II Corinthians 13:5

Paul is winding up a hard letter to a church that has been questioning whether he's even a real apostle. So he flips the script: instead of them putting him on trial, he tells them to put themselves on trial. "Examine yourselves... test yourselves" — two different Greek words, but both are the language of the assay office, of holding metal up to fire and acid to see if it's really silver or just something painted to look like it Adam Clarke. The plain claim: don't ask "is Paul a real apostle?" Ask "am I really in the faith at all?"

Then comes the sting — "Can't you see for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you — unless you actually fail the test?" The word translated "fail the test" (adokimos, related to that same testing vocabulary) means disqualified, like a coin that doesn't pass inspection Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Paul isn't threatening them with some new bar to clear. He's saying: if Christ genuinely lives in you, that will be evident — you'll be able to see it. The absence of any visible Christ-shaped life in you isn't a small problem; it's the test itself, and it's one you can fail.

Easy to miss: Paul isn't primarily worried about their doctrine here, though the Corinthians did have false teachers stirring up trouble. He's asking about the presence of a Person — "Jesus Christ is in you" — not just correct beliefs about a person. This is relational, not just intellectual. The Corinthians wanted proof that Christ spoke through Paul (13:3); Paul says the sturdier proof is right inside them, if they'll look John Gill.

This verse sits near the very end of Paul's most painful, most personal letter — after chapters of defending his ministry against accusations, he ends not by demanding they trust him, but by demanding they examine themselves. Christians disagree on how far to push "unless you fail the test" — some read it as a live warning that someone can look saved and not be; others stress Paul expects the answer to be an obvious "of course Christ is in us," making this rhetorical, not a doubt-inducing threat.

Paul wrote 2 Corinthians around AD 55–56, likely from Macedonia (northern Greece), to the church he had planted in Corinth a few years earlier. Corinth was a booming Roman port city — wealthy, status-obsessed, full of traveling philosophers and rhetoricians who competed for followers with polished speaking and impressive credentials. Into that world came a group of rival teachers — Paul sarcastically calls them "super-apostles" earlier in this letter ( 2 Corinthians 11:5) — who showed up in Corinth with better speaking skills, letters of recommendation, and swagger, and started convincing the church that Paul, by comparison, was weak, unimpressive, even fraudulent.

By the time Paul writes chapter 13, this is his third piece of correspondence dealing with the conflict (he mentions a painful visit and a severe letter earlier in the letter, in 2 Corinthians 2:1-4). The relationship is raw. The Corinthians have effectively been auditing Paul, demanding he prove his authority, prove that Christ really speaks through him. Paul has spent twelve chapters defending himself — sometimes with painful sarcasm ( 2 Corinthians 11:16-21), sometimes with genuine anguish ( 2 Corinthians 12:14-15) — because he loves this church and can't bear to see them swept off by people offering an easier, showier version of Christianity.

So when he reaches verse 5, he's had enough of being the one on trial. He turns the courtroom around. If you want proof of genuine faith, he says, stop cross-examining me and start examining yourselves. This wasn't an abstract theological exercise for them — it was urgent, because a real fracture in the church, over real teachers preaching a different gospel, was in progress. Paul is about to visit them a third time ( 2 Corinthians 13:1), and he wants them to have done this hard, honest inward work before he arrives, so that when he comes, he doesn't have to be as severe as he fears he'll need to be ( 2 Corinthians 13:10).

Paul uses two words that both mean "test," and the overlap is the whole point. πειράζω (peirázō, G3985) means to test or scrutinize something — the same word used for testing metal or testing a person's resolve Strong's. Then δοκιμάζω (dokimázō, G1381) means to test with a view to approving something — think of an assayer checking a coin, expecting (hoping) it passes Strong's. Paul stacks these together: "Test yourselves (peirazete), approve yourselves (dokimazete)" — don't just probe, expect to find something genuine there.

That second word's negative form shows up at the end of the verse: ἀδόκιμος would be "unapproved, failing the test" — a disqualified coin, rejected metal Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. It's the same root as dokimázō. Paul is playing on this word throughout — you wanted to "test" (dokimē) my authority; well, test yourselves and see if you're "approved" (dokimos) or "disqualified" (adokimos).

