Deuteronomy 23:5

Look at the shape of this sentence: three times in one verse it says "the LORD your God" — not just "God," but your God, the one bound to you by covenant. That repetition isn't padding. It's the writer hammering home whose initiative this whole story runs on.

Here's the backstory the verse assumes you know: Israel is marching toward the promised land, and the king of Moab, Balak, is terrified. So he hires Balaam, a professional diviner — the ancient world's version of a spiritual hitman for hire — to put a curse on Israel (you can read the wild story in Numbers 22–24). Balaam is willing. He wants the money. He tries, more than once. And every single time he opens his mouth to curse, blessing comes out instead. Numbers 24:9 even has him pronouncing Israel blessed almost against his own will.

Deuteronomy 23:5 is Moses, forty years later, standing before a new generation and explaining why that happened. Not "Balaam had a change of heart." Not "Israel was too strong to curse." The reason given is starkly simple: God would not listen to Balaam, God flipped the curse into blessing, because God loves you John Gill. Three verbs, one cause: love.

This sits inside a section of Deuteronomy (23:1-8) about who gets welcomed into Israel's assembly and who doesn't Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament — Ammonites and Moabites are barred, and this verse about Balaam is the reason given: Moab tried to destroy you at the root, so don't return the favor of hospitality. It's law growing directly out of memory.

There's no major doctrinal fight over this verse itself — it's one of the more unambiguous ones. The real question readers wrestle with is why God loves Israel here — is it something in them, or purely His own choice? The verse itself gives no other reason than "because He loves you." That's worth sitting with.

Moses is speaking somewhere around 1400 BC (give or take, depending on which dating of the Exodus you hold), on the plains of Moab, just east of the Jordan River, right before Israel crosses in to take the land of Canaan. The generation that left Egypt has died in the wilderness; this is their children, hearing the law restated — which is literally what "Deuteronomy" means, the second telling of the law.

The Balaam incident itself happened a few months earlier, and it was a real geopolitical crisis. Israel, fresh off defeating two Amorite kings, was camped on Moab's doorstep with a population large enough to look like an invading army. Balak, king of Moab, didn't have the military strength to fight them, so he did what kings in that world did when swords weren't enough — he hired supernatural firepower. Balaam was a diviner from Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq/Syria region), famous enough that Balak sent messengers a long distance with money in hand to get him. In the ancient Near East, curses pronounced by a recognized professional were taken as seriously as a declaration of war. Balak wasn't looking for insults; he wanted Israel supernaturally weakened before a single sword was drawn.

What makes the story remarkable — and what Moses is reminding this new generation of — is that it happened entirely over their heads. Most of Israel probably never even knew Balak's plot was underway until it was over. They were just camped, waiting, while a foreign king and a hired prophet negotiated their destruction in a closed-door meeting on a hilltop, and God simply overruled it.

By the time Deuteronomy 23 is spoken, Moab and Ammon (a related nation, both descended from Lot) have become fixed enemies in Israel's memory — not just for Balaam, but because they refused to give Israel bread and water on the journey Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. That refusal of basic hospitality, plus the assassination attempt through Balaam, is why this law bars them from full membership in Israel's assembly.

The verb for "would not listen" is שָׁמַע (shama, H8085) Strong's — the same word behind the Shema, Israel's great confession "Hear, O Israel." It doesn't just mean sound hitting an ear; it means hearing that leads to action, hearing that grants a request. So "the LORD would not shama Balaam" means God flatly refused to act on Balaam's intentions — He heard the words, but He would not be moved by them.

The word for "turned" is הָפַךְ (haphak, H2015) Strong's, which literally means to flip something upside down or inside out — the same word used for Sodom being "overthrown." It's a violent, total reversal, not a gentle nudge. God didn't soften the curse; He turned it completely into its opposite.

The two nouns doing the flipping are קְלָלָה (qelalah, H7045) Strong's, "curse" — a word tied to contempt and vilification — and בְּרָכָה (berakah, H1293) Strong's, "blessing," which carries the sense not just of nice words but of actual prosperity, a real, tangible good pronounced over you.

