Numbers 24:17

Look at where you are in the story: a pagan prophet named Balaam has been hired — three times now — to curse Israel, and three times God has turned the curse into a blessing coming out of his own mouth. This verse is the climax of his fourth and final oracle, and it's the strangest and most far-reaching one yet. Balaam starts by saying he sees something, but not now — not something happening in front of him, but something far off in time Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. He's straining his eyes toward a future he won't live to see.

Then the picture: a star will come out of Jacob, a scepter will rise out of Israel. Both words are royal code. In the ancient world, a rising star meant a great king was being born or crowned Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament; a scepter — a ruler's staff — meant someone was about to actually reign, not just exist. "Jacob" and "Israel" are the same nation, named twice for emphasis — this king comes from this people, no one else. And then the violence: he'll crush skulls, he'll strike down Moab and "the sons of Sheth" (probably a poetic way of naming Israel's enemies broadly, maybe the Moabites themselves, maybe a wider group Tyndale).

Here's what's easy to miss: Balaam is not a good man. He's a hired gun who, a few chapters later, still tries to profit off Israel's downfall ( Numbers 31:16). And yet God puts a genuine, staggering prophecy in his mouth anyway. That should unsettle you a little — God doesn't need Balaam's heart to be right for Balaam's mouth to speak truth.

Where does this land historically first? Most readers, ancient and modern, see an immediate fulfillment in King David, who did in fact crush Moab ( 2 Samuel 8:2, 1 Chronicles 18:2) Tyndale. The disagreement among Christians is really about layering: is this only about David, or does the oracle deliberately point past David to someone greater? Almost every major commentator says both — David fulfills it in shadow, but the language outruns him Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

This scene sits near the end of Israel's forty years wandering in the wilderness, likely around 1400 BC on a conservative dating, as the nation camps on the plains of Moab just east of the Jordan River, poised to enter the promised land. Balak, the king of Moab, sees this enormous nomadic people camped on his border and panics — not because Israel has attacked him, but simply because there are so many of them ( Numbers 22:3-4). So he does what kings in that world did when they feared an army more than they trusted their own: he hires a diviner. Balaam wasn't some random con man — he was a well-known seer from Mesopotamia (probably from the region of the Euphrates), the kind of professional whose blessings and curses were taken seriously by kings far outside Israel. Archaeological finds at a place called Deir 'Alla in Jordan actually mention a "Balaam son of Beor" as a famous seer, confirming he was a real figure known in the wider culture, not just an Israelite invention.

Balak's plan was straightforward: pay Balaam to curse Israel before battle, because in that world people believed a curse spoken by the right mouth could weaken an army before a single sword was drawn. Three times Balak sets up an altar on a high place, three times Balaam opens his mouth to curse, and three times blessing comes out instead — much to Balak's fury. By chapter 24, Balak has given up trying to control the outcome and Balaam, now clearly under God's compulsion rather than Balak's payroll, delivers this fourth oracle unbidden, looking centuries down the road to a king who hasn't been born yet. Moab, the nation on the receiving end of this prophecy's violence, was descended from Lot ( Genesis 19:37) — a people related to Israel by blood but repeatedly hostile to them throughout the Old Testament, from Balak's day all the way to the days of the kings.

The word for "star" is כּוֹכָב (kôwkâb, H3556), and the Strong's definition itself notes it can mean literally a star or figuratively "a prince" Strong's — the word was already doing double duty as royal imagery before Balaam even used it here.

"Scepter" is שֵׁבֶט (shêbeṭ, H7626) — a stick. That's the plain, unglamorous root meaning: a stick used for walking, for punishing, for ruling, for fighting Strong's. The same word describes a shepherd's rod and a tribal "branch" (a tribe of Israel is called a shebet). So when the text says a scepter will "rise," it's picturing raw tribal identity being sharpened into a ruling authority — the stick in your hand becomes the stick of a king.

The verb for "rise" is קוּם (qûwm, H6965), a common word for standing up or being established Strong's — nothing exotic, but it matters that both the star and the scepter get action verbs: this isn't a static symbol, it's something coming into being, arriving.

And the verb for "crush" is מָחַץ (mâchats, H4272) — to dash to pieces, smash, violently subdue Strong's. It's a brutal word, used elsewhere for shattering something completely, not just wounding it. Balaam isn't picturing a diplomatic victory; he's picturing total defeat.

