Deuteronomy 29:29

Read this verse slowly and notice its shape: it splits the whole universe into two piles. One pile is "secret things" — belongs to God. The other pile is "things revealed" — belongs to us and our kids, forever, so that we can actually do what he's told us. This is Moses' closing line after a long, hard chapter warning Israel about the curses that will fall if they secretly turn to other gods ( Deuteronomy 29:18-28). He's just described a scary future — future generations asking "why did God burn this land like Sodom?" (29:22-24) — and then he stops and says: some of this you'll never fully understand, and that's okay, because that's not the point. The point is what God did say plainly.

What's easy to miss is the reason clause at the end: "so that we may follow all the words of this law." This isn't a verse about curiosity or unsolved mysteries in general — it's specifically about obedience. Moses isn't handing you a license to stop asking hard questions; he's telling you where to put your energy. You don't need to crack open God's hidden purposes (why did this famine happen, why did that nation fall, what's God doing behind the curtain of history) in order to obey him today. You already have what you need — Deuteronomy itself, the covenant law spoken plainly at Sinai and again here in Moab Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament.

In the shape of the book, this sits right at the hinge between the covenant renewal ceremony (chapters 29-30) and the final blessing/curse choice Moses lays before Israel in chapter 30. Older commentators note that this verse feels almost disconnected from what surrounds it — like Moses pausing mid-speech to answer a question written on the people's faces Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Christians have disagreed mildly on scope: does "secret things" mean God's hidden decrees about the future (Calvinist readings lean here, tied to Romans 11:33), or more narrowly the specific mystery of why Israel would suffer exile even under a good covenant Tyndale? Both readings agree on the main point — God's hiddenness is not neglect, and his revealing is not incomplete.

Picture this: it's near the end of Moses' life, somewhere around 1400 BC (or a bit later, depending on how you date the Exodus), and the people of Israel are camped on the plains of Moab, just east of the Jordan River, staring at the land they're about to enter without him. Moses knows he's going to die before they cross over. So Deuteronomy is essentially his farewell address — not a new law, but the old covenant from Mount Sinai/Horeb re-preached to a new generation, the sons and daughters of the people who died in the wilderness.

Chapter 29 is structured like an ancient treaty renewal ceremony — the kind a king would use to re-bind a vassal nation to loyalty, complete with a recap of past favors, a list of witnesses, and a set of blessings and curses. Moses has just walked through terrifying language: if Israel secretly worships other gods, God's anger will "smoke" against them, and their land will become a byword — other nations passing by and asking, "why did the LORD do this?" (29:24-25) Matthew Henry. This wasn't hypothetical to the original hearers — later readers of this text, living through or after the Babylonian exile in 586 BC when Nebuchadnezzar's army destroyed Jerusalem and hauled the survivors off to Babylon, would have felt this warning land like a punch to the gut. They were living the very scenario Moses described.

Into that unbearable question — why did this happen to us? — Moses drops verse 29 almost like a release valve. He's not going to pretend to explain every hidden purpose of God's providence to a people about to face centuries of ups and downs, conquest, exile, and return. Instead he redirects them to what's plain and available: the covenant law itself, written down, spoken aloud, meant to be taught to their children "forever." This is a pastoral move as much as a theological one — protecting a grieving, anxious, mystified people from despair by grounding them in obedience rather than speculation.

The verb behind "secret things" is סָתַר (çâthar, H5641) — literally "to hide, to cover over" Strong's. It's the same root picture as something tucked behind a curtain, deliberately out of sight. God isn't hiding things by accident or losing track of his own plans — he's the one doing the covering, on purpose.

Contrast that with גָּלָה (gâlâh, H1540) behind "revealed" — which literally means to strip bare, to uncover, to expose Strong's. Interestingly, this same word is used elsewhere for being stripped and marched off into exile (captives literally "uncovered" of their dignity and belongings). There's a haunting irony here: the very word for God's gracious self-disclosure is the same word used for the disgrace of exile. Revelation and exile are both, in Hebrew, forms of "uncovering" — one an act of grace, the other a judgment. Moses may be playing on that overlap without saying so directly.