And the last word, the hinge the whole verse turns on, is אָהַב (ahab, H157) Strong's — "love." It's the ordinary Hebrew word for love, the same one used for love between a man and a woman, or a father and son. It's not a technical covenant term with legal distance built in; it's warm, personal, affectionate. God didn't protect Israel because of a contract clause. He did it because He was fond of them, the way you're fond of someone you'd fight for.

Balaam's mouth, opened to curse and forced instead to bless, is a small preview of something much bigger: a curse that gets swallowed up and turned inside out by love. Paul picks up almost this exact logic in Romans 8:31 — "If God is for us, who can be against us?" — right after describing how nothing, no accusation, no condemnation, can stick to someone God has set His love on in Christ. That's Deuteronomy 23:5 grown to full size: not just one nation protected from one hired curse, but everyone in Christ protected from every accusation that could ever be brought against them ( Romans 8:33-34).

But there's a deeper layer. On the cross, the curse doesn't just get deflected — it gets absorbed and reversed at the source. Galatians 3:13 says Christ became a curse for us, so that the blessing of Abraham could come to the nations. Balaam's curse bounced off Israel and became a blessing spoken over them from the outside. What happens at the cross is different and more costly: Jesus takes the curse into himself, lets it land, and blessing comes out the other side — for you, for anyone who trusts him, even people from nations like Moab that this very chapter shuts out (and remember, Ruth the Moabitess ends up in Jesus' own family line — Matthew 1:5).

And notice the reason given for the reversal: love, not merit. That's the whole gospel in miniature. God didn't spare Israel because they'd earned it — this same book of Deuteronomy is blunt that they were stubborn and small ( Deuteronomy 7:7; 9:6). He acted because He loved them, full stop. That's exactly how Paul describes God's love for you in Christ: "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" ( Romans 5:8). The curse-reversal at Balaam's mouth is a footnote; the curse-reversal at the cross is the whole book.

Here's the uncomfortable part: Israel never knew, in real time, that anyone was trying to destroy them. No sirens went off. No one huddled in prayer meetings begging God to intervene against Balaam, because nobody on the ground even knew the danger existed. God was fighting for them in a closed-door meeting they weren't invited to and never heard about until Moses told them the story years later.

Sit with that. How much of your life has been like this — dangers deflected, curses turned to blessing, disasters that simply never happened to you — and you never knew, never thanked God, because you never saw the battle? This verse isn't asking you to feel grateful for the crises you survived. It's asking you to trust that God has been doing this kind of hidden work the whole time, on your behalf, whether or not you ever get the memo.

That's a hard ask if your instinct is to measure God's love by what you can feel or see. This verse insists that love which never shows itself is still real, still active, still decisive. The cost here is trusting a love you mostly can't verify. You don't get to audit God's hidden protections. You just get to hear, later — sometimes decades later, like this generation did — that He was for you the whole time.

And it should reshape how you see the hard things that did land — the losses, the wounds, the prayers that seemed to go unanswered. If God turned an entire professional curse into blessing without Israel lifting a finger, what does that say about the things in your life that felt like curses at the time? Not every hard thing gets reversed the way Balaam's did. But the character behind this verse — a God who takes what's meant to destroy you and bends it toward your good — is the same character Paul leans on in Romans 8:28. Let this verse loosen your grip on needing to see the mechanism. You don't have to see it to trust the hand behind it.

• Lord, thank You for the battles You've fought for me that I never even knew were happening — show me, even now, some of what You've turned aside.
• I confess I often measure Your love by what I can feel or see; teach me to trust You in the dark, the way this whole generation had to.
• Where something in my life still feels like an unrelieved curse, I ask You to do what You did with Balaam's words — turn it, flip it, make it into blessing.
• Thank You that Your love for me isn't based on my merit but on Your own choice to set Your affection on me, even before I knew You.
• Help me remember, the next time I'm afraid, that You are for me, and nothing hired against me can stand against that.
