I Corinthians 13:13

Paul is closing out one of the most famous paragraphs he ever wrote, and this verse is the landing pad. He's just spent thirteen verses arguing that spiritual gifts — speaking in tongues, prophecy, deep knowledge — are wonderful but temporary. They're built for a world that isn't finished yet, like scaffolding on a building. Verse 13 pulls back and says: okay, when the scaffolding comes down, what's left standing? Three things: faith, hope, and love.

The word "remain" (μένω, ménō, G4102 — actually the verb is menō, "to stay, abide, stick around") Strong's is doing real work here. Paul isn't saying faith, hope, and love are just nice ideas — he's saying they outlast everything flashier. Prophecies will stop. Tongues will cease. Knowledge will be swallowed up by direct sight. But these three keep standing.

Then comes the twist most readers skip past: "the greatest of these is love." Why love and not faith, which is how you get saved in the first place? Here's where Christians read it differently. Some (echoing Jamieson-Fausset-Brown) point out that faith will one day give way to sight, and hope will give way to having the thing you hoped for — but love never becomes obsolete, because love isn't a placeholder for something better, it is the something better Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Others go further and say love is greatest because it's literally what God is ( 1 John 4:8) — faith and hope describe your posture toward God, but love describes his very nature, and yours becomes an echo of his Tyndale. Either way, the sentence isn't ranking Christian virtues like a trophy case. It's telling you what Christianity is actually for.

This verse sits at the hinge of Paul's letter to a church that was drunk on spiritual showmanship — chapter 14 immediately pivots back to regulating tongues and prophecy in light of this very principle.

Paul wrote 1 Corinthians from Ephesus around AD 53–55, to a church he had planted a few years earlier in Corinth — a booming Roman trade city in Greece, famous (and infamous) for its wealth, its temples, and its taste for status. Corinth was the kind of place where people competed publicly for honor: who had the better rhetorician, the flashier patron, the more impressive résumé.

That competitive culture had leaked straight into the church. The Corinthian believers were ranking each other by spiritual gifts the way you'd rank status symbols — tongues seem to have been treated as the premier gift, proof you'd really "arrived" spiritually. Paul spends chapters 12–14 correcting this. Chapter 12 says the gifts are like parts of one body, not a leaderboard. Chapter 13 — this famous "love chapter" — was never meant to be read at weddings divorced from its context; it's actually a pointed rebuke to a church using spiritual gifts to outdo one another Matthew Henry. You can have the flashiest gift in the room, Paul says, and be nothing without love. Then he ends the argument with verse 13: gifts are temporary tools for an unfinished world; faith, hope, and love are permanent furniture. This wasn't abstract theology to the Corinthians — it was a direct challenge to reorganize their entire pecking order around love instead of spectacle.

The verb translated "remain," μένω (ménō, G3306), means to stay put, to stick around, to not budge Strong's. Paul uses it elsewhere for things that endure testing ( 1 Corinthians 3:14) — it's a word about durability, not decoration. It's the quiet backbone of the verse: everything else in the chapter has been failing, ceasing, passing away (v.8), and then this one verb shows up to say — but these three don't.

πίστις (pístis, G4102) is "faith" — but the Strong's definition widens it out: persuasion, moral conviction, reliance, constancy Strong's. It's not a warm feeling; it's weight-bearing trust, the kind you'd put your whole body on.

ἐλπίς (elpís, G1680) is "hope" — but not wishful thinking. The definition given is "expectation... or confidence" Strong's. Biblical hope isn't crossing your fingers; it's leaning forward into something you're sure is coming.

ἀγάπη (agápē, G26) is "love" — defined as affection or benevolence, and interestingly the Strong's note adds "specially (plural) a love-feast," pointing to how early Christians used this word for the shared meals where the whole community ate together regardless of status Strong's. That's a clue: agápē was never a private, sentimental word in this context. It was communal, costly, table-sharing love.

Finally, μείζων (meízōn, G3187), "greater," is a comparative — Paul isn't saying the other two don't matter, he's ranking them while keeping all three standing Strong's.

This verse is really a description of who God is before it's a description of what you should do. John writes plainly, "God is love" ( 1 John 4:8) — not "God is loving," as one attribute among many, but love as his very substance. If that's true, then verse 13 isn't handing you three equally weighted virtues to balance. It's telling you that faith and hope are your reaching toward God, and love is what you find when you get there — because it's what he is, and it's what he does.

And you don't have to guess what that love looks like in practice, because Paul already painted the picture two verses earlier using the same word — patient, kind, not self-seeking, keeps no record of wrongs ( 1 Corinthians 13:4-7) — and then the Gospels show you a man living out every line of it. The love that "does not seek its own" walked to a cross for people who were mocking him while he hung there. The love that "bears all things" carried the weight of every sin ever committed without flinching. Jesus is not just an example of this love; he's its source and its proof — "God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" ( Romans 5:8).

Faith and hope, too, find their target in him: your faith isn't generic religious confidence, it's reliance on Christ specifically for salvation, and your hope isn't vague optimism, it's the sure expectation of resurrection because he was raised first ( 1 Corinthians 15:20). Paul elsewhere calls this "Christ in you, the hope of glory" ( Colossians 1:27) — hope isn't just a feeling about the future, it's a Person already living in you. So when Paul says love is greatest, he's quietly pointing past the virtue itself to the God who is the virtue, made visible in Jesus.

Here's the uncomfortable part: it would be easier if Paul had said the greatest thing is your theology, or your church attendance, or how many Bible verses you can quote, or how strong your faith feels on a good day. Instead he says the measuring stick is love — the slow, unglamorous, often invisible work of actually being patient with the person who annoys you, actually forgiving the person who hurt you, actually showing up for someone who can't pay you back.

That's a cost, not a compliment. It's easy to have faith in private — nobody sees whether you really trust God at 2 a.m. It's easy to have hope in private too. But love is almost never private. It gets tested in traffic, at the dinner table, in the group chat, with the coworker who takes credit for your work. You can have impeccable doctrine and still fail this verse every single day.

So ask yourself honestly: if someone graded your last week by 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, not by your beliefs but by your actual behavior toward actual people — patient? kind? not easily angered? — what would the grade be? Faith and hope are real and necessary; don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But they're aimed at love the way an arrow is aimed at a target. If your faith isn't producing love, something's gone sideways ( Galatians 5:6 says exactly this — faith works itself out through love). Today, this verse isn't asking you to feel more spiritual. It's asking you to love one specific, difficult, real person better than you did yesterday — and to let that cost you something.

• Lord, thank you that your love for me doesn't run out when my faith is weak or my hope is dim — teach me to rest in that.
• Show me the one person this week where my faith and hope haven't turned into love — and give me the courage to actually love them.
• Forgive me for the times I've used spiritual knowledge or gifts to feel superior instead of to serve.
• Grow in me a love that outlasts my moods — patient on the hard days, not just the easy ones.
• Let my hope in Christ's return make me more generous now, not more distracted from the people in front of me.

• Where have you let faith or hope become a substitute for love — orthodoxy without kindness, confidence about the future without patience today?
• Who in your life is hardest to love right now, and what specifically is stopping you?
• Do you actually believe love is "greatest," or does some other virtue — being right, being impressive, being safe — quietly outrank it in how you live?
• What would it cost you, this week, to love one difficult person the way 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 describes?
