Romans 4:17

Paul is in the middle of proving something that sounds almost too good to be true: that Abraham wasn't declared right with God because he earned it, but because he trusted God. Here he reaches back to Genesis 17:5, where God renames Abram ("exalted father") to Abraham ("father of many nations") — before Abraham had even one child by Sarah. That's the plain surface: God speaks a promise, and Paul quotes it as already settled fact.

Then Paul does something bold. He doesn't just say Abraham believed the promise — he says Abraham is our father "in the presence of God, in whom he believed." That little phrase "in whom he believed" is doing enormous work: Paul is describing exactly what kind of God Abraham trusted. Not a vague deity, but the specific God "who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist." That's not decoration — it's the whole argument. Abraham's body was as good as dead for fathering children, Sarah's womb was dead for bearing them (Paul says this explicitly a few verses later, Romans 4:19), so the only way the promise could come true was if God could speak dead things into life and non-existing things into existence Matthew Henry.

Easy to miss: this verse quietly redefines what "father of Abraham" means. It's not bloodline, it's not circumcision, it's not nationality — it's sharing Abraham's specific kind of trust in this specific kind of God. That's the hinge on which Paul's whole point about Gentiles being included swings (see Romans 3:29, which he's already argued). This sits right at the center of Romans 4, Paul's showcase chapter proving justification by faith apart from the law, using Abraham — the father of the Jewish nation — as exhibit A that it was always this way, even before the law existed. Protestants have long read this verse as the classic statement that faith, not works, is what God counts as righteousness; Catholic readers agree faith is essential here but stress (rightly, from the text of James 2) that this trusting faith is never meant to stay alone — it's the kind of faith that produces a life, the way it produced a child for Abraham.

Paul wrote Romans somewhere around 56–57 AD, most likely from Corinth, to a church he had never visited — a congregation in the capital of the empire made up of both Jewish and Gentile believers who were, frankly, a little suspicious of each other. Jewish Christians carried centuries of identity wrapped up in being physical children of Abraham, heirs of the covenant, keepers of the Law of Moses. Gentile Christians had no such pedigree — they were, in the language of 1 Peter 2:10, "once not a people." Rome itself had recently seen the emperor Claudius expel Jews from the city (around 49 AD) over disputes connected to Christian preaching, so this wasn't an abstract theological debate — it was a live, tender wound about who really belonged at the table.

Paul builds his case using Genesis, a book every Jewish reader in that Roman house-church would know cold. Abraham was the trump card in any Jewish argument about identity — God's covenant partner, the man circumcised, the one to whom the land and the nation were promised. So when Paul reaches back to Genesis 17:5, he's not picking a random Old Testament verse; he's grabbing the single most loaded name in Jewish self-understanding and showing that even that name was given on the basis of faith in God's promise, before Abraham did a single qualifying thing — before circumcision ( Genesis 17 records the promise and the covenant sign together, but Paul already argued in Romans 4:9-12 that righteousness was credited to Abraham back in Genesis 15, years earlier). Paul is dismantling the wall between Jew and Gentile brick by brick, using bricks his Jewish readers themselves had laid.

The line God speaks over Abraham uses πατήρ (patḗr, G3962) — "father" — combined with πολύς ἔθνος (polýs éthnos, G4183 + G1484), "many nations." Éthnos is the word that later becomes shorthand in the New Testament for "the Gentiles" — the pagan, non-Jewish nations Strong's. That's not incidental; Paul is leaning on the very word choice of Genesis to say: this was always about more than Israel.

The phrase "in the presence of" translates κατέναντι (katénanti, G2713) — literally "directly opposite" or "right in front of." Abraham isn't father in some legal fiction, filed away in heaven's paperwork — he stands, so to speak, face-to-face with God as the one recognized as father, and we are named as his children in that same courtroom, under the same gaze Strong's.

