I Corinthians 6:19

Paul starts with a question that's really a slap on the shoulder: "Do you not know?" — as if to say, come on, I already told you this. He'd said it back in 1 Corinthians 3:16, but there it was about the whole church together, all of you as a group, one temple. Here he narrows the lens: your body, singular, individual, the one you're sitting in right now. That's the easy-to-miss shift — this isn't just "the church is holy," it's "your actual body, the one you feed and clothe and use for sex and sleep and everything else, is holy ground" Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

The word "temple" isn't picked at random. In the ancient world, a temple was the one place on earth where a god was said to actually live — not just be worshiped, but reside. Paul is saying the Holy Spirit doesn't just visit you or inspire you from a distance; he moves in. And this Spirit is a gift — "whom you have received from God" — not something you earned or generated, but something given to you, the way you'd receive a house key from someone who trusts you with the place.

Then comes the gut-punch: "You are not your own." In a culture (like ours) that treats "my body, my choice" as close to sacred law, this is a direct collision. Paul isn't denying you have real agency — he's denying that you're the final owner. You're the resident, not the landlord.

This verse sits inside Paul's argument against sexual immorality ( 1 Corinthians 6:12–20) — he's just spent several verses saying sex isn't a private, morally neutral act, because your body is joined to Christ himself (6:15) Matthew Henry. Christians have long agreed this means the body matters to God, full stop — no gnostic "just save the soul" theology allowed. Where they've disagreed is how far the ownership language reaches into practical ethics (food, medicine, tattoos, end-of-life choices) — Paul's own target here is narrower: sexual sin — but the principle "you're not your own" has been extended, carefully or not, to many other questions since.

Paul wrote this letter to the church in Corinth around AD 53–55, probably from Ephesus, a few years after he'd planted the church there. Corinth was a booming Roman trade city — rebuilt by Julius Caesar a century earlier, packed with merchants, sailors, freed slaves who'd made good, and temple prostitution tied to the worship of Aphrodite. It was also famously loose sexually; "to Corinthianize" was practically ancient slang for living it up with prostitutes. The believers in this church weren't isolated monks — they were ordinary people who'd grown up assuming that what you did with your body, especially sexually, had nothing to do with your spiritual life. Food was for the stomach, sex was for the body, religion was for the soul — that was the common wisdom, and some Corinthian Christians were quoting exactly that logic to Paul as an excuse (you can see him quoting their slogan back at them in 6:13).

Into that world, Paul drops a bomb: your body isn't a separate compartment from your spiritual life. It's not just yours to use as you like because "it's just physical." He reaches for the most sacred image his readers — Jewish and Gentile alike — could understand: the temple. Every Corinthian knew what a temple was, because the city was full of them, gleaming buildings where a god supposedly lived and where sacred prostitutes sometimes served. Paul flips that picture on its head: the true God doesn't live in a marble building in the city center anymore — since Pentecost ( Acts 2), he lives inside ordinary believers, by his Spirit. That was a staggering, almost scandalous claim to make about a bunch of ex-pagan tradesmen and freedwomen in a Roman port city.

The key word is ναός (naós, G3485) — "temple." Greek actually had two words for temple: hieron, the whole sacred complex with its courts and outer buildings, and naós, the inner sanctuary — the one room where the god's presence actually dwelt, the holy of holies. Paul picks naós on purpose Strong's. He's not saying your body is the parking lot around God's house. He's saying it's the inner room, the place where the presence itself resides.

πνεῦμα ἅγιον (pneûma hágios, G4151 + G40) — "Holy Spirit." Pneûma originally just meant wind or breath, something you can't see but you can feel moving Strong's. That's not an accident either — the Spirit is invisible, but he's not vague or abstract; he's as real and active in you as breath moving through your lungs.

Notice the verb ἔχω (échō, G2192), "to have, to hold, to possess" — Paul writes "whom you have (ἔχω) from God." The Spirit isn't something you achieved or worked up; he's something you were given and now hold, the way you'd hold something on loan, not something you manufactured Strong's.

And σῶμα (sōma, G4983) — "body." Paul uses this word constantly in this passage, and it matters that he doesn't say "your soul" or "your spirit" is the temple. He says sōma — flesh, muscle, appetite, the thing you can bruise and feed and exhaust. That's the part he insists belongs to God.

This whole idea — God's presence living in a body — finds its hinge point in Jesus. When religious leaders asked Jesus for a sign, he said, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days," and John tells us plainly: "But Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body" ( John 2:21). Before the Spirit ever moved into your body, God the Son moved into a body — his own — and made human flesh the meeting place between heaven and earth in a way no stone building ever could.

So when Paul tells the Corinthians "your body is a temple," he's not inventing a metaphor out of nowhere — he's extending what happened in Jesus outward to everyone joined to him. Because Christ's body was broken and raised, and because his Spirit was poured out (which Paul has already tied together back in 3:16 and will again in 2 Corinthians 6:16), ordinary bodies like yours become places where God dwells. You didn't earn this access — Jesus purchased it. Paul makes that explicit a few verses earlier in this same chapter: "you were bought at a price" ( 1 Corinthians 6:20), and Titus 2:14 says he "gave Himself for us to redeem us... and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession." The ownership Paul talks about here — "you are not your own" — isn't abstract theology. It's the direct legal and relational result of a purchase Jesus made with his own blood.

So the line runs: Jesus is the temple in flesh → Jesus dies and rises, his body torn and rebuilt → his Spirit is poured into those who trust him → your body becomes, by union with him, a small outpost of that same presence. You are not a separate project from Jesus. You are, in Paul's picture, part of the same building.

Here's what this verse won't let you do: treat your body like a rental car. You know how people drive rental cars — a little rougher than they'd drive their own, because it's not really theirs, no long-term consequences, just return it and walk away. A lot of us live in our bodies that way. Feed it garbage, run it on no sleep, use it for whatever feels good tonight, because hey, it's mine, my choice, my business.

Paul says: no. It was never just yours. Someone paid for it, and someone lives in it. That's either the most comforting sentence you'll read all week or the most confronting one, depending on what you were planning to do with your body tonight.

This isn't only — or even mainly — about sex, though that's Paul's specific target here. It's about the quiet, everyday ways you might treat your body as raw material for your own agenda: numbing it, overworking it, starving it, punishing it, using it to get attention or approval or pleasure with no regard for who's actually living inside it. The cost this verse asks of you is real ownership transfer. Not "I'll try to be healthier" — that's still you managing your own property. It's "this isn't mine to manage on my own terms anymore."

And here's the comfort buried in the confrontation: you're not a temple because you're impressive or pure or have it together. Every Corinthian Paul wrote to had a past — verse 11 of this same chapter says "such were some of you" before listing sins that would make you blush. The temple isn't built because you're clean. You're made clean because God decided to move in anyway. That's not permission to live carelessly with your body — it's the reason you'd want to guard it like something sacred, because it already is.

• Lord, thank You that You didn't just forgive me from a distance — You actually came to live in me by Your Spirit. Help me feel the weight of that today.
• Search me and show me the places where I treat my body like it's mine alone to use — in what I watch, what I do with it, how I feed it or punish it.
• I confess the areas where I've quietly told myself "it's my choice, my body, my business." I bring that back under Your ownership right now.
• Give me the same reverence for my own body that I'd have walking into a holy place — because that's exactly what You say it is.
• Thank You that I was bought at a price. Teach me to live like someone who knows he was purchased, not someone still negotiating ownership.
