Galatians 4:4

Look at how the sentence is built: "when the fullness of the time had come" — not "a" time, but "the" time, like a clock God alone was watching finally struck the hour Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Then four short phrases stack up, each one doing real work: God sent. His Son. Born of a woman. Born under the law. Paul isn't writing poetry for its own sake — he's building an argument. He's just spent three chapters proving that the law (the Old Testament system of commands given through Moses) could never make anyone right with God, that it was always meant to be a guardian holding the place until something better arrived ( Galatians 3:24). Now here's the something better.

Notice what's easy to skim past: "born of a woman" is Paul's way of saying Jesus was fully, completely human — not a ghost, not a vision, not a myth, but a baby who came through a woman's body like every other human being who ever lived. And "born under the law" means he was born a Jew, under the actual authority of the Torah, obligated to keep it just like every other Israelite. Both phrases matter because Paul's whole point in this letter is about freedom from the law — and you can't be freed from something you were never actually under. Jesus had to be all the way in the system to get us all the way out of it.

This verse sits right at the hinge of Paul's argument in Galatians: chapters 1–4 have been building the case that we're not made right with God by keeping rules, and 4:4-5 is the theological center of gravity — the moment he explains how God actually pulled off the rescue Matthew Henry. Christians don't disagree much about the plain sense here, but they've argued for centuries over exactly what "fullness of time" means — was it primarily about Roman roads and a shared language making the world ready, or was it about God's own hidden timetable, independent of any human readiness? Both readings show up across church history.

Paul wrote this letter around AD 48-55 to a cluster of churches in Galatia, a region in what's now central Turkey. He'd planted these churches himself, and now teachers had come in behind him insisting that Gentile (non-Jewish) believers needed to be circumcised and keep the Jewish law to really belong to God's people. Paul is furious — not academically annoyed, furious — because he thinks this guts the whole point of what Jesus did.

When Paul writes "the fullness of time had come," he's pointing back about fifty years before his own writing, to the birth of Jesus under Caesar Augustus, in a world that had just been stitched together in a strange, providential way. Rome had paved roads across the whole Mediterranean world and kept a rough peace, which meant a message could travel from Jerusalem to Rome without an army stopping it. Greek had become the common trade language everywhere, so a letter written in Greek could be read from Turkey to Italy. And in the middle of it all sat the Jewish people, scattered in synagogues in nearly every major city, carrying a centuries-old expectation — rooted in prophecies like Isaiah 7:14 — that God would send a promised deliverer, a Messiah, born of a virgin, from David's family line.

None of that was an accident to Paul. He's not writing a history lecture; he's making a theological point to people being pressured to go back under Jewish law as if Jesus hadn't already come and settled the matter. He wants the Galatians to feel the weight of timing: God didn't send his Son randomly, and he didn't send him too early or too late Adam Clarke. The long wait — the centuries of law, prophets, exile, and longing recorded across the Old Testament — was itself part of the plan, preparing a world (and a people) who could recognize what had finally arrived.

The phrase "fullness of time" is τὸ πλήρωμα τοῦ χρόνου — plḗrōma (G4138) meaning a completion, something filled all the way up, and chrónos (G5550), which is time as a measured span or duration, distinct from the Greek word for a fixed appointed moment Strong's. So the picture isn't just "eventually" — it's a container being filled drop by drop until it's brimming over. Time itself had a measure God was watching, and it finally reached full.

The verb for "sent" is ἐξαπέστειλεν, from exapostéllō (G1821), a compound of "out from" (ek) and "send off" (apostéllō) — it means to dispatch someone on a specific mission, not just to let them wander off Strong's. This is the same verb used for sending an official envoy. God didn't lose his Son into the world; he commissioned him.

"Born" here is γενόμενον, from gínomai (G1096), which more literally means "became" or "came into being" — it's the word for something coming into existence, not simply the ordinary word for physical birth Strong's. Paul chooses it (rather than a plainer "birth" word) because he wants you to feel the strangeness: the eternal Son became something he wasn't before — flesh, under time, under law.