Then the two participles that carry the theological weight: ζωοποιέω (zōopoiéō, G2227) — "to make alive," to vitalize what's dead — and the verb behind "calls," built on τίθημι-family language of speaking things into place. Zōopoiéō is the same root used in John 5:21 for the Father raising the dead, and later in Romans 8:11 for the Spirit giving life to your own mortal body. Paul is not inventing new vocabulary for Abraham's God — he's using the resurrection word.

And νεκρός (nekrós, G3498), "dead" — used here of Abraham and Sarah's reproductive capacity, and elsewhere always of actual corpses Strong's. Paul wants you to feel the word's full weight: not "difficult," not "unlikely" — dead. The God Abraham trusted specializes in exactly that condition.

This verse is describing, almost word for word, what God will do at the empty tomb. "Gives life to the dead" is resurrection language before there's a resurrection to describe — Paul is using Easter vocabulary to talk about a ninety-nine-year-old man's body and Sarah's womb ( Hebrews 11:12 makes the same point: "from one man, and he as good as dead"). That's not an accident. The faith Abraham had — trusting a God who makes dead things live and calls nonexistent things into being — is the exact same faith the New Testament asks of you, except now it has a face and a name. Just two chapters later Paul will say that this righteousness "will be credited to us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead" ( Romans 4:24). Abraham trusted the God who could do this in theory. You're asked to trust the God who has already done it, in history, in Jerusalem, verified by witnesses.

Jesus himself claims exactly the power Paul attributes to the Father here — "the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes" ( John 5:21). The God of Genesis 17 who spoke a nation into being through a dead womb is the same God who, in Christ, speaks life into spiritually dead people (see the shadow of this in 1 Corinthians 1:28 — God choosing "the things that are not" to shame what is). And the "many nations" promised to Abraham finds its full harvest in the church — Jews and Gentiles together, adopted sons and daughters through faith in the risen Christ, exactly the argument Paul is building toward in Galatians 3:29. Abraham's story was never just about Abraham. It was a small preview, centuries early, of the resurrection gospel.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: what part of your life have you quietly declared dead? Not hypothetically dead — actually, functionally, "it's over, stop hoping" dead. A marriage. A prodigal child. A diagnosis. A dream you buried years ago because hoping hurt too much. Abraham's body and Sarah's womb were, in the plainest medical sense, incapable. Paul doesn't soften that. He wants you to sit in it.

And then he points you to the specific thing Abraham trusted — not that things would somehow work out, not vague optimism, but the character of a God whose specialty, whose actual job description, is bringing life out of what's dead and being out of what isn't. That's a very different kind of faith than "I hope it gets better." It's betting everything on who God is, when the evidence in front of you says otherwise.

The cost here is real: this kind of faith means giving up your right to demand a plausible explanation before you trust. Abraham didn't get a biology lesson explaining how a hundred-year-old man could have a son — he just kept believing the God who'd spoken to him, for years, with nothing changing except his age. That's costly. It means staying faithful in the waiting room without a guarantee of the outcome you want, on the strength of who's holding the promise, not on what you can currently see. Ask yourself honestly today: is there a "dead" place in your life you've stopped bringing to God because you've already decided the verdict? Bring it back to him. Not because you know how he'll fix it — but because you know who he is.

• Thank you for grafting people like me, who had no claim on Abraham's family, into his inheritance through faith alone.
• Give me patience in the waiting, the way you gave it to Abraham, without demanding the outcome before I'll believe you.

• What have you privately decided is "too dead" for God to touch — and why haven't you brought it to him lately?
• Do you actually believe God can call into being what doesn't exist yet, or has your prayer life quietly shrunk to only asking for things that already seem plausible?
• Where in your life are you resting your identity on pedigree, achievement, or credentials rather than on trust in God's promise, the way Paul says Abraham's true children do?
• If your faith required waiting years with zero visible change, like Abraham's did, would it survive?
• Who in your life do you view as "not belonging" the way some in Rome viewed the Gentiles — and does this verse challenge that?
