Luke 7:50

Picture the scene for a second: Jesus has already said the scandalous thing in verse 48 — "Your sins are forgiven." The whole room has gone stiff. The other guests are muttering, "Who does this guy think he is, forgiving sins?" And into that tension, Jesus turns to the woman one more time, ignores the murmuring men, and speaks directly to her: "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

Notice what he does not say. He doesn't say "your tears have saved you," or "your love has saved you," even though just two verses earlier he pointed to her lavish love — the perfume, the tears, the hair used as a towel — as proof of something real happening in her. Love was the evidence. Faith was the instrument. She loved extravagantly because she'd already grasped, somehow, that this man could forgive her; the trust came first, the flood of love followed Adam Clarke. That order matters enormously — more on that in a minute.

Also worth catching: the word translated "saved" (we'll dig into it below) is the exact same word Luke uses later for the bleeding woman ( Luke 8:48) and for blind Bartimaeus in the parallel accounts ( Mark 10:52). Jesus doesn't file "spiritual forgiveness" and "physical healing" into separate drawers — to him, both are the same act of restoring a broken person to wholeness.

This verse closes out one of the most tender scenes in Luke's Gospel ( Luke 7:36–50), which itself sits inside a run of episodes proving Jesus's authority — healing a centurion's servant, raising a widow's son, defending John the Baptist. Here the "least" person in the room, a woman with a ruined reputation, becomes the one who sees Jesus most clearly, while Simon the religious host sees him least. Christians have long argued over how to read verse 47's "she loved much" — Catholic readings have sometimes leaned toward her love as part of what earns grace; the classic Protestant reading (which this verse seems to confirm) is that forgiveness came first as sheer gift, and love was simply what forgiven people do Matthew Henry.

Luke was a doctor and a traveling companion of the apostle Paul, writing his Gospel sometime in the AD 60s, most likely for a Gentile reader named Theophilus ( Luke 1:3) — probably a Roman official of some rank who needed a careful, orderly account of who this Jesus was and why it mattered.

The scene itself happens at a formal dinner in the home of Simon, a Pharisee — a respected religious leader who has invited Jesus as an honored, if suspect, guest John Gill. In that world, banquets weren't private in our sense; guests reclined on couches around a low table, and it wasn't unusual for townspeople to wander in and watch, even beg leftovers, from the edges of the room. So a woman walking in uninvited wasn't the scandal by itself — the scandal was who she was ("a woman in the city, who was a sinner," almost certainly meaning a prostitute or someone with that reputation) and what she did once inside: she let her hair down in public, something considered so intimate it was nearly indecent, and used it to wipe Jesus's feet, which she'd soaked with her own tears.

There's a quieter insult buried in this scene too. Custom demanded a host provide water for a guest's feet, a kiss of greeting, and oil for the head — basic hospitality. Simon skipped all three for Jesus. A woman with nothing to lose supplied, with her own body and her most expensive possession (the perfume), everything the respectable host withheld. In a culture built on public honor and shame, this dinner was a minefield, and everyone at that table knew exactly what was happening.

The heart of the sentence is πίστις (pistis, G4102) — "faith," but the word carries more than mental agreement; it means trust, reliance, throwing your weight onto something. It's built from a verb meaning "to be persuaded" — so her faith wasn't a feeling, it was a decision to bet everything on Jesus Strong's.

The verb "has saved" is σώζω (sōzō, G4982), the same word used everywhere else in the Gospels for both physical healing and spiritual rescue — the blind man in Luke 18:42, the bleeding woman in Luke 8:48, blind Bartimaeus in Mark 10:52. Greek doesn't split "cured" and "forgiven" the way we might; sōzō means being pulled back from ruin into wholeness, whatever kind of ruin that was Strong's.

Then there's the send-off: πορεύου εἰς εἰρήνην — literally "go into peace." The preposition εἰς (eis, G1519) points toward a destination, not just a mood you carry with you — she's not merely wished well, she's being sent into a new reality Strong's. And εἰρήνη (eirēnē, G1515) is the Greek stand-in for the rich Hebrew shalom — not the absence of conflict but full, right, restored relationship — with God, and by implication, eventually with the community that had already written her off.

The dinner guests asked the right question without meaning to: "Who is this who even forgives sins?" ( Luke 7:49). That question is the whole point. Only God forgives sins — that was settled Jewish theology. So when Jesus says "your faith has saved you," he's not acting as a rabbi commenting on someone's spiritual progress; he's speaking as the one with the authority to actually settle her account with God, on the spot, before he's gone anywhere near a cross.

But notice — he hasn't gone to the cross yet. The peace he hands her here is real, but it's peace given on credit, drawn against a payment he's about to make. Everything this woman receives as a gift in that dining room, Jesus will purchase with his own blood a few chapters later. That's why Paul can later write, almost quoting this exact scene's structure, "since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" ( Romans 5:1). The formula — faith, then peace — isn't Paul's invention. He's just writing down in doctrine what Jesus already lived out at Simon's table.

And this scene is also a living picture of Habakkuk 2:4 — "the righteous will live by faith" — a line Paul leans his whole gospel on in Romans 1:17 and Galatians 3:11. Long before Paul argues it out theologically, this unnamed woman is the argument: not respectable, not "righteous" by anyone's checklist, saved by nothing but trust. She's a preview of what Jesus will do for the whole world — meet people who have nothing to offer but honesty, and give them, free, what money and religious performance could never buy.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: are you Simon, or are you the woman?

Simon did everything right by the rulebook. He invited Jesus in. He kept his hands clean, his reputation intact, his emotions in check. And he walked away from that dinner with nothing, because he never believed he needed anything. The woman walked in with a ruined name and a jar of perfume that probably represented years of shame, and she walked out with peace — actual, settled, into-the-future peace with God.