And "under the law" is ὑπὸ νόμον, using hypó (G5259), a preposition of being positioned beneath something — under its authority, its weight, its claim on you Strong's. That's the same word Paul uses elsewhere for slaves under a master. Jesus wasn't just near the law. He was under it, the way you and I are under it — obligated, accountable, bound.

This verse is the Christ connection — it's Paul's own summary of the incarnation, the moment God the Son took on a human body and a human life. Everything the Old Testament had been pointing toward — the promise to crush the serpent through a human offspring in Genesis 3:15, the prophecy of a virgin-born son named Immanuel ("God with us") in Isaiah 7:14, the covenant that a king from David's line would reign forever — lands here, in an actual human baby, born to an actual woman, in an actual moment in history. Matthew 1:23 and Luke 2:7 give you the narrative; Galatians 4:4 gives you the theology underneath it.

But don't miss why Paul specifically says "born under the law." He's not just saying Jesus became human — plenty of that is in John 1:14 ("the Word became flesh"). He's saying Jesus became human in a particular condition: bound by the very law that condemns you and me for failing to keep it. Romans 8:3 says the law was powerless because it was weakened by human flesh — it could diagnose the disease but never cure it. So God did something the law never could: he sent his own Son in that same weak, law-bound flesh, and where we fail, Jesus obeyed perfectly, and where we're condemned, he took the sentence Tyndale. Two verses later, Paul says God did this "so that we might receive adoption as sons" — the incarnation wasn't an end in itself, it was the mechanism of a rescue and an adoption.

So when you read "born of a woman, born under the law," you're watching the hinge of the whole Bible turn. The eternal Son steps down into the exact conditions of the people he came to save — not visiting from a safe distance, but all the way in, under the same law, under the same weight — so he could walk back out the other side carrying you with him.

Here's what this verse asks you to sit with: God waited. Centuries of prophets crying out, generations under a law nobody could keep, empires rising and falling — and God didn't rush. If you've ever prayed for years without an answer, felt like heaven was silent while your life fell apart on schedule, this verse doesn't promise you'll understand the timing. It promises the timing is real, that God isn't asleep at the wheel even when the wait feels unbearable. That's a hard word if you're in a waiting season right now. It costs you something to trust a timetable you can't see.

But there's a sharper cost hiding in "born under the law." If Jesus had to be born under the law to rescue people who were under the law, that means you actually were under it — accountable, obligated, failing. It's tempting to read Galatians as an abstract argument about circumcision and Old Testament rules that don't apply to you anyway. But Paul's point cuts wider: whatever law you're measuring yourself against right now — your own moral code, your parents' expectations, the invisible scoreboard you keep in your head — you're under it, and you're not keeping it. Jesus didn't come to help you keep it better. He came to be born under it for you, to succeed where you and I keep failing, so that the whole scoreboard gets torn down and replaced with something else: adoption, not performance.

So the question this verse actually puts to you today is: are you still trying to earn your way into God's family by keeping some law — even a self-invented one — when God already sent his Son to do what the law never could? Let that go. It's harder than it sounds. Trusting a finished rescue is often more humbling than trying to earn one.

• Lord, thank you that you didn't send your Son too early or too late, but exactly when the time was full — help me trust your timing in my own waiting right now.
• Jesus, thank you for stepping down into a real human body, a real family, a real law you had to keep — you didn't rescue me from a distance.
• Forgive me for the ways I still try to earn my place with you through my own performance instead of resting in what you already accomplished under the law for me.
• Holy Spirit, help me feel the weight of what it cost the Son to be "sent" — not an accident, but a mission, undertaken on purpose, for me.
• God, give me patience in the seasons where your plan isn't visible yet, the way it wasn't visible to the prophets who waited centuries for this moment.

• What "law" — real or self-invented — are you still quietly trying to keep well enough to earn God's approval?
• Where in your life right now do you most feel like you're waiting on God's timing, and how does "the fullness of time" challenge the story you're telling yourself about that wait?
• Does it change anything for you to know Jesus was genuinely, fully human — born, obligated, under real pressure — rather than just visiting earth from a safe distance?
• If Christ's rescue is finished rather than something you contribute to, what would it look like to actually stop striving today, in one specific area?
• Read back over the centuries of waiting behind this verse — prophets, exile, silence. What does it tell you about God that he doesn't work on your clock?
