Deuteronomy 22:13

Look at what this verse actually does: it opens a case. "Suppose a man marries a woman, has relations with her, and comes to hate her" — this is the first line of a legal scenario that runs all the way through verse 21. It's the "if" that sets up an "then." By itself it feels ugly and abrupt, and it's meant to. You're watching a marriage curdle in three quick steps: a man takes a wife, sleeps with her, and then turns cold.

What's easy to miss is that little word hate. It doesn't mean he merely dislikes her. In the flow of this law it means he's decided to be rid of her, and he's willing to destroy her to do it. The next verses spell it out: he invents a lie, claiming she wasn't a virgin on their wedding night, which in that world would ruin her for life. Four ordinary Hebrew words carry the weight, and the last one is a gut-punch.

The verse opens with אִישׁ (ʼîysh, H376) — simply "a man," a male individual Strong's. Paired with it is אִשָּׁה (ʼishshâh, H802), "a woman," which is literally the feminine form of the word for man Strong's. The language itself whispers that these two belong together, made of the same stuff — the same picture Genesis paints when the woman is drawn from the man's side.

Then comes לָקַח (lâqach, H3947), "to take" Strong's. "A man takes a wife." In that culture, that's the normal word for marrying — but sit with it. He takes. And the next verb, בּוֹא (bôwʼ, H935), "to go or come" Strong's, is the plain Hebrew way of saying he sleeps with her. He takes, he uses.

And then the hinge word: שָׂנֵא (sânêʼ, H8130), "to hate — personally" Strong's. Not "grew bored," not "drifted." There's an even deeper thread here. This law exists to protect a woman from being falsely accused and thrown away. And that's precisely what the gospel does for you. The accuser — Scripture literally calls Satan "the accuser of our brothers" ( Revelation 12:10) — stands ready to charge you with every real and invented failure. So this dark little verse becomes a shadow that makes the light brighter. Israel needed a law to restrain cruel husbands because human love runs out. Jesus is the Bridegroom whose love never runs out — who saw his bride at her worst and said not "I hate her" but "I lay down my life for her." Every earthly marriage that keeps covenant through cold seasons is a small picture of him. And every marriage that fails still points, by its ache, to the one Husband who never will.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: what do you do with people once they've stopped being useful to you?

The man in this text is not a monster in the usual sense. He married legally. He did nothing violent — at first. His sin is quieter and far more common: he used someone to satisfy himself, and once satisfied, he wanted her gone. Take, come to, hate. If you're honest, you know that sequence from the inside. Maybe not in marriage — maybe with a friend who was fun until they needed something from you, a coworker you charmed until they couldn't advance your career, a family member whose company you enjoy right up until it costs you. We are all capable of turning a person into a thing.

And if you're the one who's been used and discarded, hear this: God writes laws to protect exactly you. He sees the slander. He is not neutral about your disgrace.

The gospel doesn't ask you to muster warmer feelings. It asks you to receive the love of a Bridegroom who stayed — and then go and stay like him.

• Defender of the vulnerable, protect and vindicate those who are being slandered and discarded, and make me an instrument of that protection, not a source of the harm.
• When the accuser lists my failures, let me rest in the truth that it is you who justifies, and no charge against me can stand.

• Who in my life have I loved for what they gave me, and grown cold toward once they stopped giving it? What would repentance toward that person actually look like?
• When my feelings toward someone I'm committed to turn cold, do I stay honest — or do I start building a case against them to justify walking away?
• This law forced a cruel man to face the consequences of his contempt. Where am I hoping to discard someone without any cost to myself?
• Have I ever been the one used and thrown away? Can I believe that God is not neutral about my disgrace, but stands as my defender?
• Christ stayed with a bride who failed him. Where is he calling me to stay — and what am I afraid it will cost?
