II Corinthians 6:16

Paul's asking a question that's really a bomb dropped in the middle of an argument: "What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols?" The Greek word for "agreement" here, synkatathesis (G4783), literally means putting your vote down alongside someone else's Strong's — think of two people signing the same contract. Paul's saying: you cannot co-sign with an idol. Not "shouldn't," but structurally, ontologically can't — like trying to marry fire and water.

Then comes the pivot that makes this personal instead of abstract: "we are the temple of the living God." Not "we go to" or "we visit" — we are. The word for temple, naos (G3485), isn't the whole temple complex with its courts and gift shops — it's the innermost sanctuary, the holy of holies, the one room where God's actual presence lived Strong's. Paul is telling ordinary, flawed Corinthian Christians that they, together, are that room now.

Then he quotes an old promise — stitched together from several Old Testament passages, most clearly Leviticus 26:12 and Ezekiel 37:27 Jamieson-Fausset-Brown — "I will dwell with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people." This is covenant language. It's the sentence God has been saying to his people since the wilderness, and Paul quotes it as if it's finally landing on the Corinthian church itself.

Where does this sit in 2 Corinthians? Paul has spent chapters defending his ministry and his suffering; now ( 2 Corinthians 6:14–7:1) he shifts to a hard, practical appeal: don't yoke yourselves to what's incompatible with who you are. Christians have long debated exactly what "unequal yoke" and "come out from among them" mean practically — some read it as a call to separate from unbelieving marriage or business partners, others as a warning specifically against pagan temple worship and its immorality. The text itself doesn't spell out every application — only the principle.

Paul wrote this letter to the church in Corinth sometime around AD 55–56, likely from Macedonia, in the thick of a messy, painful relationship with a congregation he'd planted himself. Corinth was a booming Roman port city, rebuilt about a century earlier, packed with transplants, merchants, and — crucially — temples. Not one god, dozens: Aphrodite, Apollo, Asclepius, the Roman imperial cult. Public life in Corinth ran through these temples. Business deals were sealed with a sacrifice. Guild dinners happened in temple dining rooms. Turning down an invitation to eat meat offered to an idol wasn't a private religious scruple — it could cost you your business contacts, your social standing, even your family relationships.

So when Paul asks what agreement the temple of God can have with idols, he's not raising a theoretical question for people who'd never see an idol. He's talking to Christians who walked past temples on the way to buy bread, who had neighbors and in-laws still worshiping there, who felt the daily pull to just go along to get along. The image of an idol in God's temple wasn't abstract to a Jewish reader either — it evoked the horror of 1 Samuel 5:2-4, where the Philistines set the Ark of the Covenant next to the statue of their god Dagon, and Dagon toppled over and broke Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Two gods sharing one house was always a disaster story.

Paul is also picking up language he knows his readers — many of them Gentile converts, but taught from the Greek Old Testament — would recognize: God's ancient promise to dwell among his people, first given at Sinai, repeated through Leviticus, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel as Israel kept failing and God kept promising to try again.

συγκατάθεσις (synkatáthesis, G4783) — "agreement, accord." The word pictures two parties depositing the same verdict, like signing beneath the same line Strong's. Paul isn't asking whether idols and God's temple should get along; he's saying there's no shared ground on which they even could.

ναός (naós, G3485) — "temple, shrine." This word specifically points to the inner sanctuary, the dwelling place itself, not the surrounding courtyards Strong's. When Paul says "we are the naos," he's not saying Christians are the parking lot of God's house — you are the room where he lives.

εἴδωλον (eídōlon, G1497) — "idol, image." Rooted in the word for outward appearance or form Strong's, it names something that looks like a god but is only a shape, a projection, hollow at the center. Paul's contrast is deliberately brutal: the living God (záō, G2198, "to live") versus a carved nothing.

