Deuteronomy 10:12

Look at how Moses opens this: "And now, O Israel..." That word "now" is doing heavy lifting. He's just spent nine chapters retelling the whole ugly, glorious history — the golden calf, the broken tablets, God's readiness to wipe Israel out, Moses lying face-down for forty days begging for mercy, and God relenting and re-carving the tablets with his own hand. So "now" doesn't mean "next item on the agenda." It means: after all that grace, after being forgiven when you deserved to be destroyed, here's the question. And the question is almost startling in how small it sounds: what does God actually want from you? Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament

Then Moses lists it out, and it's worth slowing down because it's not a checklist of separate tasks — it's one thing described five ways, each layer feeding the next. Fear him. Walk in his ways. Love him. Serve him. And do it with all your heart and all your soul — not a slice of you, not the parts that are convenient. Fear comes first here, which is interesting, because in Deuteronomy 6:5 love comes first with no mention of fear at all. Older commentators noticed this and read it as intentional: fear without love turns into cringing, servile dread; love without fear turns soft and presumptuous, like God is your buddy instead of your King Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. You need both, held together, or you get a lopsided relationship with God.

The phrase "what does the Lord require of you" is nearly identical to Micah 6:8, and that's not an accident — Micah is almost certainly echoing this verse centuries later, showing that this wasn't a passing thought but the settled answer Israel kept needing to hear. Where Christians disagree: some read "require" here as covenant law — obey and you stay in the land, disobey and you're exiled — a conditional, almost transactional relationship. Others (and I think the text itself pushes this way, given the "now" that follows chapters of undeserved mercy) read it as gratitude-driven devotion: not "do this to earn my favor" but "you already have my favor — now respond like it." That distinction matters enormously for how you read the whole book of Deuteronomy.

Picture this scene: it's near the end of Moses' life, somewhere around 1400 BC (or a bit later, depending which chronology you follow), and the people of Israel are camped on the plains of Moab, just east of the Jordan River, staring across at the land of Canaan they're about to enter. Moses himself won't cross over — he knows this is his last extended address to the nation he's led for forty years through the wilderness. Deuteronomy is essentially his farewell sermon, structured like an ancient treaty between a great king and a smaller nation under his protection — you make promises, the king makes promises, and there are blessings for keeping the deal and consequences for breaking it.

But right before our verse, Moses has been rehearsing the worst chapter of their shared history: the incident at Mount Sinai (also called Horeb) where, while Moses was up the mountain receiving the Ten Commandments, the people melted their gold jewelry and built a calf to worship instead of God. God was ready to destroy the whole nation on the spot. Moses threw himself into the gap, fasting and pleading for forty days, and God relented — not because Israel deserved it, but because Moses appealed to God's own character and promises. Moses even smashed the first set of stone tablets in fury and had to carve new ones by God's instruction ( Deuteronomy 10:1-5) Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

So when Moses says "and now," he's speaking to a generation of former slaves who have watched their parents die in the wilderness for unbelief, who have themselves just been spared from national extinction, and who are about to inherit a land full of cities they didn't build and vineyards they didn't plant. This isn't abstract theology for them. It's the aftermath of a near-death experience with a holy God, and Moses is asking: given everything you've just survived, what's a reasonable response?

The verb behind "require" is שָׁאַל (shâʼal, H7592), which usually just means "to ask" or "to inquire" — it's the same word used when someone asks a simple question Strong's. It's striking that Moses doesn't use a heavier word for "command" or "demand." God isn't strong-arming Israel here; he's asking, almost inviting a response, though the content of the ask is total.

"Fear" is יָרֵא (yârêʼ, H3372) — a word that can mean sheer terror, but more often in this kind of context means reverence, the kind of trembling respect you'd have standing in front of someone infinitely bigger and holier than you Strong's Tyndale. It's not "be scared of God like he might hurt you for fun" — it's "know exactly how small you are and how great he is."

"Walk" is יָלַךְ (yâlak, H3212), a common word for literal walking, but here it's figurative — your whole course of life, the road you actually travel day by day, not just what you believe in your head Strong's. Paired with דֶּרֶךְ (derek, H1870), "way" or "road," it pictures obedience as a path you stay on, step after step, not a single decision.

