Mark 2:17

Look at what just happened right before this: Jesus has called Matthew, a tax collector — a man his neighbors would have despised as a collaborator who skimmed money off his own people for Rome — and then gone to dinner at Matthew's house, surrounded by "tax collectors and sinners" ( Mark 2:15). The religious teachers, the scribes of the Pharisees, watch this and ask his disciples the obvious question: why is he eating with these people? Jesus overhears — the text says "on hearing this" — and answers not with an excuse but with a diagnosis.

His answer is a simple picture: doctors don't make house calls on healthy people. If you're not sick, you don't need a physician; if you are, you do. Then he drops the metaphor and says it plainly: "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Notice he doesn't say there are righteous people who don't need him — the whole rest of Mark, and the rest of the Bible, makes clear nobody's actually healthy in that sense ( Romans 3:23 is a fair cross-reference here). The line is aimed at people who think they're well Tyndale. It's not flattery of sinners and condemnation of the righteous; it's a mirror held up to self-diagnosis. The Pharisees' problem isn't that they're righteous and Jesus prefers sinners — it's that they've convinced themselves they're not sick, and a person who won't admit he's sick will never let the doctor near him.

This sits early in Mark's Gospel, in a string of controversy stories (healing a paralytic, calling Matthew, this dinner, questions about fasting, questions about the Sabbath) where Jesus keeps colliding with the religious establishment over who belongs at the table of God's kingdom Matthew Henry. One textual note worth knowing: some ancient manuscripts add "to repentance" at the end of the verse; most modern translations, including this one, leave it out because the earliest and best manuscripts don't have it Adam Clarke — that doesn't change the meaning much, since the whole point of calling sinners is to turn them, but it's a small honest thing to flag.

Mark's Gospel was likely written somewhere around AD 55–70, probably in Rome, for a mostly non-Jewish audience that needed Aramaic phrases translated and Jewish customs explained — Mark stops to define things a Jewish reader wouldn't need defined. Many early church writers connect it to Peter's preaching, with Mark writing down Peter's eyewitness memories.

This particular scene happens in Capernaum, a fishing town on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee that Jesus used as his home base Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Tax collectors like Matthew worked for Rome (or for local rulers under Rome, like Herod Antipas), buying the right to collect tolls and tariffs, then keeping whatever extra they could squeeze out of their own countrymen. They were despised for a double reason: they served the occupying empire, and they got rich doing it off their neighbors. "Sinners" in this context wasn't a vague moral category — it often meant people who didn't or couldn't keep the purity and food laws the way the religious teachers did: people with disreputable trades, questionable reputations, or just too poor and uneducated to keep every detail of the law's fine print.

The scribes of the Pharisees were the teachers and enforcers of that detailed law-keeping, and table fellowship was serious business in this culture — eating with someone meant identifying with them, sharing their status, even in some sense their ritual condition. So when Jesus reclines at a meal with tax collectors and sinners, he isn't just being friendly; by the social logic of the day, he's declaring solidarity with people the religious establishment had written off. John's disciples were also fasting around this time ( Mark 2:18), which shows there was a broader climate of intense religious devotion — fasting, tithing, ritual care — against which Jesus's meal with outcasts looked scandalous, even reckless.

The key contrast sits in two words. ἰσχύω (ischýō, G2480) means to have strength or be able — it's the word behind "the healthy," literally "those who are strong/well." Against it stands κακῶς ἔχω (kakōs échō) — κακῶς (kakōs, G2560) means "badly," and ἔχω (échō, G2192) means "to hold" or "to be" in some condition — together they mean "to be doing badly," i.e., sick Strong's. So the sentence is built as a straight medical contrast: those who are strong don't have χρεία (chreía, G5532) — "need," "requirement," even "destitution" — of an ἰατρός (iatrós, G2395), a physician. That word χρεία is worth sitting with; it's not "want" but genuine need, the kind you can't manufacture and can't fake your way out of.

