Acts 25:23

Look at what Luke is doing with his camera here. He slows down and lingers on the entrance — the doors swing open, and in walks Agrippa and Bernice "with great pomp," flanked by military commanders and the city's leading citizens. Then, almost like an afterthought, one short sentence: "And Festus ordered that Paul be brought in." The contrast is the whole point. Everything about this scene is staged for show — the Greek word behind "great pomp" is phantasia, the same root that gives us "fantasy" — a display meant to dazzle, not to reveal anything true Strong's. And then in walks a Roman prisoner in chains, a tentmaker from Tarsus, brought in by one flat command.

Here's what's easy to miss: this isn't actually a trial. Paul had already appealed to Caesar ( Acts 25:11-12), which legally removed the case from anyone in Caesarea's hands. Festus has no charge he can write down that makes sense ( Acts 25:26-27), so this whole royal audience is really a favor — Festus needs Agrippa, who actually knows Jewish law and custom, to help him figure out what to even put in the paperwork he sends to Rome Tyndale. So the grandest room in the chapter is built around a legal technicality. All the gold and title and swagger is theater surrounding a governor who's stuck.

This scene sits near the end of Paul's long series of hearings in Acts (chapters 21-26), the last stop before he sails for Rome. Where readers have sometimes disagreed is on how much irony Luke intends — some read this simply as historical color, others (rightly, I think) see Luke deliberately setting up the powerful and the powerless side by side so you can't miss which one actually matters.

Luke wrote Acts probably in the early-to-mid 60s AD, likely to a Roman official or patron named Theophilus, telling the story of how the message about Jesus spread from Jerusalem to Rome. This scene happens around 59-60 AD in Caesarea, the Roman administrative capital of Judea, in the audience hall of Herod's old palace — now used by the Roman governor Festus.

King Agrippa here is Herod Agrippa II, great-grandson of Herod the Great, ruler over a patchwork of territories to the north but with no real authority over Judea itself — Festus invites him purely as a courtesy and as an expert consultant on Jewish religious law. Bernice is his sister, and their relationship was scandalous enough that rumors of incest followed them throughout the empire; the Jewish historian Josephus and Roman writers both gossip about it. What makes the "great pomp" detail bite even harder is that this whole performance happens in the very city where their own father, Herod Agrippa I, died horribly — struck down and eaten by worms after accepting worship as a god ( Acts 12:21-23) Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Adam Clarke. Same family, same city, same pattern: dress up in splendor, forget you're mortal.

The "commanders" mentioned were the tribunes over the Roman cohorts stationed at Caesarea — the historian Josephus tells us five cohorts, roughly five thousand soldiers, were garrisoned there, so this is real military brass in the room, not junior officers Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. The "leading men of the city" would have been the wealthy Jewish and Gentile elite of Caesarea, a city itself built by Herod the Great as a monument to Roman power, complete with an artificial harbor and a temple to Caesar. Paul, meanwhile, has already been in custody for two years ( Acts 24:27), shuffled between governors, waiting. This is the world he's dragged into: robes, medals, rank, and a system that runs on who impresses whom.

The word that carries this whole verse is φαντασία (phantasía, G5325) — "with great pomp." Strong's defines it plainly as a "vain show" — literally an appearance, a display meant to be seen Strong's. It's related to the word for fantasy, and that's not an accident of translation into English — the Greek itself already carries the sense of something put on for effect, not something substantial underneath. Luke chose a word that quietly tells you: this is a costume, not reality.

Notice also σύν (sýn, G4862) and μετά (metá, G3326), both meaning "with" or "together," but Strong's distinguishes them carefully: sýn means close association, almost fused-together companionship, while metá is more like accompaniment, a looser "alongside" Strong's. Agrippa comes metá Bernice — together, side by side — and enters sýn the commanders — bound up with military power. The grammar itself pictures rank closing ranks around him.

Then there's ἀκροατήριον (akroatḗrion, G201) — "auditorium," which Strong's glosses simply as "an audience-room" Strong's. It comes from the word for "hearer." This is telling: it's not officially a courtroom (Paul's case is already headed to Caesar) — it's a room built for people to come and listen, for spectacle and curiosity. Even the architecture admits this isn't justice being done; it's a show being watched, exactly matching what John Gill and Adam Clarke both noticed about the scene John Gill Adam Clarke.

Years before this moment, when Jesus knocked Saul off his horse on the road to Damascus, he told Ananias exactly what this man was for: "This man is My chosen instrument to carry My name before the Gentiles and their kings, and before the people of Israel" ( Acts 9:15). Read Acts 25:23 with that sentence in your head and the scene changes completely. This isn't Paul being humiliated by power. This is prophecy landing, piece by piece — kings, commanders, city leaders, all gathered in one room, and Christ's own promise being kept in real time Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

And there's a deeper pattern underneath it, one that runs through the whole Bible: the true King doesn't need pomp to be King. Think of Jesus standing before Pilate — beaten, silent, no robe but the mocking purple one Roman soldiers threw on him for sport — while Pilate, wielding actual imperial authority, nervously asks him questions he can't answer. Rome had the auditorium, the guards, the show. Jesus had the truth. That same inversion happens here: Agrippa walks in with parade and title; Paul walks in in chains and carries the actual message that will outlast every one of these people's names. Nebuchadnezzar built Babylon "for the glory of my majesty" ( Daniel 4:30) and was humbled within the hour. Herod's own father died in that very city for accepting worship he didn't deserve. Pomp is what people build when they're afraid they're small. Paul, chained and unimpressive, is standing in the room as the one who actually knows the King of Kings personally — and it shows.

Here's the question this verse actually puts to you: which room are you dressing for?

You live in a world of phantasia — curated feeds, resumes, the version of your life you perform for other people to be impressed by. Agrippa and Bernice didn't think of themselves as villains that morning; they just thought "this is how important people show up." That's the trap. Pomp doesn't usually feel like sin from the inside. It feels like competence, like taste, like just doing things right. But underneath it, in this story, was a family that had already watched their own father die for exactly this instinct — and they didn't learn.

Meanwhile Paul walks into that same room with nothing to prove and nothing to protect. He's not performing. He's just there, chained, telling the truth, because he actually knows the God these powerful people are pretending to represent. That's what real confidence in Christ looks like from the outside — it often looks like having less, not more, of what a room like that expects you to have.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: stop building your case with décor. Whatever room you walk into today — a meeting, a family gathering, a church service — ask whether you're arriving as someone who needs the room to be impressed, or as someone who's simply carrying something true. You don't need great pomp. You need to actually know the King. Everything else is grass that withers by evening ( 1 Peter 1:24).

• Strip away my need for the room to be impressed with me; let me carry your truth instead of my image.
