Philippians 1:6

Look at what Paul is actually saying here. He's not giving the Philippians a pep talk about trying harder. He's telling them why he's confident — and notice, the confidence isn't in them. It's in "He who began" the work. The subject of the sentence is God, start to finish Tyndale.

Two verbs carry the whole verse: God "began" (Greek enárchomai, G1728) a good work, and God will "carry it on to completion" (epiteléō, G2005). Same God, both verbs. Paul isn't hoping the Philippians will finish what God started — he's saying God himself will finish what God himself started. That's the whole engine of the sentence Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

What is "the good work"? Easy to misread this as: your good deeds, your ministry, your ability to hold a church together. But look at the flow from verse 5 — Paul's confidence grows out of their "partnership in the gospel." The good work is God's grace-work in them: the faith he planted, the transformation he's driving toward, not a project they're managing John Gill. Paul says the same thing plainly two verses later in Philippians 2:13 — it's God who works in you.

And there's a finish line named: "the day of Christ Jesus" — meaning the day Jesus returns and everything gets set right. This isn't vague optimism about self-improvement. It's aimed at a specific future event.

Where this sits in the letter: Paul is writing from prison (see Philippians 1:12-14), to a church he loves, and this is the very first thing he wants them to feel secure about before he gets to harder material later — suffering, humility, rivalry. He's building their confidence on bedrock before asking them to stand under pressure.

Where Christians disagree: this verse sits right in the middle of the debate over whether a genuine believer can lose their salvation. Those in the Reformed/Calvinist tradition read this as a promise of the perseverance of the saints — God guarantees the finish. Others (Wesleyan/Arminian, and many Catholic readers) read it as Paul's confidence about this particular church, not an ironclad guarantee for every individual regardless of their own response — Scripture elsewhere warns believers to examine themselves and not fall away ( 2 Corinthians 13:5, Hebrews 3:12). Both sides agree God is the one doing the real work; they disagree on whether that work can be resisted or abandoned.

Paul wrote this letter from prison — probably in Rome, around AD 60–62, though some scholars argue for an earlier imprisonment in Ephesus. Either way, he's chained, awaiting a verdict that could end in execution (he says as much in Philippians 1:20-23). This is not a man writing from a comfortable study. He's writing to people he loves while facing death.

Philippi was a Roman colony in northern Greece — which mattered enormously to its citizens. A "colony" wasn't just a town; it was a little outpost of Rome itself, full of retired soldiers and people who took Roman citizenship and Roman order very seriously. This is the church Paul planted on his second missionary journey ( Acts 16), the one that started in a riverside prayer meeting with a businesswoman named Lydia and ended with Paul and Silas getting flogged and thrown in jail after casting a spirit out of an enslaved girl. It was a costly, dramatic beginning.

By the time Paul writes this letter, maybe ten years later, that church has been consistently generous toward him — they're actually the ones who sent him financial support more than once ( Philippians 4:15-16), something Paul rarely let churches do. That's the "partnership in the gospel" he mentions in verse 5, and it's the concrete evidence, in his mind, that God really is at work in them. He's not speaking in the abstract. He watched them give, watched them suffer for their faith under the same kind of local hostility he'd faced, and drew a conclusion: a God who started this in you isn't going to walk away from it now.

Two verbs do the heavy lifting, and they're doing something clever together.

ἐναρξάμενος (from enárchomai, G1728) means to commence, to get something started Strong's. It's built from en ("in") plus archomai ("begin") — picture laying the first stone of a foundation.

ἐπιτελέσει (from epiteléō, G2005) means to fulfill completely, to carry something all the way to its finish Strong's. It comes from epí ("upon, toward") plus teléō ("to complete" — the same root behind Jesus' cry "It is finished" in John 19:30). This isn't just "stop working" — it's "bring to its intended end."

Paul deliberately pairs a begin-word with a finish-word, both governed by the same subject, God. It's like saying "the One who laid the foundation will also set the capstone" — same builder, whole project.

Then there's πεποιθὼς (from peíthō, G3982) — "being confident." The root idea is to be persuaded, convinced by evidence, to the point of relying on it Strong's. This isn't wishful thinking or crossed fingers. It's the confidence of a man who's seen enough proof to stake his weight on it.

And the work is called ἀγαθόν (agathós, G18) — "good" in the fullest sense, not just morally acceptable but beneficial, whole, the kind of good God himself pronounces over creation Strong's. The finish line is ἡμέρα... Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ — "the day of Christ Jesus" (G2250, G5547) — a specific appointed day, not a metaphor for "someday."

The whole confidence of this verse hangs entirely on who's doing the work — and that's where Jesus stands at the center, both as the one who starts it and the one who finishes it. Hebrews 12:2 calls him "the author and perfecter of our faith" — the same begin-and-complete pairing Paul uses here, but pinned directly to Jesus' name. He's not a bystander to your spiritual life; he's the one who laid the foundation stone and the one setting the capstone.

Think about what "began a good work in you" actually cost. It didn't start with your decision to try harder or clean up your life. It started at a cross, where Jesus absorbed what your sin actually deserved, and it started again at an empty tomb, where resurrection life became something he could actually put inside you. The "good work" Paul's confident about is nothing less than union with a risen Christ working itself out in a real, ordinary human life — yours.

And "the day of Christ Jesus" isn't a vague future — it's the day this same Jesus returns to finish what he started in the whole creation, not just in individual souls. Paul says almost the identical thing in 1 Corinthians 1:8: Christ himself will sustain you to the end, so that you'll be blameless on that day. The confidence isn't in your grip on him. It's in his grip on you — a grip strong enough to survive a cross and a grave, which means it's strong enough to survive whatever's currently threatening to unravel you.

If you want to know what "finishing the work" ultimately looks like, look at Jesus on Easter morning. That's not a metaphor for your future — Paul is saying the same resurrection power that raised him is the power currently, patiently, finishing you.

Here's the honest question this verse puts to you: do you actually believe God isn't finished with you yet?

Because most days, you probably don't feel like a "good work" in progress. You feel like the same person who lost their temper again, scrolled past the same temptation again, prayed the same half-hearted prayer again. The gap between who you are and who you're supposed to be doesn't look like it's closing. It might even look like it's widening.

Paul isn't writing to people who've got it together. He's writing to a church in a hostile Roman colony, and he's writing it from a prison cell, facing the real possibility of execution. If anyone had reason to doubt whether God finishes what he starts, it was Paul, chained up with no idea how this ends. And yet — "being confident of this very thing." Not confident in the Philippians' track record. Confident in the character of the God who started the project.

Here's the cost this verse asks of you: stop auditing yourself as if you're the one responsible for finishing what only God can finish Adam Clarke. That's not permission to coast — Paul will spend the rest of this letter pushing them toward costly obedience, humility, and suffering well. But it strips away the exhausting lie that your standing with God depends on you gritting your way to the finish line. You didn't start this. You can't finish it either. Your job is to keep showing up — to keep believing, keep obeying, keep leaning — while trusting that the hand doing the actual work isn't yours.

Let that be a relief today, not an excuse. Rest in it enough to keep walking.

• Help me hold together both truths: that I'm called to obey and strive, and that the outcome ultimately rests in your hands, not mine.

• Can you point to concrete evidence — like Paul could with the Philippians' generosity — that God has actually been at work in you? What is it?
• Does "the day of Christ Jesus" feel real and near to you, or like an abstract idea you rarely think about?
• If you truly believed God wasn't done with you, what would you stop being so afraid of?
• Where does this verse comfort you — and where might you be tempted to use it as an excuse to stop obeying?
