Matthew 22:38

Look at what Jesus actually does here. A lawyer has just tried to trap him with a question that Jewish teachers loved to argue about: out of the 613 commands in the Law, which one is the big one? Jesus doesn't hedge. He reaches back into Deuteronomy 6:5 — "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" — and then in verse 38 he stamps it: "This is the first and greatest commandment."

Notice the two words he uses: first and greatest. "First" isn't just first in a list, like item number one on a grocery run. It means foremost — the one everything else hangs on Strong's. It's the source, the headwater. Everything else in the Law flows downhill from this.

Here's what's easy to miss. Jesus was asked for one command, and in the next breath (verse 39) he gives two — love God, then love your neighbor. He refuses to let you hold them apart. But he's crystal clear about the order: loving God comes first, and it's not a tie. Love of neighbor is real, but it's the overflow. Get the order wrong and both collapse.

Where this sits in the story: Matthew has stacked up a series of hostile questions from religious leaders trying to discredit Jesus. This is the one moment where the question is almost sincere, and Jesus answers by handing back the beating heart of the entire Old Testament. He's not adding a rule. He's telling you what all the rules were always for.

Christians don't much divide over the meaning here — it's one of the rare verses everyone reads the same way. The real argument is never about what it means. It's about whether any of us has ever actually done it.

Picture the last week of Jesus' life, somewhere around AD 30, inside the temple courts in Jerusalem — crowded, tense, packed with pilgrims for Passover. Matthew, writing his Gospel a few decades later (most likely somewhere between AD 60 and 80) for a largely Jewish-Christian audience, is showing you a series of ambushes. The Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Herodians — rival groups who normally couldn't stand each other — take turns lobbing loaded questions at Jesus, hoping he'll say something they can use to arrest or embarrass him.

The question about the "greatest commandment" wasn't random. Jewish teachers really did count the commands of the Law — the traditional tally was 613 — and they genuinely debated how to rank them, which were "heavy" and which were "light." Asking which one towered over the rest was a real scholarly parlor game. It could also be a trap: name one command as greatest and you seem to demote the others.

Every faithful Jew in earshot would have recognized instantly what Jesus quoted. "Love the LORD your God with all your heart..." is the second line of the Shema (from the Hebrew word for "Hear," Deuteronomy 6:4–5), the confession devout Jews recited every morning and evening, taught to their children, bound to their arms and doorposts. It was the closest thing Israel had to a national heartbeat.

So when Jesus answers, he isn't inventing anything or picking a side in an academic fight. He's reaching for the words already on everyone's lips — the words they'd said that very morning — and saying: this, right here, is the one you already knew was greatest. The trap snaps shut on the trapper. Nobody can argue with the Shema.

Two little Greek words do the heavy lifting in this verse.

The first is πρῶτος (prōtos, G4413), which we translate "first." It doesn't only mean first in a sequence — it means foremost, first in importance and rank Strong's. Think of it less like the front car of a train and more like the foundation stone the whole building rests on. When Jesus calls this command prōtos, he's not filing it at the top of a to-do list; he's saying everything else stands or falls on it.

The second is μέγας (mégas, G3173), "great" — a wide, sweeping word for anything big, whether in size or weight or significance Strong's. Pairing prōtos and mégas is deliberate doubling: not just first and biggest, but the command that is both the source and the summit.

Then there's ἐντολή (entolḗ, G1785), the word for commandment — an "authoritative prescription," a binding order handed down Strong's. This is worth sitting with. Jesus doesn't call love a feeling, a mood, a spark you either have or don't. He calls it an entolē — a command. You can command love only if love is finally something you do and choose, not just something that happens to you. That's a hard, freeing truth: God can order you to love him because love, at bottom, is direction and devotion of the whole self — not weather that blows through your chest.

Here's the ache at the center of this verse: Jesus names the one command that matters most, and the moment you take it seriously, you realize you've never once kept it. Not for a single day. Not for an hour. Your heart, your soul, your mind — all of you, aimed entirely at God, with nothing held back? That command isn't a gentle nudge. It's a mirror, and it shows you a face you don't want to see.

And that's exactly where Jesus becomes more than a teacher quoting Deuteronomy. He is the only human being who ever actually did this — who loved the Father with the whole of himself, all the way to a cross, without one flicker of divided loyalty. Where you and I have failed the first and greatest commandment every day we've drawn breath, he kept it perfectly, and then handed that perfect record over to people who hadn't earned it.

Look at what's happening in Matthew 22 itself. The leaders are circling, hunting for a way to kill him. Within days they'll succeed. And the man they nail up is the one man who fully loved God with heart, soul, and mind — dying for the crowd of us who never did. That's the trade at the heart of the gospel.

So this verse drives you straight to him twice over. First, because it exposes your need — you cannot love your way to God on your own steam. Second, because on the night before he died Jesus gave what he called a "new commandment" ( John 13:34): love one another as I have loved you. He doesn't just command the love; he pours it in, so that the love you owe God starts flowing out of the love he first poured over you.

Let this one land honestly. Jesus just told you the single most important thing you were ever made to do — love God with everything you are — and if you're paying attention, it should knock the wind out of you a little. Because you haven't. Your heart's been split a hundred ways this week alone: your phone, your worries, your reputation, your comfort, your grudges. God has rarely been the love of your life. Most days he's been one item on the list.

Here's the sharp edge of it: when God isn't the supreme love of your heart, you don't become a person who loves nothing supremely. You just quietly install yourself in his place. The throne never stays empty. If he's not on it, you are. And a self on the throne is a miserable, anxious little god to serve.

So the cost this verse asks of you is your center. Not a slice of your Sunday, not a tithe of your attention — the actual command post of your life, the thing everything else orbits. That's harder than any specific sin you could name, because it's not about behavior first, it's about affection. You can't white-knuckle your way into loving God. Willpower won't manufacture a passion.

But you can do this: you can come to him honest and empty. You can say, I don't love you like this and I can't work it up. And then you can look hard at what he's actually done for you — the cross, the forgiveness, the sheer generosity of it — until wonder starts to warm the cold. Love for God isn't squeezed out of you by effort. It's kindled by seeing, again and again, how great a sinner you are and how great a Savior he is. Go look at him. Let the loving follow the looking.

• Father, I confess I have never loved you with all my heart, soul, and mind — forgive me for the throne I keep giving to myself, and take your rightful place at the center of me.
• Lord Jesus, thank you that you loved the Father perfectly in my place, and that your obedience covers my failure — help me rest in that before I try to do anything.
• Holy Spirit, kindle in me a real love for God, not a performance — warm the cold parts of my heart until I actually want him more than I want comfort or approval.
• Show me today the specific things I love supremely instead of you, and give me the courage to name them and let them go.
• Teach me that love is something I do, not just something I feel — let me obey you even on the days the feeling isn't there, trusting the affection will follow.

• If a stranger watched your last seven days with no sound, what would they guess is the great love of your life? Be honest — not what you'd want them to guess.
• When God isn't on the throne of your heart, what usually takes his place? Name it specifically.
• Do you treat love for God as a feeling you wait to arrive, or as a command you can obey now? How would this week look different if you believed the second?
• Where have you been trying to love your neighbor without first loving God — and where has that left you exhausted, resentful, or empty?
• What would it cost you, concretely, to move God from one item on your list to the center everything else orbits? Are you willing to pay it?
