I Corinthians 5:11

Look at what Paul actually does here: he clarifies himself. Earlier in this letter he'd told the Corinthians not to associate with "sexually immoral people" (v.9), and apparently they'd taken that to mean anyone out in the pagan world who lived that way — which would be impossible, since you'd have to leave the planet to avoid such people (v.10). So Paul narrows the target: "But now I am writing you..." — he's correcting a misreading, not adding a new rule Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. The word that carries the whole verse is "claims to be a brother" — this isn't about outsiders at all. It's about someone sitting in the pew who calls himself a Christian while living in open, unrepentant sin.

Then Paul lists six categories: sexually immoral, greedy, idolater, verbal abuser, drunkard, swindler. Notice the mix — this isn't just sexual sin. Greed and idolatry sit right next to sexual immorality, and "verbal abuser" (someone who tears people down with their mouth) sits right next to drunkenness. Paul is not building a hierarchy of "acceptable" versus "unacceptable" sins; he's naming a pattern of life that has become someone's identity, whatever the specific vice.

The command that lands hardest: "do not even eat" with such a person. In that world, table fellowship was not casual — sharing a meal meant sharing your life, your trust, your name. Paul isn't asking for a mild social distance; he's asking the church to withhold the deepest sign of belonging.

This verse sits inside Paul dealing with a specific, scandalous case — a man sleeping with his father's wife, and the church proud of its "tolerance" instead of grieving ( 1 Corinthians 5:1-2). Christians have long disagreed on how far this extends practically — Catholic and Orthodox traditions tend to tie this to formal church discipline and access to the sacraments, while many Protestant traditions apply it more broadly to personal fellowship and accountability — but nearly everyone agrees the aim isn't cruelty. It's love that refuses to let sin pretend it's fine Tyndale.

Paul wrote this letter to the church in Corinth around AD 53-55, probably from Ephesus, a few years into a relationship he'd built by planting that church himself ( Acts 18). Corinth was a booming Roman trade city — a rebuilt boomtown full of new money, mixed populations, and a reputation across the empire for sexual permissiveness (the Greek verb "to Corinthianize" literally meant to live loosely). Into that world, a small band of former pagans had become Christians, meeting in house churches, eating shared meals together (the "love feast") that led into the Lord's Supper.

The problem Paul is responding to: this church had somehow convinced itself that grace meant total tolerance. A man was sleeping with his stepmother — a relationship so scandalous that even the pagans around them were shocked by it ( 1 Corinthians 5:1) — and instead of grieving, the church was "proud" of how open-minded they were being (5:2). Paul had apparently already sent an earlier letter (now lost to us) telling them not to associate with sexually immoral people, and they'd twisted that into an absurd rule about avoiding all immoral people in Corinth generally — which, in a city like Corinth, meant avoiding basically everyone Matthew Henry. So Paul writes again to clarify: the line isn't drawn against the pagan city outside; it's drawn inside the church, against anyone who wears the name "brother" while refusing to repent.

This matters because in the ancient world, a shared meal was a covenant act — you didn't eat with just anyone. Households, guilds, and religious groups defined themselves by who sat at the table. So when Paul says "do not even eat" with such a person, he's using the most socially loaded gesture available to him to make an unmistakable point.

The pivot word is συναναμίγνυμι (synanamígnymi, G4874) — "to mix up together, to associate with." Strong's It's a compound word, literally something like "mix-up-with," and Paul uses it to describe the kind of close, blended-together social life the Corinthians were still having with an unrepentant "brother." He's not telling them to avoid eye contact — he's telling them to stop mixing their lives with this person's.

Notice the qualifier tucked into the sentence: ἀδελφός (adelphós, G80), "brother." Strong's This is the hinge the whole verse turns on. Paul isn't talking about pagans; he's talking about someone who ὀνομάζω (onomázō, G3687) — "is named, called, professes" — to be a brother. Strong's The verb carries the sense of a title someone claims for himself, a label he wears. Paul's whole point is that the label and the life have come apart.

The list of vices is worth a glance too: πόρνος (pórnos, G4205), someone habitually given to sexual immorality; πλεονέκτης (pleonéktēs, G4123), literally "one who holds more" — a person driven by greed, always grabbing; εἰδωλολάτρης (eidōlolátrēs, G1496), an idol-worshipper. Strong's These aren't words for a single slip or a bad week — the -της (-tēs) ending on several of them marks a type of person, someone characterized by the practice, not someone who stumbled once and grieved over it. That distinction is everything: Paul isn't asking the church to shun sinners (that would empty every pew), he's asking them not to pretend that an entrenched, defended, unrepentant pattern of life is compatible with the name "brother."

It would be easy to read this verse as pure law — cold, exclusionary, un-Christlike. But look at what it's actually protecting. Two verses later Paul quotes the Old Testament's language for cutting sin out of Israel's camp — "expel the wicked man from among you" ( 1 Corinthians 5:13, echoing Deuteronomy passages about purging evil from the community). The church, for Paul, is meant to be a picture of something real: a people who have actually been changed, not just a crowd wearing a label. And the reason that matters is the cross just a few verses earlier: "Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" ( 1 Corinthians 5:7). Jesus didn't die so his people could keep living exactly like before with a new name tag. He died to actually free people from these very things — sexual sin, greed, idolatry — and Paul's whole letter to the Ephesians makes the same list ( Ephesians 5:5) precisely because the gospel is supposed to produce a different kind of life, not just a different set of beliefs.

Here's the deeper mercy hiding in this hard verse: withholding fellowship isn't the opposite of grace — in the New Testament's mind, it's meant to be one of grace's last, desperate tools. Paul tells the Corinthians elsewhere to hand a man "over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved" ( 1 Corinthians 5:5) — the goal is always restoration, never abandonment. Jesus himself gives the church this exact playbook in Matthew 18:15-17: confront, plead, and if there's no repentance, treat the person as an outsider — precisely so the shock might wake them up and bring them home. That's the shepherd's heart underneath the discipline: Jesus who leaves the ninety-nine for the one ( Luke 15:4) is the same Jesus who lets a wandering sheep feel the cold, because sometimes that's the only thing that turns it back toward the fold.

This verse is going to make you flinch, and it should. It's not comfortable to imagine actually withdrawing table fellowship from someone who calls themselves a Christian friend, coworker, family member. But sit with what Paul is actually protecting: the meaning of the word "brother." If anyone can claim that name while living however they want, with no expectation that the label costs them anything, then the word has stopped meaning anything at all — and so has the gospel that gave rise to it.

Here's where it gets personal, though, and Paul would want you to feel this before you feel anything about anyone else: this verse isn't first a tool for judging other people's sin lists. It's a mirror. Where in your own life have you started calling yourself a Christian while quietly building a permanent, defended arrangement with greed, or a grudge you nurse with your mouth, or a private habit you have no intention of surrendering? The list Paul gives — sexual immorality, greed, idolatry, verbal cruelty, drunkenness, swindling — isn't a rogues' gallery of "worse people." It's a checklist of ordinary respectable sins that a church can learn to live comfortably next to.

The cost this verse asks of you is real: it might mean an uncomfortable conversation with someone you love, refusing to pretend their unrepentant pattern of life is fine just to keep the peace. Or it might mean letting someone else's honest word to you land, instead of getting defensive. Love, in this verse, doesn't look like endless tolerance. It looks like refusing to lie to someone about where their life is actually headed — because you'd rather have them uncomfortable and repentant than comfortable and lost.
