Matthew 6:33

Picture where you are on the page. Jesus has just spent a dozen verses talking you down off the ledge of worry — look at the birds, look at the wildflowers, your Father feeds them, won't he feed you? Then comes verse 33, the hinge the whole thing swings on. He doesn't just say "stop worrying." He gives you something to do instead. Worry is a vacuum; Jesus fills it with a pursuit.

Notice the word "first." This is the whole verse. Jesus isn't ranking your priorities — kingdom at the top, then job, then family, then lunch. He's telling you what your life orbits. Everything else lines up around this one center. As one pastor put it bluntly: every one of us is either seeking God or using God, moment by moment — and "first" is the word that tells you which.

Then watch the easy thing to miss: "and his righteousness." Jesus ties two things together — the kingdom (God's reign, his rule breaking into the world) and righteousness (living the way this King's people actually live, the whole Sermon on the Mount packed into one word). You can't chase the King's reign while shrugging at the King's character.

And the promise — "all these things will be added unto you" — points right back to the food and clothing he just named in verse 32. Here's where Christians have split. The prosperity preacher reads this as a formula for getting stuff: do the spiritual thing, unlock the material blessings. But "first" forbids that. If the stuff is your real aim, you haven't sought the kingdom first at all — you've used God as a vending machine. The promise is real, but it's the byproduct, never the goal. And it's not a guarantee of comfort: some of God's people glorify him by dying in poverty or prison, where the food and clothing are precisely what's missing.

This is Jesus teaching on a hillside in Galilee, somewhere around AD 28–30, to a crowd of ordinary people — fishermen, farmers, day laborers — gathered around a traveling rabbi who taught with a strange authority. Matthew, a former tax collector turned disciple, wrote this Gospel down a few decades later (most scholars say between AD 60 and 85), mainly for Jewish Christians trying to see how Jesus fit the whole story of Israel.

You have to feel how real the worry was for these listeners. There was no savings account, no insurance, no grocery store down the road. The questions "What shall we eat? What shall we drink? What shall we wear?" weren't middle-class fretting — they were the daily math of survival. A bad harvest or a sick ox could mean genuine hunger. When Jesus says "don't worry about food and clothes," he's not talking to people with full pantries. He's talking to people one drought away from disaster.

Layered on top of that was Rome. Galilee was occupied territory — heavily taxed, restless with talk of a coming "kingdom," most people meaning a political revolt that would throw out the Roman soldiers and put a Son of David back on the throne. So when Jesus says "seek first the kingdom of God," he's grabbing a loaded word and redirecting it. The kingdom they wanted was swords, thrones, and dead Romans. The kingdom he preached was God's reign breaking in quietly — in changed hearts, in mercy, in a new way of living — and ultimately in himself. He's prying their deepest hope off of politics and fastening it onto God.

Three words carry the weight here.

ζητέω (zēteō, G2212) — "seek." Not a glance; a search. Picture someone hunting for something they've lost, refusing to quit until they find it. And here's what the English hides: in Greek this is a present-tense command — not "seek once and you're done," but "keep on seeking, go on seeking, never stop." It's the posture of a whole life, not a single decision.

πρῶτον (prōton, G4412) — "first." Not first in a list, but first in rank and importance — the hinge of the verse. It means above everything else, above even the food and clothing your survival depends on.

βασιλεία (basileia, G932) — "kingdom." We hear "kingdom" and picture a place — borders, a flag. But the word leans harder toward reign: the active ruling of a king. So "seek first God's kingdom" means seek to live under God's actual rule — let him be King over your heart, your money, your worry, right now.

And δικαιοσύνη (dikaiosynē, G1343) — "righteousness." Both the right standing God gives you and the right living he grows in you. You can't pull those apart. You seek the gift and the life it produces, together.

Here's the quiet bombshell underneath this verse: Jesus says "seek first the kingdom" — and he is the King. The reign he tells you to chase is his own reign. When he says "seek God's rule above all," he is drawing your whole heart toward himself.

Then there's that word "righteousness." Jesus tells you to seek it, and back in Matthew 5:6 he promised that those who hunger and thirst for it "shall be filled." But the Sermon on the Mount also sets the bar at a terrifying height — "be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect" ( Matthew 5:48). So how do you seek a righteousness you could never produce on your own?

This is where the gospel breaks in. Paul says God "made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" ( 2 Corinthians 5:21). The righteousness Jesus tells you to seek, Jesus becomes for you. He lived the spotless life you can't live, died the death your sin earned, and now hands you his record as a gift. So "seek first his righteousness" isn't a treadmill of trying harder — at its root it's coming back, again and again, to the One who is your righteousness.

And notice the tenderness in the promise. The same Jesus who tells you to seek first is the One who, on the cross, sought you first while you weren't seeking him at all ( Romans 5:8). The command rests on a love that moved before you did. You can hunt for the kingdom with your whole life precisely because the King already came hunting for you.

Let me ask you the hard question this verse asks. Not "do you believe in God?" — but are you seeking him, or using him? Because everyone in the room does one or the other. The person who prays for a job is doing the same outward thing whether God is the goal or God is the tool. The difference is invisible to your neighbor and obvious to God. "First" is the word that exposes which one you are.

Here's the cost. Jesus is asking you to dethrone the thing you actually reach for first when you wake up afraid. For most of us that's not idolatry of statues — it's the bank balance, the medical test, the kid who isn't calling back, the reputation. Worry is the proof of what sits on your throne. You don't worry about what you've genuinely handed to God; you worry about what you're still trying to control. So Jesus says: take that very anxiety — that restless energy that keeps you up at night — and redirect it. Be that hungry, that relentless, that single-minded about his kingdom instead.

And don't miss the beautiful collapse that follows. When God truly comes first, the line between sacred and ordinary dissolves. Your kitchen becomes a temple. Your job becomes worship. A meal becomes a small sacrament of gratitude. Monday stops being the wasteland between Sundays. The person who seeks first has no secular life left to speak of — it's all holy ground.

So name it today. What are you seeking first, really — not in theory, in your gut, this morning? Confess it. Then take one concrete thing you've been clutching and put it second, on purpose, where it belongs. That's the whole turn this verse asks of you.

• Father, show me honestly what I seek first — and where I've been using you instead of seeking you.
• Take the energy I pour into worry and redirect it; make me restless and relentless for your kingdom instead.
• Thank you that Jesus became my righteousness, so that I seek you as a son coming home, not a slave earning wages.
• Help me trust you with the very thing I'm clutching today, and set it second where it belongs.
• Make my ordinary day holy ground — my work, my meals, my home — all of it lived under your rule.

• What is the first thing my mind reaches for when I'm afraid? That is probably what I'm actually seeking first.
• Where in my life am I doing the outward religious thing while inwardly using God to get something else?
• If "all these things" were taken from me — comfort, security, even health — would I still want the kingdom? Or do I mostly want the things?
• What is one concrete thing I'm clutching right now that I need to deliberately move to second place this week?
• Has my faith become a treadmill of trying harder, when Jesus is offering to be my righteousness as a gift? What would change if I believed that?
