Matthew 23:1

On the surface this is just a stage direction — a narrator's note that Jesus opened his mouth to speak. But look at who he's talking to. Two audiences, side by side: the crowds and the disciples Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. That word "then" (tóte) is doing quiet work — it ties this moment to everything that just happened. Right before this, in Matthew 21 and 22, the religious leaders had been trying to trap Jesus with trick questions and had come up empty every time Tyndale. They came hunting for a reason to accuse him publicly. And now, having survived every ambush, Jesus turns and addresses the public himself.

What's easy to miss is that this single verse is the doorway into one of the most blistering speeches in all four Gospels. What follows is chapter after chapter of "woe to you" aimed at the scribes and Pharisees — the religious professionals of the day. So verse 1 isn't small talk. It's Jesus squaring his shoulders before the confrontation of his life, days before the cross.

Notice the double audience is deliberate. He speaks to the disciples — his inner circle, the ones being trained — but he lets the crowds overhear. The warning is meant to instruct the followers and protect the bystanders at the same time. Luke tells a similar scene where Jesus, pressed by "many thousands" trampling one another, first warns his disciples about "the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy" ( Luke 12:1). Same concern, same setup: teach the few, shield the many. There's no real disagreement among Christians about this verse — it's a hinge, and the weight is in what comes after.

Picture the last week of Jesus' life, somewhere around AD 30, in the crowded, tense courts of the Jerusalem temple during Passover week — the biggest festival of the year, when the city swelled with pilgrims and Roman soldiers watched nervously from the fortress overlooking the temple.

Matthew is writing his Gospel a few decades later, probably somewhere between AD 60 and 80, largely for Jewish followers of Jesus who knew the world of scribes and Pharisees from the inside. So who were these men Jesus is about to denounce? The scribes were the professional Bible scholars — the ones who copied, taught, and interpreted the Law of Moses. The Pharisees were a devout renewal movement, deeply serious about obeying every detail of God's Law and the traditions built up around it. These weren't villains in cartoon costumes. In the eyes of ordinary people, they were the good guys — the ones who took God seriously when everyone else was slack.

That's what makes this moment so charged. The tension has been building for days. Jesus had ridden into the city to shouts of "Hosanna," flipped the tables of the money changers, and then stood in the temple courts absorbing wave after wave of hostile questions from the religious establishment ( Matthew 21–22). Each time, he turned their traps back on them. Now the leaders are silent, and Jesus takes the floor.

The setting matters: he's not off in a private room. He's in public, in the temple, with both the crowds and his students in earshot. His days revolved around his disciples — he received the crowds, healed them, taught them, but he poured his life into the twelve desiringgod.org. Here he does both at once, on the largest stage available, right before everything breaks.

The verse opens with τότε (tóte, G5119), "then" — literally "at the time that" Strong's. It's a small hinge word, but Matthew loves it; he uses it to snap one scene shut and open the next. It signals: because of everything that just happened, now this.

The verb is λαλέω (laléō, G2980), "to talk, to utter words" Strong's. It's a plain word for opening your mouth and speaking out loud — nothing fancy, nothing hushed. Jesus is going public.

Then two words for his audience. ὄχλος (óchlos, G3793) is "a throng" — a crowd being carried along, sometimes even meaning "the rabble" or a riot Strong's. It's the pressing, jostling, unfiltered public. And μαθητής (mathētḗs, G3101) is "a learner, a pupil" — it comes from the verb "to learn" Strong's. That's what a disciple actually is: not a fan, not a member, but a student who has apprenticed himself to a teacher.

Set those two words side by side and you see Jesus' whole method in miniature. There's the óchlos — the loose, curious crowd — and the mathētēs — the committed few who've signed up to learn. Jesus speaks to both at once, teaching the students while the crowd overhears. And the name at the center, Ἰησοῦς (Iēsoûs, G2424), is simply the Greek form of the Hebrew Yeshua — "the LORD saves" Strong's. The one about to expose false shepherds is himself the Savior his name announces.

Watch where this verse sits in the story. For chapters, the religious leaders have been the ones asking questions, setting traps, standing in judgment over Jesus. Now the roles flip. The one they've been examining stands up to examine them. This is the true Teacher taking the seat that the false teachers thought was theirs.

There's an old thread running through the Old Testament: God's anger at shepherds who fatten themselves while the sheep starve. Listen to Ezekiel 34:2 — "Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only feed themselves! Should not shepherds feed the flock?" That's exactly the indictment Jesus is about to deliver. And in the very next breath in Ezekiel, God says, "I Myself will search for My sheep" ( Ezekiel 34:11). Jesus standing up in the temple to expose the bad shepherds is God searching for his sheep in person. He's not just criticizing the shepherds — he's replacing them. "I am the good shepherd," he says elsewhere. "The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep" ( John 10:11).

That's the deeper connection. Jesus speaks to the crowds and disciples not as one critic among many, but as the Word of God made flesh — the true Prophet who tells the truth no one else dares to, and the Savior whose very name means rescue Strong's. Within days, the men he's confronting will hand him over to be killed. So this speech is the good shepherd walking straight toward the wolves for the sake of the flock. His public denunciation of hollow religion protects the very crowds pressing in on him — a rescue that will cost him everything at the cross a few days later.

Here's the uncomfortable part. When you read that Jesus is about to unload on the scribes and Pharisees, your instinct is to lean back and enjoy it — good, get 'em. But remember who these men were. They were the devout ones. The ones who read Scripture daily, who tithed, who prayed in public, who took God more seriously than their neighbors. If Jesus' harshest words land on the most religious people in the room, then the safest place for you to stand is not on the sidelines nodding along. It's kneeling, asking whether any of this describes you.

Notice, too, how Jesus taught: to the crowd and to the disciples at once, but pouring himself into the disciples — the learners Strong's. He didn't chase popularity. He received the crowds but built his life around the few who actually wanted to be changed desiringgod.org. Which are you? A face in the óchlos, drifting in and out, entertained by Jesus but never apprenticed to him? Or a mathētēs — a student who's handed over the right to run your own life?

The cost this verse asks is simple and steep: stop being a spectator of Jesus. It's possible to admire him, quote him, even defend him online, and never once let him teach you something that reorders your life. The crowds heard this whole speech and still went home unchanged. The disciples heard it and were being formed into men who would die for him.

So don't just overhear Jesus today. Sit down at his feet as a student — and let him say the hard thing you'd rather not hear.

• Lord Jesus, You are the true Teacher — teach me today, and give me the humility to be a learner and not just a spectator of You.
• Search me the way You searched Your people. Show me where I've settled for looking religious instead of belonging to You.
• Thank You for being the good shepherd who told the truth and walked toward the cross for the sake of the flock — for me.
• Keep me from the leaven of hypocrisy. Make my private life match my public words.
• Move me from the edge of the crowd to a place at Your feet, ready to obey whatever You say.

• If Jesus' sharpest words fell on the most devout, religious people of his day — what makes me so sure they wouldn't fall on me?
• Am I a face in the crowd around Jesus, or a student who has actually handed him the right to change my life? What's the evidence?
• Where does my public reputation for faith run ahead of what's actually true when no one is watching?
• Jesus received the crowds but built his life around the few. What am I building my days around — and does it show what I really treasure?
• What is the hard thing I suspect Jesus wants to say to me that I've been avoiding by staying entertained instead of taught?
