Numbers 5:27

This is the payoff verse of a strange and uncomfortable ritual — the "test of jealousy" in Numbers 5:11-31. A husband suspects his wife of adultery but has no witnesses, no proof, nothing but suspicion. So the priest takes her before the LORD, mixes holy water with dust from the tabernacle floor, writes curses on a scroll, washes the ink into the water, and makes her drink it while she swears an oath. Verse 27 tells you what happens if she's guilty: the water "enters her" — it doesn't just sit in her stomach, it becomes an active agent of judgment — and her belly swells, her thigh shrivels (or "falls away," some translations say "rots"), and she becomes "accursed among her people," meaning publicly, visibly marked as guilty in front of the whole community John Gill.

What's easy to miss: this isn't Moses inventing torture. Compared to the surrounding ancient world, where a suspected adulteress might be drowned, stoned without trial, or subjected to trial by fire, this ritual is remarkably restrained — it puts the verdict entirely in God's hands, not the husband's rage or the community's gossip Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. If she's innocent, nothing happens to her at all (v. 28), and the jealous husband is stopped cold from taking justice into his own hands.

Christians disagree about how literally to read the physical effects — some see this as describing an actual, divinely-caused physical judgment; others read it as ritual language for social and reproductive ruin (barrenness, disgrace) that would naturally follow public shame. Numbers was compiled from material going back to Moses and the wilderness generation, roughly 1400-1200 BC depending on your dating, addressed to Israel as they organized themselves as a camp of tribes moving toward the promised land. This chapter comes right after the census and tribal arrangement — Israel is being organized not just militarily but morally, as a community that has to figure out how to live together without a police force, a court system, or DNA testing.

Picture the problem this law solves: a man becomes consumed with suspicion that his wife has slept with another man. There were no witnesses — if there had been, the case would go to the elders and normal law would apply, with the death penalty for proven adultery ( Leviticus 20:10). But here there's nothing except gnawing doubt. In the ancient Near Eastern world more broadly, jealous husbands had brutal options — a wife might simply be killed, divorced without recourse, or thrown into a river to "let the gods decide" by whether she drowned. Israel's law took this raw, dangerous human emotion — jealousy, which can destroy a marriage and a woman's life on mere suspicion — and forced it through the tabernacle, in front of the priest, in front of God. The husband couldn't act alone. The wife couldn't be silenced. The community couldn't gossip her into ruin. Whatever verdict came, came from the LORD, at the altar, under oath.

It's worth noting this ritual disappears from later Jewish practice — the Mishnah records that it was abolished before the Temple's destruction in AD 70, reportedly because the rabbis judged that the husbands bringing the accusation were often not faithful themselves, and the ritual only works if both parties are under the same standard of holiness.

The verb for what the water does to her is אָרַר (ʼârar, H779) — "to execrate," to curse Strong's. This isn't a vague bad-luck word; it's the same root used for the curses in Deuteronomy 28, covenant-level curses, the kind that mark someone as cut off from God's blessing. The water is called literally "the cursing waters" — it carries the curse into her body.

The word for her unfaithfulness is מָעַל (maʻal, H4604), from the verb מָעַל (mâʻal, H4603) meaning "to cover up," to act treacherously Strong's. It's a striking root — the sin of adultery here is pictured as a covering, a concealment, a secret. The whole ritual exists because this sin, by nature, hides. God's answer to a hidden sin is to bring it into the light, even if that light comes through a strange ordeal at his altar.

Her physical judgment uses two vivid, almost violent verbs: צָבָה (tsâbâh, H6638), "to grow turgid, swell up," and נָפַל (nâphal, H5307), "to fall" — her thigh "falls," some read this as wasting away, others as miscarriage or loss of the ability to bear children Strong's. The word for "bitter," מַר (mar, H4751), is the same bitterness word used elsewhere for grief and poison — this water, which began as ordinary tabernacle water (מַיִם, mayim, H4325), becomes something that tastes like death to the guilty Strong's. Note too that ʼîysh (H376, "man") and ʼishshâh (H802, "woman") share a root — the text keeps the covenant pairing of husband and wife in view even as it exposes the fracture between them Strong's.

This verse is uncomfortable to read next to the gospel, and that discomfort is worth sitting in rather than smoothing over. Here, a woman under suspicion drinks bitter water that either curses her or leaves her untouched — her body bears the verdict. The gospel flips this on its head: at the cross, Jesus — who is utterly innocent, the one true faithful bridegroom — drinks the cup of God's curse himself, though he did nothing to deserve it. Paul says it plainly in Galatians 3:13: "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us." The bitter water that should have found guilty people finds him instead.

There's also a marriage picture running underneath. Israel is repeatedly called God's unfaithful wife in the prophets — Hosea marries a woman like this on purpose as a living picture. The people whom Zechariah 8:13 says have "been a curse among the nations" are the same covenant-breaking bride this ritual anticipates on a small scale. And yet God's answer to Israel's unfaithfulness, in Zechariah's promise, isn't to leave her cursed forever — "I will save you, and you will be a blessing." That's the trajectory the whole Bible takes: from a bride under suspicion and curse, to a bride washed clean. Ephesians 5:25-27 says Christ loved the church and gave himself for her "to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle... holy and blameless." He doesn't just test the bride for guilt — he becomes the one who bears the guilt so she can stand clean.

If you've ever felt the corrosive burn of guilt eating away at you from the inside, the way this passage describes water becoming bitter and rotting from within — that's what Jesus took into his own body on the cross, so it wouldn't have to eat away at you forever.

You probably don't live under a law like this one, but you know the feeling it's describing — the corrosive power of suspicion, the way a secret sin sits like poison in a relationship, the way hidden guilt can make you sick from the inside out even before anyone else finds out. This text isn't really about ancient water rituals. It's about the fact that God takes hidden unfaithfulness with total seriousness, even when no human court can prove it, and he sees straight through to what's covered up.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: what are you covering up right now, trusting that no one will ever find out? A hidden compromise, a private betrayal, a secret you've built a whole public life around hiding? The Hebrew word for her sin literally means "covering" — that's what sin does, it hides, it disguises itself, it waits in the dark hoping to never be tested. But God is the God who sees. Hebrews 4:13 says "nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight." You are not, actually, getting away with anything.

But don't stop at fear. The whole point of Christ's cross is that he took the bitter cup so that you wouldn't have to drink poison for your secrets forever. The cost this verse asks of you is honesty — actual, specific, name-it-out-loud honesty with God about whatever you're covering up. Not vague guilt, but the particular thing. He already knows. The question is whether you'll bring it into the light yourself, now, while grace is still on offer, rather than waiting for it to be dragged out later.

• Give me the courage to bring hidden things into the light before you and to people I've wronged, rather than hoping I'll get away with them.
• Where I've been unfaithful — in marriage, in promises, in small daily betrayals — soften my heart toward repentance instead of excuse.
• Make me a person who tells the truth even when it costs me, because you are a God who sees everything anyway.
