Philemon 1:6

Paul is praying for a friend — Philemon, a man he loves, whose house church meets in his home. Look at the shape of the sentence: "I pray that your partnership in the faith may become effective." That word "become" matters. Paul isn't asking God to give Philemon a partnership he doesn't have — he already has real faith, real love for other Christians (verse 5 says so). Paul is praying that what's already there would get activated, put to work, made to actually do something in the real world Adam Clarke.

The word translated "partnership" is the same word elsewhere translated "fellowship" or "sharing" — it's not just a warm feeling, it's the actual sharing of resources, time, and care between believers John Gill. And here's the catch that becomes obvious once you know what letter you're reading: Paul is about to ask Philemon to do something costly — take back his runaway slave Onesimus, and treat him as a brother, not property. So this prayer in verse 6 isn't generic. It's Paul warming up the ground before he drops the ask in verses 8-21 Tyndale.

Now the phrase "every good thing that is ours in Christ" — the oldest manuscripts actually read "in us," not "in you" Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. That's not a small thing. Paul isn't just cataloguing Philemon's individual virtues; he's talking about the whole treasury of grace that belongs to all believers together — Paul, Philemon, and (as we'll see) Onesimus too, once he's back "in Christ." The prayer is that Philemon would come to full, active recognition of that shared inheritance — and let it reshape how he treats the man standing in front of him.

Where Christians disagree: some read "communication of your faith" as generosity/almsgiving flowing from faith Adam Clarke; others read it more broadly as the whole active outworking of belief, echoing James's insistence that real faith always shows itself in deeds ( James 2:17, James 2:14).

Paul wrote this letter from prison — likely in Rome, somewhere around AD 60-62 — to Philemon, a wealthy Christian in Colossae (a city in what's now western Turkey) whose home hosted the local church. This is Paul's shortest and most personal letter in the New Testament: one man writing to another man about one specific, awkward, expensive problem.

Here's the situation on the ground: Onesimus, Philemon's slave, had run away — and possibly stolen something on his way out (Paul hints at repaying a debt later in the letter). Somehow Onesimus ended up crossing paths with Paul in prison and became a Christian. Now Paul is sending him back — which, under Roman law, was legally required and personally terrifying for Onesimus, since a runaway slave could be branded, mutilated, or executed at his master's discretion. Paul is asking Philemon not just to spare him, but to receive him "no longer as a slave, but... as a dear brother" (verse 16).

This is the powder keg sitting underneath verse 6. Paul isn't writing a devotional thought about generic Christian fellowship. He's praying, very specifically, that Philemon's faith — which everyone already knows is real (verse 5 mentions his love and faith are already famous) — will move from being admired to being acted on, right here, in this one hard decision. The whole Roman world ran on the assumption that slaves were property, full stop. Paul is quietly asking a slave-owner to let the gospel dismantle that assumption inside his own household, without ever issuing a flat command to free Onesimus outright — he appeals instead to love, and to what Philemon already knows about grace.

The heart of the verse turns on two Greek words working together. κοινωνία (koinōnía, G2842) — "partnership" — means shared life, shared resources, a bond where what's mine becomes available to you Strong's. It's the word used for the early church "having all things in common." Paul prays this partnership would become ἐνεργής (energḗs, G1756) — "active, operative" Strong's — the word we get "energetic" from. Put together: Paul isn't praying for Philemon to feel more connected to other believers, he's praying that connection would start doing something — generating action, not just sentiment.

The second key phrase is ἐπίγνωσις (epígnōsis, G1922) — "full discernment, acknowledgement" Strong's. This isn't casual head-knowledge (there's a plainer Greek word for that); it's the epi- prefix intensifying "knowledge" into something closer to "thorough recognition, knowledge that sinks all the way in." Paul wants Philemon to fully reckon with — not just nod at — πᾶν ἀγαθὸν (pân agathón) — "every good thing" — that belongs to believers "in Christ" (ἐν Χριστῷ, using ἐν G1722 and Χριστός G5547) Strong's.

And notice the small word ὅπως (hópōs, G3704) opening the verse — it means "in the manner that," marking purpose Strong's. Paul's prayer has a target: not vague spiritual growth, but this specific outcome — full recognition leading to active partnership. The manuscript question (whether it reads "in you" or "in us") changes whether Paul is praising Philemon's private virtue or pointing him toward the shared inheritance all believers hold together Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Everything Paul is praying for here only makes sense because of what Christ has already done in the specific situation behind this letter. Later in the letter, Paul makes the connection explicit: he asks Philemon to "welcome him as you would welcome me" (verse 17) and offers to personally cover whatever Onesimus owes — "charge that to me" (verse 18-19). That's not incidental language. That's Paul acting out, in miniature, exactly what Christ did for every one of us: standing between the guilty party and the one who's owed a debt, absorbing the cost himself so reconciliation becomes possible.

The "good thing that is ours in Christ" that Paul wants Philemon to fully reckon with is this: that Philemon himself was once a debtor with nothing to offer, and Christ paid what he could never repay. Once that sinks in — really sinks in, not just as a doctrine you'd recite but as the actual shape of your own rescue — how can you hold a debt over Onesimus's head the way it was held over yours?

This is the gospel's leveling power showing up at the kitchen table. Galatians 3:28 says in Christ "there is neither slave nor free" — Philemon 1:6 is that theology forced to walk into a real house and shake a real man's hand. Paul doesn't order Philemon around; he prays that grace already received would become grace actively given, because that's how the gospel has always worked — not by decree from outside, but by transformation from within, the same way Christ didn't just forgive us from a distance but entered our mess and became our brother ( Hebrews 2:11). The "good thing" is Christ himself, and everything he's given — and Paul's whole strategy is trusting that once a man really sees that gift, he won't be able to help but pass it on.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: what good thing has God given you that you've acknowledged with your mind but never let move your hands?

You probably believe, in the abstract, that you're forgiven, adopted, secure, loved without condition. You'd say "amen" to all of it. But Paul isn't praying that Philemon would believe more correctly. He's praying that Philemon's grasp of grace would become energetic — that it would actually go do something, specifically something that costs him his comfort, his social standing, his legal rights over another human being.

So ask yourself where your faith is still sitting on the shelf, admired but unused. Maybe it's a grudge you're holding against someone who owes you an apology you know Christ has already absorbed on your behalf. Maybe it's generosity you talk about but never practice, because full recognition of grace hasn't reached your wallet yet. Maybe it's a relationship where you know exactly what forgiveness would cost you, and you keep the "good thing you have in Christ" as a private comfort instead of a public act.

James won't let you off easy here either: faith without action isn't resting faith, it's dead faith ( James 2:17). Paul's prayer for Philemon is a prayer worth praying over your own life today — not "God, help me feel closer to you," but "God, let what I already know about your grace actually move me toward the person I'd rather avoid." That's the cost this verse names. Not new information. Obedience with what you already have.

• Make my faith active, not just admired — let it produce real, costly generosity toward someone this week.

• Where I've been keeping score with someone, soften me the way Paul asked Philemon to be softened.
