Matthew 7:24

Therefore--to bring this discourse to a close. whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them--see Jam 1:22, which seems a plain allusion to these words; also Luk 11:28; Rom 2:13; Jo1 3:7. I will liken him unto a wise man--a shrewd, prudent, provident man. which built his house upon a rock--the rock of true discipleship, or genuine subjection to Christ.

This chapter continues and concludes Christ's sermon on the mount, which is purely practical, directing us to order our conversation aright, both toward God and man; for the design of the Christian religion is to make men good, every way good. We have, I. Some rules concerning censure and reproof (Mat 7:1-6). II. Encouragements given us to pray to God for what we need (Mat 7:7-11). III. The necessity of strictness in conversation urged upon us (Mat 7:12-14). IV. A caution given us to take heed of false prophets (Mat 7:15-20). V. The conclusion of the whole sermon, showing the necessity of universal obedience to Christ's commands, without which we cannot expect to be happy (Mat 7:21-27). VI. The impression which Christ's doctrine made upon his hearers (Mat 7:28, Mat 7:29).

7:24-27 The emphasis in this whole sermon (5:3–7:27) is on doing what Jesus teaches by walking in righteousness (5:20). To hear and not obey is to choose the wide gate and the broad highway that lead to destruction (Jas 1:22-25; 2:14-26). Decision is necessary in light of what has been revealed. See Lev 26; Deut 28, 30. 7:24 A wise . . . person perceives that Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament promises, willingly submits to him, and walks the path that ultimately leads to blessing (5:3-12; 7:13-14). • Building a house directly on rock provides a much stronger foundation than would a dry, sandy riverbed or floodplain (7:26).