The name for God used here is the full covenant pairing: יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵינוּ — Yᵉhôvâh (H3068, the self-existent, covenant-keeping "I AM") joined with ʼĕlôhîym (H430, God in the fullest, supreme sense) Strong's. This isn't a distant deity philosophizing about mystery — this is the specific God who bound himself to Israel by covenant, "our God," speaking about his own hidden purposes.

And the word for "law" is תּוֹרָה (tôwrâh, H8451) — not primarily "law" in the cold legal sense, but "instruction," teaching, direction for how to walk Strong's. The whole verse ends aimed at torah — not answers, but a way of life.

This verse draws a line most people never want to draw: some things about God will stay hidden, and you have to be at peace with that. But the whole story of the Bible is God slowly, patiently moving things from the "secret" pile to the "revealed" pile — and Jesus is where that movement reaches its climax. Paul says it plainly: the mystery "hidden for ages and generations" has now been "revealed to his saints" — Christ himself ( Colossians 1:26-27). Jesus tells his disciples something remarkable in Matthew 13:11 — that they've been given knowledge of "the mysteries of the kingdom" that others don't get, and Matthew later frames Jesus' parables as fulfilling exactly this pattern: uttering "things hidden since the foundation of the world" ( Matthew 13:35).

So the same God who told Moses "some things are secret" is the God who, in the fullness of time, sent his Son to unveil what had been veiled. Hebrews 1:1-2 says it directly — God spoke in fragments and shadows through the prophets, but "in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son." Jesus doesn't answer every mystery — when his disciples ask about the timing of the end, he tells them plainly it's "not for you to know times or seasons the Father has fixed by his own authority" ( Acts 1:7), a straight echo of Deuteronomy 29:29's "secret things belong to the LORD." Even Jesus, in his humanity, honored the boundary between what the Father discloses and what he keeps.

But here's the real weight of it: in Christ, you get access to "the mind of Christ" ( 1 Corinthians 2:16) — not exhaustive knowledge, but real, sufficient, life-giving revelation. You don't need to know why God allows what he allows. You need to know the Word made flesh, who has shown you everything necessary for "life and godliness" ( 2 Peter 1:3). The mystery isn't fully solved — it's embodied, and his name is Jesus.

Here's the cost this verse asks of you: stop demanding an explanation before you'll obey. You want to know why God allowed the diagnosis, why the marriage fell apart, why that prayer went unanswered for fifteen years. Moses says: that file is sealed. It belongs to God. What's open on the table in front of you — his revealed will, his commands, his character shown plainly in Scripture — that's yours. Forever. For you and your kids. Not to satisfy your curiosity, but "so that you may follow" it.

This is genuinely hard, because our culture (and honestly, our hearts) treat unanswered questions as an insult, as if God owes us a full accounting before we'll trust him. But think about what Moses is doing here — he's speaking to people who are about to watch generations of covenant faithfulness and covenant failure play out, exile and grief included, and he's not trying to give them a philosophy that explains suffering. He's giving them a life to live: torah, instruction, a way to walk today regardless of what tomorrow holds or explains.

So ask yourself honestly: are you withholding obedience until God answers your "why"? Are you circling the same unresolved question for the tenth year running, using it as an excuse to stay disengaged from the parts of his Word that are crystal clear — forgive that person, tell the truth, give sacrificially, stop that habit? The secret things are not your assignment. The revealed things are. Today, put down the file marked "classified" and pick up the one marked "open." Obey what you already know he's said. That's where intimacy with him actually grows — not in solving mysteries, but in walking with him in the light he's already given you.

• Lord, I confess I've made peace with your Word conditional on you first explaining yourself — forgive me, and help me obey what's plain even when what's hidden stays hidden.
• Father, thank you that you are not distant or careless — you are the God who has bound yourself to me by covenant and revealed yourself in your Son.
• Show me the specific commands in your Word I've been quietly ignoring while I fixate on questions you never promised to answer.
• Give me the humility to say "I don't know why" without losing trust in who you are.
• Thank you for Jesus, in whom your hidden purposes have been unveiled — deepen my hunger for him over my hunger for mere answers.

• What unanswered "why" have you been using as an excuse to stay distant from God, rather than drawing near to him in it?
• Name one clearly revealed command of God that you know but have not obeyed this week. Why not?
• Do you actually believe God's hiddenness is loving, or does it secretly feel like neglect to you? Be honest.
