leave you nor forsake you" uses two Hebrew words — râphâh (H7503), to slacken or let go, like a rope going limp in your hand, and ʻâzab (H5800), to abandon or relinquish Strong's. God is promising: my grip on you will not loosen, and I will not walk away and leave you standing there alone.

This verse sits at a hinge point in Deuteronomy itself — Moses handing off leadership to Joshua, the old generation giving way to the new Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. Almost nobody disputes the meaning here; where traditions differ is more downstream — how directly a promise given to a specific army before a specific war applies to your ordinary Tuesday. We'll get there.

Picture roughly 1400 BC, give or take, on the plains of Moab, just east of the Jordan River, staring across at Jericho. The generation that left Egypt is dead — every single adult who stood at Mount Sinai has died in the wilderness, exactly as God said would happen after they refused to enter the land the first time ( Numbers 14). This is their children, a whole new generation that has grown up on manna and tent life, about to do what their parents were too afraid to do.

Moses knows he's dying. God has already told him plainly ( Deuteronomy 31:2) that he won't cross the river. So this speech is his last public address to the nation, delivered as a kind of farewell — and farewell speeches in the ancient world carried enormous weight, because everyone knew the speaker wouldn't get another chance to correct course later Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Whatever Moses says here, he says knowing it has to carry the people for generations without him.

And what's waiting across the Jordan is not an empty field. Canaan was packed with fortified cities, iron-age armies, and peoples like the Amorites and the Anakites — described earlier in Deuteronomy as giants — who had every reason and every ability to crush an invading nation of former slaves. The people had already panicked once before at this exact prospect, forty years earlier, and that panic is what cost them the wilderness years in the first place. So when Moses says "do not be afraid or terrified of them," "them" is not abstract. It's real cities with real walls and real soldiers that this new generation is about to march toward.

Moses immediately turns and repeats almost this exact charge to Joshua by name in front of everyone ( Deuteronomy 31:7-8) — a public transfer of leadership meant to settle any doubt about who speaks for God next Matthew Henry. The nation needed to hear both: God is going with you, the people, and God is going with Joshua, your new leader.

The command itself is a one-two punch: חָזַק (châzaq, H2388) means to seize or fasten onto something — think of white-knuckling a rope in a storm — and by extension, to be strong or resolute. אָמַץ (ʼâmats, H553) means to be alert and firm, mentally squared up and ready to move Strong's. Moses isn't asking for a feeling; he's asking for a posture — grip tight, stand ready.

On the fear side: יָרֵא (yârêʼ, H3372) is the ordinary word for fear, but it's the same word used for "fearing" God reverently elsewhere — which is a clue that fear itself isn't the sin, misplaced fear is. עָרַץ (ʻârats, H6206) goes further, toward dread that harasses you, wears you down over time Strong's.

The name of God here is worth sitting with: יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068), God's personal, covenant name — the "I AM," the self-existing one who bound himself by promise to this specific people Strong's — paired with אֱלֹהִים (ʼĕlôhîym, H430), the majestic word for God the sovereign power over everything. Together: the God who is bound to you by promise is also the God who commands everything.

And then the closing promise rides on two verbs of letting go: רָפָה (râphâh, H7503), to slacken, go limp, drop your hold on something, and עָזַב (ʻâzab, H5800), to relinquish or abandon Strong's. God stacks two different pictures of "giving up on someone" and denies both. Your grip won't slacken. Your friend won't walk out the door. הָלַךְ (hâlak, H1980), "goes with you," reinforces it — not watching from a distance, but walking the road alongside you Strong's.

Notice how this exact promise gets handed forward. God repeats "I will never leave you nor forsake you" to Joshua by name a chapter later ( Joshua 1:5), then David hands the same words to his son Solomon before Solomon builds the Temple ( 1 Chronicles 28:20). It's a promise that keeps getting re-issued to whoever is about to walk into something terrifying carrying God's mission. And then the writer of Hebrews takes this exact phrase — this exact Hebrew promise — and applies it directly to ordinary Christians, not kings, not generals: "God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you'" ( Hebrews 13:5). The promise made to a nation crossing a river gets handed to you.

But here's where it lands hardest: Jesus is the one who was actually, fully, terrifyingly forsaken so that this promise could reach you without exception. On the cross he cried out "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" ( Matthew 27:46) — quoting Psalm 22, taking into himself the one thing Moses promises Israel will never happen to them. The abandonment Israel was spared, Jesus absorbed. That's not a coincidence of language; it's the whole logic of the gospel. He was let go of, so that you never will be.

And just before he ascends, leaving his disciples exactly the way Moses left Israel — about to face something huge without their leader physically present — Jesus says almost the same thing Moses says here: "I am with you always, to the very end of the age" ( Matthew 28:20). Same structure, same promise, now sealed by his own resurrection body walking out of a tomb. Moses could promise God's presence would go with Israel. Jesus doesn't just promise it — he is God's presence, permanently pitched among his people ( John 1:14).

Be honest with yourself for a second: what's your Jordan River right now? What's the thing on the other side of the water that you know you're supposed to walk toward, but every time you look at it your stomach drops? A conversation you're avoiding. A decision you keep circling. A diagnosis. A job. A relationship you know needs to end or needs to be fought for.

Here's what this verse won't let you do: it won't let you wait until the fear goes away before you obey. Moses doesn't tell the people "you'll feel strong when you get there." He commands courage before the crossing, while the fear is still fully present and fully reasonable — those cities really were fortified, those armies really were bigger. The command to be strong isn't a denial of danger. It's a decision to move anyway, gripping something — Someone — tighter than you grip your fear.

And the cost this verse asks of you is specific: it asks you to actually believe, today, that God's presence is a fact you can lean your whole weight on, not a nice sentiment for greeting cards. That's costly because it means you can't use fear as your excuse anymore. If God really isn't leaving, then your hesitation isn't caution — it's unbelief wearing caution's clothes.

So don't rush past the "for." That word is doing all the work. Your courage was never supposed to come from inside you. It comes from who's walking next to you. Look at what's actually true — He hasn't let go, He hasn't walked out — and let that truth pull your feet forward today, into whatever water you've been standing at the edge of.

• Give me the kind of courage that grips tight and moves forward, not the kind that waits for fear to disappear first.
• Thank you that you have never once loosened your grip on me, even when I've felt completely alone.
• Where I've been using fear as an excuse for disobedience, forgive me and give me eyes to see you actually walking beside me.
• Jesus, thank you that you were forsaken so I never will be — let that truth be more real to me than my circumstances today.