Finally, notice יִשְׂרָאֵל (Yisrâʼêl, H3478) itself is glossed in the Strong's entry as meaning something like "he will rule as God" Strong's — which, if you sit with it, is a strange and almost prophetic irony baked into the nation's very name, centuries before this king actually comes.

This is one of those Old Testament verses that has two floors, and you're meant to stand on both at once. The ground floor is David — a real king, a real conquest of Moab ( 2 Samuel 8:2), fulfilled in real history not long after Balaam's lifetime Tyndale. But the language keeps reaching past David, the way a shadow at evening stretches longer than the man casting it.

The New Testament writers clearly read it that way. When wise men from the East come looking for a newborn king because they saw "his star" ( Matthew 2:2), they're speaking exactly Balaam's language — a star signaling a king's arrival. Peter tells his readers to keep watching for "the morning star" rising in their hearts ( 2 Peter 1:19). And at the very end of the whole Bible, Jesus himself claims the title outright: "I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star" ( Revelation 22:16). He's not just descended from David's line — he's the star Balaam saw flickering on the horizon of a future he couldn't reach.

And the scepter? Hebrews quotes Psalm 45 and applies it directly to the Son: "Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever, and justice is the scepter of Your kingdom" ( Hebrews 1:8). Genesis 49:10 already promised the scepter wouldn't leave Judah's hand until the true king came — and Balaam, standing outside Israel entirely, a hired pagan, ends up confirming from the opposite direction what Jacob had already whispered over his own sons.

Even the crushing has an echo. Revelation 19:15 pictures Christ striking down the nations, and Revelation 1:7 says every eye will see him when he comes. The violence in Balaam's oracle isn't cruelty for its own sake — it's the picture of every enemy of God's people, every hostile power, finally and completely undone by the true king. That's a hard, unfinished thread — but it's the same thread.

Here's the uncomfortable thing about this verse: God spoke his most sweeping promise about the coming King through the mouth of a man who didn't love him. Balaam wanted the money. He tried three times to give Balak what he was paid for. And God overruled his mouth anyway and used it to announce Jesus, a millennium and a half before Bethlehem.

Sit with that for a second, because it cuts two ways. On one hand, it's a comfort: God's promises don't depend on the purity of the person carrying them. He can speak truth through a compromised messenger, a broken church, an imperfect sermon, even you on your worst day. On the other hand — don't get comfortable inside that comfort. A few chapters later, Balaam is still scheming for Moab's advantage, still trying to profit off Israel's ruin ( Numbers 31:16). Knowing the truth and even speaking the truth is not the same thing as belonging to it.

So the question this verse actually puts to you isn't "do I believe a king was promised?" You already know that answer if you know how the story ends. The question is whether you're watching for him the way Balaam claimed to be — "I see him, but not now" — or whether, like Balaam, you're happy to profit from proximity to God's people and God's promises without ever surrendering to the King himself.

The cost here is specific: this King crushes enemies. If you're still holding onto some corner of your life as an enemy camp — some sin you're negotiating with, some resentment you're feeding, some idol you're still paying Balaam's fee to protect — this verse says that camp doesn't survive his arrival. Better to surrender it now than have it crushed later.

• Show me the "Moab" in my own life — the enemy camp I've been protecting instead of surrendering to your rule.
• I confess I'd rather use you for what I can get, like Balaam, than actually bow to you as King — change my heart.
• Thank you that your kingdom will finally and completely put every hostile power to rest — give me patience while I wait for that day.

• Where in your life are you more like Balaam — technically speaking true things about God while your actual loyalties lie somewhere else?
• What would it look like for you to say honestly, "I see him, but not now, not near" — to admit how far off God's promises still feel to you right now?
• Is there an "enemy camp" in your life — a habit, relationship, or resentment — that you know won't survive when Christ's rule is complete in you?
• Does it comfort or unsettle you that God used a compromised, money-driven man to deliver one of the clearest promises about Jesus in the whole Old Testament? Why?
• When you picture Jesus as the crushing King of this verse, does that image sit easily next to the gentle Jesus you usually imagine — and if not, which picture have you been avoiding?