"Love" is אָהַב (ʼâhab, H157) — the same word used for love between a man and woman Strong's. This isn't cool, dutiful affection. It's covenant love with heat in it.

And "serve" is עָבַד (ʻâbad, H5647), which also means "to work" or even "to be enslaved" Strong's. Heart is לֵבָב (lêbâb, H3824) — your inner, thinking self — and soul is נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh, H5315), your whole living being, your breath and vitality itself Strong's. "All your heart and all your soul" isn't poetic exaggeration. It's Moses saying: not a compartment of you — you, entirely.

Jesus was asked almost this exact question point-blank, and he answered by quoting straight from this cluster of verses. When the expert in the law asked him what the greatest commandment was, Jesus reached for Deuteronomy 6:5 — love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength ( Matthew 22:37, Luke 10:27). He didn't invent a new standard. He pointed back to what Moses already said Israel owed God, centuries earlier, standing on the plains of Moab.

But here's where it gets sharper. Deuteronomy 10:12 asks Israel to fear, walk, love, and serve God with everything — and if you're honest, reading the rest of the Old Testament, Israel couldn't do it. They kept drifting back to idols, back to half-hearted obedience, back to loving other things more than God. The command was right; the people asking to keep it were broken. That's the tension the whole Old Testament sits in and never resolves on its own.

Jesus is the one person who actually lived Deuteronomy 10:12 all the way through — feared the Father perfectly, walked every step of the road without wandering off it, loved with a whole and undivided heart, served even to death. He didn't just teach the command; he fulfilled it in a human body, on our behalf, in our place. And then, remarkably, he doesn't just leave it as an example to admire from a distance — Hebrews 12:28 picks up this same language of serving God "acceptably, with reverence and awe" and applies it to those who now belong to an unshakeable kingdom because of what Jesus secured. The fear-and-love, walk-and-serve pattern Moses laid out for Israel becomes, in Christ, not a burden you're straining to carry but a description of what a rescued heart increasingly looks like as it's being remade.

Here's the trap this verse can set for you if you're not careful: reading it as a to-do list. Fear, check. Walk, check. Love, check. Serve, check. Four boxes, all your heart and soul, submitted for approval. But that's not what's happening in the text. Moses says "now" — after mercy, not before it. The question isn't "what do you have to do to get God to love you?" It's "you've already been forgiven for the golden calf — now what's your actual response going to be?"

So ask yourself honestly: is your relationship with God still running on a transaction, where you're quietly hoping your obedience earns you something? Or have you actually let the mercy sink in deep enough that love and fear and service start to feel less like payment and more like gratitude with legs?

The cost here is specific: "all your heart and all your soul" rules out the divided life most of us are actually living — sincere on Sunday, autopilot the rest of the week; loving God in the parts of your life that don't cost anything, managing him carefully around the parts that do. This verse doesn't let you keep a private room in your heart with the door shut. It asks for the whole house.

And notice fear comes before love in this list, which should needle you a little if your picture of God has gotten too casual, too much like a life coach and not enough like the God who could have wiped Israel off the map and chose mercy instead. Reverence isn't the opposite of intimacy with God — it's what keeps intimacy with him from turning into presumption. Let both sit in you today: the trembling and the love, together.

• Lord, thank you for the mercy that comes before every "now" in my life — I haven't earned a single thing you've given me.
• Show me where I'm keeping a divided heart with you — sincere in some rooms, closed off in others — and give me the courage to open the whole house.
• Teach me to fear you rightly — not with dread, but with the reverence that keeps me from treating you casually.
• Grow in me a love for you that isn't cool or dutiful, but has real affection and desire in it.
• Where I've made obedience a transaction to earn your favor, help me see it instead as my grateful response to favor I already have.

• If someone watched your actual daily choices this week, would they conclude you fear God, or that you barely think about him?
• Where in your life is your love for God still "with some of your heart" instead of all of it — what's the specific thing you're holding back?
• Do you relate to God more out of dread, more out of casual familiarity, or is there an honest balance of reverence and affection?
• Is your obedience right now coming from gratitude for mercy already given, or from hope that it'll earn you something from God?
• What would it actually cost you this month to walk "in all his ways" in the one area you've been quietly excusing yourself from?