Then the verb that carries the weight of the whole gospel: ἔρχομαι (érchomai, G2064), "I have come." Jesus is describing his own mission, his reason for showing up on earth at all — this isn't a passing mood, it's a purpose statement. And the one he "comes" to do is καλέω (kaléō, G2564), "to call" Strong's — the same word used elsewhere for God's summons, his invitation that actually creates the response it asks for. He didn't come to call the δίκαιος (righteous) but the ἁμαρτωλός (sinners) — and the force of the sentence is that this call, this "coming," only makes sense if there's an actual sickness to be healed. The grammar itself refuses to let anyone stand outside the diagnosis.

This verse isn't just something Jesus says — it's Jesus explaining why he exists, in his own words, on his own lips. The whole Bible has been building toward a rescuer who comes not to reward the already-healthy but to go looking for the sick, and here he says it out loud. Luke's version of this same encounter widens the lens: "the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost" ( Luke 19:10). This is the mission statement behind the manger, the cross, the empty tomb — all of it aimed at people who know they need it, not people impressive enough to not need it.

Think about where this puts Jesus in the story of Israel. The prophets had already been saying this for centuries — Isaiah pleads with "the wicked man" to forsake his own way and return, promising that God "will freely pardon" ( Isaiah 55:7), and that sins scarlet as blood can become white as snow ( Isaiah 1:18). Jesus isn't introducing a new idea; he's showing up as the fulfillment of it — the God who pardons freely now has a face, a voice, and dinner guests.

And notice what it costs him to be that physician: doctors who treat contagious disease risk catching it. Jesus doesn't just prescribe from a distance — he sits at Matthew's table, takes on the reputation of "friend of sinners," and eventually takes on something far worse than reputation. Titus 2:14 says he "gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness" — the doctor doesn't just diagnose, he absorbs the disease in his own body on the cross. Luke's next chapter, with its story of the prodigal son and the older brother who resents the party ( Luke 15:29), shows exactly the danger in this verse: the Pharisees' error wasn't wanting to be righteous, it was refusing to admit they were patients too. Jesus came for both sons — but only the one who admits he's sick gets the feast.

Here's the question this verse actually asks you, and it's not comfortable: which one are you pretending to be today — the healthy one, or the sick one who's stopped hiding it?

It's tempting to read this verse and immediately think of someone else — the obvious mess, the addict, the person whose sins are loud and visible — and quietly file yourself under "righteous, doesn't really need the doctor, but glad Jesus is nice to those people." That's the exact posture of the scribes at Matthew's door. They weren't wrong that sin was serious. They were wrong about who had it.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty — real, specific, named-out-loud honesty about what's actually wrong with you, not the sanitized version you'd say in a small group. Not "I struggle sometimes" but the actual thing: the resentment you're nursing, the lie you keep half-telling, the thing you do in private that you'd be ashamed for anyone to see. Jesus isn't waiting for you to clean up before he'll come near you — the doctor doesn't wait in the parking lot for the patient to heal himself first. But he does need you to stop insisting you're fine.

And here's the mercy hiding inside the diagnosis: if you're sick, that means you qualify. You're not too far gone, too repeat-offending, too embarrassing a case for him to bother with. The whole reason he came was for people exactly like you. The only door that's actually shut is the one held closed by someone insisting they don't need to walk through it.

• Thank you that you didn't come for the impressive and put-together, but for people exactly like me — help me actually believe that today, not just recite it.
• Forgive me for the times I've looked down on someone else's obvious mess while excusing my own quieter one.
• Give me the courage to name my sin honestly to you right now, without softening it or explaining it away.
• Where I've resented your mercy toward someone else — like the older brother at the feast — soften my heart and let me see myself clearly.

• If you're honest, do you secretly think you're one of the "healthy" people who doesn't really need this verse? What does that tell you?
• What's the sin you'd be most embarrassed for your small group, or your pastor, or your family to actually know about?
• Who is the "tax collector" in your life right now — the person you've quietly decided is too far gone or too disreputable for Jesus's table? What would it cost you to eat with them?
• When was the last time you actually named a specific sin to God out loud, instead of a general "forgive me for my sins"?
• Does the idea that Jesus came for sinners feel like good news to you, or does some part of you still think you need to get well before you're allowed to come to him?
