Hebrews 13:6

Look at what's happening here: the writer isn't coining a new saying, he's handing you a script. "So we say with confidence" — he's telling you these are the exact words you're allowed to put in your mouth. And the words themselves are lifted straight from Psalm 118:6, with the flavor of Psalm 56:4 mixed in Tyndale. That matters. This isn't "buck up and be brave." It's "here is what a thousand years of God's people have said when they were scared, and you can say it too."

The verse comes right on the heels of Hebrews 13:5, where God promises "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Verse 6 is the response to that promise — it's what faith says back. The logic runs: God has said he won't abandon me, therefore I can say I won't be afraid. One follows the other like a hand fitting a glove. The Greek word behind "boldly say" (θαρρέω, tharrhéō) isn't quiet resignation — it's the confidence of someone who's actually decided to act on what they believe, not just feel calm about it Strong's.

Easy to miss: the question at the end — "what can man do to me?" — isn't rhetorical fluff. The writer knew his readers were facing real pressure, possibly the loss of property, standing, even life, for following Jesus (see Hebrews 10:34, 13:3 about those in prison). This isn't a verse for people with no problems. It's a verse for people staring down people who actually can hurt them.

Where this sits in the book: Hebrews has spent twelve chapters proving Jesus is better — better priest, better sacrifice, better covenant — precisely so that in chapter 13, ordinary Christians facing ordinary threats (money, persecution, fear) have solid ground to stand on. Christians don't disagree much on the meaning here, but they do disagree on how far the promise stretches — does "the Lord is my helper" mean physical safety is guaranteed, or does it mean something deeper survives even when the body doesn't? Matthew 10:28 leans hard toward the second reading.

We don't know for certain who wrote Hebrews — the earliest churches themselves argued about it — but whoever it was, they were writing to Jewish Christians, probably somewhere between AD 60 and 90, likely to a house-church community in or connected to Rome. These were people who had converted to follow Jesus and were now paying for it: some had already had their property confiscated, some had watched friends thrown in prison ( Hebrews 10:32-34), and the pressure to quietly drift back to the safety of the synagogue — to stop identifying as followers of this crucified Messiah — was real and mounting.

Chapter 13 is the practical tail end of the letter, after eleven chapters of dense argument about why Jesus is greater than the old priesthood and the old sacrifices. Here the writer gets down to street level: love each other, don't forget prisoners, honor marriage, don't chase money, and — this verse — don't be afraid of the people who can make your life hard Matthew Henry.

When the writer reaches for words, he doesn't invent a slogan. He reaches back into the Psalms — into songs that Israelite worshipers had been singing for centuries in the Temple, songs written by people who'd faced real armies, real enemies, real abandonment. Psalm 118 was sung at the great festivals; Psalm 56 was David's cry when he'd been captured by the Philistines in Gath. By quoting these, the writer is saying: you are not the first people of God to feel cornered, and you have inherited their courage along with their God. This is a community small enough, poor enough, and exposed enough that a Roman official or an angry neighbor really could take their house, their business, their freedom — which is exactly why the question "what can man do to me?" isn't decoration. It's the actual math they were doing every day.

The word translated "boldly say" is θαρρέω (tharrhéō, G2292) — "to exercise courage" Strong's. It's not the word for feeling brave; it's the word for acting brave, speaking up when your knees might be shaking. The writer isn't asking you to manufacture a feeling — he's telling you what to do with your mouth regardless of what's happening in your stomach.

"Helper" is βοηθός (boēthós, G998), built from a root meaning "to run" to someone's aid Strong's. Picture someone hearing a cry and sprinting toward it, not strolling. This is the same family of word used in Hebrews 4:16, where you're told to approach God's throne to "find grace to help" (boētheia) in your time of need. The image is consistent across the letter: God isn't a distant landlord, he's the one who runs when you call.

"I will not be afraid" uses φοβέω (phobéō, G5399) — to be alarmed, frightened, thrown into a panic Strong's. And "man" here is ánthrōpos (G444), just the ordinary word for a human being — not a specific tyrant, not Caesar by name, just "person." The contrast the sentence is built on is stark and deliberate: κύριος (kýrios, G2962), the Lord, supreme in authority, versus ánthrōpos, a mere human being. One side of that scale has real power to run to your rescue; the other side, at the very worst, can only touch your body. The grammar of the sentence puts those two words in the ring against each other and lets you watch which one is heavier.

This verse is quiet about Jesus by name, but everything underneath it is loud with him. Paul asks almost the identical question in Romans 8:31 — "If God is for us, who can be against us?" — and answers it by pointing straight at the cross: God "did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all" ( Romans 8:32). The confidence in Hebrews 13:6 isn't free-floating optimism. It's confidence purchased at a specific price. You can say "what can man do to me?" only because God has already shown, in the crucifixion and resurrection of his Son, exactly how far he'll go to be your helper — even into death and out the other side.

Remember, too, where Hebrews has spent the last twelve chapters: proving that Jesus is the great high priest who has already gone into God's presence on your behalf, who "is able to sympathize with our weaknesses" ( Hebrews 4:15) and who invites you to "approach the throne of grace with confidence" ( Hebrews 4:16) — that word "confidence" is the same territory as "boldly say" in 13:6. The boldness of chapter 13 isn't a separate idea from the boldness of chapter 4; it's the same courage, now applied to your actual enemies instead of just your sins.

And notice: Jesus himself lived this verse before he ever inspired it. He walked toward Jerusalem knowing exactly what men would do to him, and he did it without flinching, because he trusted the Father who raised the dead ( Hebrews 5:7). Matthew 10:28 pushes this further — don't fear those who can kill the body but not the soul. Jesus said that on his way to being one of those killed. He's not asking you to believe something he didn't stake his own life on.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts in front of you: what, specifically, are you afraid of right now? Not in the abstract — name it. Losing your job for telling the truth. A relationship that might end if you actually said what you believe. A diagnosis. A person who has power over your paycheck, your reputation, your safety. This verse doesn't work as a general mood — it only works pointed at something real.

And here's the cost it asks of you: it asks you to actually say the words, out loud or in your head, in the moment you're most tempted not to believe them. Not after the crisis passes and you can see it worked out fine. In the middle of it, while your hands are still shaking. That's what "boldly say" means — not the absence of fear, but speech that overrides it Strong's. Faith here isn't a feeling you wait to arrive; it's a sentence you choose to say before you feel steady.

Be honest with yourself: this verse doesn't promise that the man, the boss, the diagnosis, the enemy can't hurt you. He can. Hebrews' first readers lost property. Some of them, if tradition and history are any guide, eventually lost their lives. "What can man do to me?" isn't a promise of safety — it's a question that expects the honest answer: not much, actually, compared to what's true about you in Christ. The worst a person can do is end something that God has already promised to raise back up.

So don't rush past this verse into a slogan. Sit in the fear you actually carry today, and then say it anyway: the Lord is my helper. Let it cost you the pretense that you've got this handled on your own.

• Thank you that you are the God who runs toward the cry for help, not the one who waits to be convinced.
• Give me the courage to say "I will not be afraid" out loud in the middle of the situation, not just after it's over.

• Root my confidence in what Jesus already did on the cross, not in whether my circumstances improve.

• What am I actually afraid of right now — not the vague version, but the specific name, face, or scenario?
• Whose approval or power do I fear more than I trust God's promise to help me?
• Have I ever said "the Lord is my helper" and meant it in the moment, or only claimed it in hindsight?
• What would it cost me this week to act boldly instead of cautiously, trusting this verse is true?
• If the worst someone could do to me actually happened, what do I believe would still be true about me in Christ?
