Acts 10:38

Look at what Peter is doing here. He's standing in a Roman centurion's house — a Gentile's house, which no observant Jew would normally enter — and he's summarizing the entire ministry of Jesus in one breath: God anointed him, he went around doing good, he healed people trapped by the devil, and God was with him. That's the whole gospel story compressed into a single sentence.

Notice the order. God anoints first — before a single miracle happens, before Jesus preaches a word. The anointing (with the Holy Spirit and with power) is the source; the doing-good and healing are the fruit. Peter isn't saying Jesus earned power by being good. He's saying Jesus was equipped by God, and then the goodness flowed out of him like water out of a spring Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Easy to miss: "anointed" is loaded language. In Israel's history, you anointed prophets, priests, and kings — pouring oil on someone set them apart for God's work. Peter is quietly calling Jesus the Messiah — literally "the anointed one" — without even using the title, because his Gentile audience wouldn't yet have the categories for it Adam Clarke. He's translating Jewish theology into terms a Roman soldier can follow.

Also easy to miss: "healing all who were oppressed by the devil" isn't just a general statement about sickness. Peter is naming the real enemy behind human suffering — not just germs and disease, but a personal, hostile power holding people down. Every healing Jesus did was also a raid on enemy territory.

This verse sits inside Peter's sermon to Cornelius ( Acts 10:34–43), the hinge moment where the gospel breaks out of Jewish boundaries and reaches the non-Jewish world for the first time Matthew Henry. Christians have long debated when this anointing happened — some older interpreters (including several early church fathers) thought Peter meant Jesus was anointed at his conception, receiving the Spirit for personal holiness. Most interpreters since have read it as the baptism scene in Luke 3:22, where the Spirit descends visibly and publicly commissions him for his mission Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Acts was written by Luke, likely in the early-to-mid 60s AD, as the second half of a two-volume work (Luke-Acts) tracing the story from Jesus' birth to the gospel's spread across the Roman Empire. This scene takes place around 35-40 AD, just a few years after Jesus' resurrection, in Caesarea — a Roman administrative city on the coast of Israel, headquarters for the Roman governor and garrison troops.

Cornelius is a centurion in the Italian Regiment, a career Roman military officer commanding about a hundred men. He's what Jews called a "God-fearer" — a Gentile who worshiped the God of Israel, gave to the poor, and prayed regularly, but hadn't converted through circumcision and full adoption of Jewish law. For a Jewish man like Peter to walk into his house and eat with him was scandalous — Jewish purity customs treated Gentile homes as ritually contaminating. Peter only comes because God gave him a vision three times over, forcing him to reconsider what counted as "unclean" ( Acts 10:9-16).

So when Peter opens his mouth in verse 34, he starts by admitting he's had to relearn something: "God shows no favoritism." Then he gives Cornelius' household — a room full of Roman soldiers and their families who've probably never heard a synagogue sermon — a crash course in who Jesus was. He can't assume they know the Hebrew Scriptures, so he keeps it concrete: this man went around doing good, healing people, and God backed him up. It's the gospel stripped down to its bones for an audience starting from zero, similar to Peter's earlier sermon to fellow Jews in Acts 2:22, but reshaped for ears that have never heard of Moses or the prophets.

This moment matters enormously for the early church: it's the first recorded conversion of Gentiles apart from Jewish conversion first, and it forces the apostles to reckon — a few chapters later, at the Jerusalem council in Acts 15 — with whether Gentile believers need to become culturally Jewish to follow Jesus.

The key verb is χρίω (chríō, G5548) — "anointed." It literally means to rub or smear with oil, but its whole meaning is about being set apart and equipped for a job Strong's. This is the verb form behind the noun Christos — "Christ" isn't Jesus' last name, it's his title: the Anointed One. Peter is speaking the word "anointed" to Gentiles who've never heard "Messiah," so he's essentially explaining what "Christ" means without using the technical term.

Paired with it is πνεῦμα ἅγιον (pneuma hagion) — "Holy Spirit." Pneuma (G4151) originally just means wind or breath — something you can't see but whose effects are unmistakable Strong's. And δύναμις (dýnamis, G1411) means force or power — it's the word we get "dynamite" from, though don't picture explosions; picture raw capability, often specifically the power to work miracles Strong's. So Jesus wasn't just given a spiritual feeling — he was given operational power.