ζάω (záō, G2198) — "to live." This modifies "God" here — the living God — and it's not decorative. Every other god in Corinth's skyline was a statue: stone, bronze, silent. The whole force of Paul's argument rests on the difference between a God who breathes and moves among his people and gods that have to be carried, dusted, and propped back up when they fall over.

μετά (metá, G3326) — "with, among." Used in "dwell with them" and echoing "walk among them," it signals nearness, presence in the middle of a crowd, not observation from a distance Strong's.

This whole verse is really an echo chasing a fulfillment across a thousand years. God kept saying to Israel, over and over — at Sinai, in Leviticus 26:12, through Jeremiah, through Ezekiel — "I will dwell among you." And over and over, Israel's history shows that promise straining against human failure: God's presence came and went, the temple was built, defiled, destroyed, rebuilt, defiled again.

Then John writes, in the prologue of his Gospel, that "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us" — using a Greek word that literally means "pitched his tent," the same picture as God's presence in the wilderness tabernacle. Jesus is where the ancient promise stops being a hope and becomes a body you could touch. He himself says in John 2:19-21 that he is the temple — destroy this one, and in three days he'll raise it. The presence of God that used to require a building now has a face.

And here's what Paul is doing in this verse: he's saying that because of Jesus — because he died and rose and sent his Spirit — that same indwelling presence has now moved into you, into the church, into ordinary believers meeting in someone's house in Corinth. Paul makes the identical move in 1 Corinthians 6:19, telling the same church their individual bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. The promise doesn't stop with Jesus as a lone dwelling place; it flows out from him into everyone joined to him.

And it isn't finished yet. Revelation 21:3 takes this exact same covenant formula — "they will be his people, and God himself will be with them" — and moves it to the very last page of the story, where the dwelling becomes permanent, unbroken, forever. This verse in 2 Corinthians is a down payment on that ending.

Here's the part that's easy to skip past: Paul isn't writing this to scold pagans. He's writing to Christians who already believe, who already know the promise, and who are still quietly, casually letting incompatible things into the house. That's the uncomfortable edge of this verse for you today — not "don't worship statues," but "what have you signed onto that God can't sign onto with you?"

You probably don't have a shrine in your living room. But ask honestly: what are you making agreements with that God has no part of? A relationship you know is pulling you away from him. A version of success you're chasing that requires you to compromise what you actually believe. A pattern of numbing out, scrolling, drinking, working — anything you run to instead of running to him. Paul's language is blunt on purpose: agreement, or none. Not a little agreement. Not "mostly faithful." Because the temple isn't a museum you visit on Sundays — it's where you live, and it can't have two gods in it without one of them toppling, the way Dagon toppled in front of the ark Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

But don't miss the tenderness buried in the warning. God isn't just issuing a rule; he's making a promise: I will dwell with you. I will walk among you. I will be your God, you will be my people. That's not distant landlord language — that's marriage language, family language. He wants to live in you, not just visit. The cost this verse asks of you is real: it might mean walking away from something you love that can't coexist with him. But what you're being asked to make room for is the actual, living presence of God taking up permanent residence in you. That's not a fair trade — it's an absurdly good one.

• Lord, show me honestly what I've let sit alongside you in my heart that doesn't belong there.
• Thank you that you don't just visit me — you have chosen to dwell in me and walk among me every day.
• Give me courage to walk away from the agreements I've made that put you and something else on the same throne.
• Help me actually believe I am your temple, and treat my life — my body, my time, my attention — like the holy ground it is.
• Finish in me what you started: make me wholly yours, without divided loyalty.

• If someone watched your calendar, your wallet, and your search history for a month, what would they conclude you actually worship?
• What's one "idol" in your life right now that you've stopped calling by that name because it's become so familiar?
• Where in your life are you trying to keep God and something incompatible both comfortably in the same room?
• Does it feel more true to you that God tolerates you, or that he actually wants to live in you? What would change if you believed the second one?
• What would it cost you, specifically, to "come out" from one compromised agreement this week?