The other key phrase is ἐν ὑμῖν — "Christ is in you." The preposition ἐν (en, G1722) signals fixed position, a relation of rest — not Christ passing by or speaking occasionally, but Christ residing Strong's. And notice the verb for "recognize" — ἐπιγινώσκω (epiginṓskō, G1921) means more than a bare "know"; it's to fully know, to recognize a mark you'd been looking at all along Strong's. Paul's confidence is that if you look honestly, the mark of Christ's presence isn't hidden — it's recognizable, like a signature you'd know if you actually looked at the page.

The whole force of this verse rests on one staggering claim: Christ doesn't just forgive you and leave — he moves in. Paul says the same thing more personally in Galatians 2:20: "I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." Jesus himself promised this before he ever went to the cross: "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him" ( John 14:23). That word "home" isn't a metaphor for a warm feeling — it's the language of permanent residence. The test Paul gives the Corinthians only makes sense because of a real, historical event: Jesus died, rose, and now by his Spirit actually indwells the people who trust him.

So this verse isn't really about the Corinthians' willpower or performance. It's about whether the resurrected Christ has taken up residence in them — which means the real subject of the test isn't you, it's him. Can you see the marks of his life growing in yours: love where there was selfishness, humility where there was pride, endurance where there would have been collapse? If so, that's not your achievement to boast in — it's evidence that he's really there, doing what only a living, present Christ can do.

And notice what Paul does not say: he doesn't tell the Corinthians to work up more faith by trying harder. He tells them to look for a Person who is already there if they belong to him. This is the same gospel logic behind the whole letter — Paul's authority, and their assurance, both rest not on human credentials but on the crucified and risen Christ actually present and active. The test is severe, but the hope underneath it is enormous: the goal was never to catch you failing, but to help you find him already at home in you.

Here's the uncomfortable thing about this verse: Paul assumes self-examination isn't optional for a Christian, and he assumes it's possible to get the answer wrong. Not everyone who says the right words, sits in the right pew, or has the right theology has Christ actually living in them. That should unsettle you a little. It unsettled me the first time I really sat with it.

But notice the shape of the test Paul gives. He doesn't say, "Examine your church attendance" or "Examine your theological accuracy" — though those aren't nothing. He says: look for Christ in you. Is there evidence, in the actual texture of your life, that someone other than you is now living there? Not perfection — Paul knew these Corinthians were a mess, still fighting and comparing and doubting — but a real, growing, sometimes-stumbling evidence that Jesus has moved in and is doing something.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty. Not the performative kind where you list your sins to sound humble, but the real kind, where you stop dressing up your spiritual life for other people (or for God, as if he needs the show) and actually look. Where is the fruit? Where is the love that costs you something? Where is the change that you didn't manufacture yourself? And where is there... nothing — just habit, just culture, just words you've said so many times they've gone numb?

Don't run from this test. Paul isn't writing to terrify sincere believers into doubting a Christ who is genuinely present. He's writing to wake up people who've been coasting on assumptions. If you look honestly and find him there — messy, unfinished, but there — that's not pride, that's worship. Let it drive you to your knees in gratitude, not up on a pedestal.

• Where my faith has become habit or performance instead of a real relationship with you, wake me up.
• Show me the specific fruit of your presence in me — even if it's small — so I can thank you instead of doubting you.
• Give me courage to look at the parts of my life I'd rather not examine.
• If there is anything in me that would fail this test, don't let me stay comfortable there — bring me to real repentance.

• If someone watched your actual daily life for a month — not your words, your life — would they see evidence that Christ lives in you?
• What's one area where you've been assuming you're fine spiritually without ever actually checking?
• Where do you rely on other people's approval of your faith instead of asking Christ himself the hard question?
• Is there a habit, attitude, or relationship you'd have to change if you took this verse seriously today?
• When you imagine "failing the test" Paul describes, does that thought produce fear, denial, or genuine self-examination in you — and what does that reaction tell you?