The verb for his activity, διέρχομαι (diérchomai, G1330), means to travel through, to go about from place to place Strong's — it pictures constant movement, not a settled ministry base but a man on the road. And εὐεργετέω (euergetéō, G2109) means literally "to be a benefactor," to do good works for others Strong's — the same root Greeks used for civic patrons who funded public works. Peter is painting Jesus as the ultimate benefactor, moving town to town, spending himself on other people's behalf.

This verse is the Christ connection — it's Peter's summary of who Jesus is, so almost the whole verse points forward into itself. But trace the anointing backward and you find it was promised long before Jesus arrived. Isaiah 61:1 (echoed directly when Jesus reads it aloud in Luke 4:18) says the Spirit of the Lord would rest on God's chosen servant to bring good news, freedom, and healing. Isaiah 42:1 promises the same thing: God's Spirit resting on his Servant to bring justice. Psalm 45:7, quoted again in Hebrews 1:9, pictures a king anointed "above his companions" with the oil of joy. Every one of those threads gets tied off in this single sentence: God anointed this man, in this place, and it happened.

The moment Peter has in mind is almost certainly Jesus' baptism ( Luke 3:22), when the Spirit descended visibly like a dove and a voice from heaven announced, "You are my beloved Son." That's the public commissioning — the moment Jesus stepped out from thirty quiet years and into a ministry marked by exactly what Peter describes here: casting out demons ( Matthew 12:28 ties this directly to the Spirit's power), healing the sick, doing good. And notice the last line — "God was with him." That's not incidental. It's the same phrase Nicodemus uses in John 3:2 to try to figure out who Jesus is, and it echoes God's ancient promise to be with his people. In Jesus, God wasn't just with someone from a distance — he was in him, acting through him, undoing the devil's grip on human lives one healed body at a time. This is the anointing every subsequent believer's own anointing by the Spirit hangs on.

Here's what should stop you cold: the power behind everything Jesus did wasn't self-generated. He didn't grit his teeth and will himself into holiness or miracle-working. He was anointed — given the Spirit, given power, from outside himself. And Peter tells this Roman soldier's household, in effect: this is the same Spirit now available to you.

That should reorder how you think about your own life. If you've been trying to do good, resist evil, or heal what's broken in your relationships purely by force of personality and discipline, you're working with less than what's on offer. The pattern of Jesus' life — anointing first, then action — is meant to be your pattern too.

But don't let the comfort of that erase the cost. Notice Jesus didn't get anointed and then retreat somewhere safe. He went around — town after town, exhausting himself, spending his power on people who mostly didn't deserve it and often didn't thank him. If the Spirit that anointed him is in you, the direction it points is outward, toward other people's need, not just toward your own comfort or spiritual experience.

And take seriously what he was up against: people "oppressed by the devil." That's not a phrase from a horror movie — it's Peter's plain diagnosis of the human condition apart from Christ. Something real holds people down, and it isn't just bad luck or bad choices. If you've been treating spiritual oppression as a metaphor, this verse asks you to reconsider. And it asks something harder: are you willing to go toward the oppressed the way Jesus did, instead of staying comfortably clear of the mess?

• Lord, I confess I often try to do good in my own strength instead of asking for the same Spirit and power you gave Jesus. Teach me to depend on you first.
• Thank you that you were with Jesus in everything he did — help me trust that you are with me too, even when I don't feel it.
• Open my eyes to see people around me who are genuinely oppressed, not just inconvenienced, and give me courage to move toward them instead of away.
• Break whatever hold the enemy has in my own life right now — name it before God specifically.
• Make me someone who "goes around doing good" — not for show, but because your Spirit is actually working in me.

• Where in your life are you relying on willpower instead of asking God for real power?
• Who do you know that you'd describe as "oppressed" in some real way — and when's the last time you moved toward them instead of keeping a safe distance?
• Do you actually believe evil, personal and real, is behind some of the suffering you see — or have you quietly demoted it to metaphor?
• If someone summarized your life in one sentence the way Peter summarizes Jesus' life here, what would it honestly say?
• What would change in your week if you believed God's Spirit was as available and active in you as it was in Jesus?
